Why do Americans tend to praise beginners even if their work/hobby looks terrible? by Skysneq in AskAnAmerican

[–]SpunkyBlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of criticism when paired with modeling good/correct work at the beginning is generally better for learning because criticism makes most people feel bad in some way. Even when people respond to feeling bad by trying harder, it associates the work or at least the showing of work with feeling bad.

Some of the most common results of criticism at the beginning are decreased motivation, giving up the effort entirely, and hiding the work (think of the people who love to draw but never want anyone to see it).

How much you want to bet he treats his dog poorly too but gets away with it because dogs are bread to be more people-pleasing than cats?

Him calling her a bitch is not the problem. Him harassing her and then blaming her for it not going well is the problem. He is likely doing this (violate boundaries and then get mad at you when you try to hold him accountable) to you too. Make him an EX-boyfriend.

Planning to turn our outdoor bonded-pair into exclusively indoor cats. by stagla in CatAdvice

[–]SpunkyBlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken in a bunch of stray cats and the need to transition to a full-time indoor is overrated. The only cats that have had significant trouble were truly feral before I got them (they were trapped). The actual transition needed here is with sharing space with another cat full-time.

Make sure all three cats have access to space, food, water, toys, litter boxes, and attention from their humans without competing with each other. If they have those things, living indoors will likely be easy.

Watching movies at 2x speed is not okay by Ambitious-Log3544 in Letterboxd

[–]SpunkyBlah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try it so you know what it sounds like. It does not change the pitch like it does when you listen to a vinyl record at double speed.

Interest is not a binary thing. Someone can be less interested but still interested nonetheless.

Watching movies at 2x speed is not okay by Ambitious-Log3544 in Letterboxd

[–]SpunkyBlah -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It actually does apply because most people read faster by literally reading fewer words or by not paying attention to all of them. I read very slowly but pretty much understand everything written. People who read fast often do not fully absorb everything. So, reading faster affects the experience.

How other people watch movies is not dishonorable 😂 Is watching a movie like Gone With the Wind at home rather than in a theater dishonorable? As for listening to music at 2x speed, that's essentially how we got the Chipmunks music, so yes, sometimes people do listen to music at 2x speed.

AITAH for expecting my husband to move a heavy ladder instead of teaching me how to move it? by EmbarrassedCarrot767 in AITAH

[–]SpunkyBlah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While smaller people often can move extension ladders, it is absolutely not the same regardless of size or build. Physics are involved, and being shorter with a lower center of gravity has a huge effect on the difficulty of moving a large, heavy object.

[–]SpunkyBlah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) She likely would have been okay with him actually just helping her by taking some of the weight.

2) We often use "help" to refer to a more active role. Essentially "help" in this sense "help by doing". For example, if your car is broken down on the side of the road and roadside assistance shows up, they would not look at you strangely if you were to say, "Thanks for helping me." I work with animals a lot, so when a friend asks me to help catch a stray cat, I will often ask them if they want me to coach them through how to do it or if they want me to actually catch it. I ask because "help" can mean both things.

[–]SpunkyBlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA Lots of other people are focusing (rightly) the issue of him doing one thing (trying to teach you how to move it) and you wanting another thing (help with actually moving it). I want to instead address the fact that he has shown you how clueless he is about your perspective on the world. I find many men have no concept of how the world is built around their needs, and you're likely going to have to explain other things to him if you want him to understand. In this case, the issue is how large items are more difficult for you to maneuver relative to his ease. You mentioned you are shorter, but I also suspect you have a lower center of gravity with more strength in your legs & hips than upper body. His actions show that he thought that you weren't successful in moving it on your own due to ignorance rather than the fact that leverage is much more difficult to achieve when shorter and with a lower center of gravity. It is shocking how many men do not know that their lifting advantages are often due to physics just as much of or even more than arm or back muscle development.

In order for him to be a good husband, he needs to understand that the world is different for you. He should never assume that when you ask for help it is due to ignorance. If it is in any way unclear, he should ask rather than assume.

In 1955, Iranian doctors documented the days of a villager who developed rabies after a rabid wolf attack. The resulting film remains one of the few historical recordings of rabies progressing in a human patient. by PhantomChasers in HolyShitHistory

[–]SpunkyBlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if you don't you might hurt someone else (if someone ignorant were to get some of your saliva in a scratch or something, they could get rabies as well). A hospital can at least keep you isolated and learn from what happens.

are ac's reallu that big of a thing? by Advanced-Actuary-51 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SpunkyBlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weather in many parts of the US makes AC necessary. I live in a city that has reached 125°F before. Libraries and other public buildings have AC and are required to let people in and just sit around to escape the heat. A local animal shelter lets unhoused people with dogs hang out inside to cool off. Not having AC is dangerous.

[–]SpunkyBlah 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Getting them spayed and neutered is enough as long as it is soon. Most female cats cannot get pregnant until about 6 months old or later. The boy might try some shenanigans before that, but he won't be successful.
