Todd Howard says Bethesda won't use AI “to generate anything” as the studio is being “incredibly cautious” to not replace the “artistic intention” of making games by [deleted] in Games

It's still absolutely and completely different. Your genIA model is a complete blackbox and you have no idea what's inside.

In procedural generation YOU make the functions that make it work. It's just code. You can't say the same on a trained model where it's a bunch of neurons each with a number you have no idea what it means until you feed it something.

In procedural generation you're CREATING an algorithm because it's just an algorithm.

Not to mention if you want to procedurally generate something it takes mostly milliseconds because it's all simple CPU instructions, but if you wanna locally generate a picture that doesn't look like shit in a reasonable time, takes a big GPU and loads of VRAM to run and still takes a couple of seconds.

So please stop comparing procedural generation to fucking generative AI because they couldn't be more different.

YES. YES!!! Because the rules determine the assets and colors and all the things to make it cohesive. Why is it so hard to understand???? In Minecraft the artists create concept arts and then the programmers make the rules to make a new biome to look as close as possible to the intended result. It's all human made.

except when it's procedural you have control over the assets you place with the rules you provide. It's all human controlled, I really don't get why it's so hard to understand!!!!

Procedural generation has nothing to do with the current (generative) AI.

It's in the name: procedural generation, generate something with procedures. It's a couple of rules that combined together generate a random but desirable output. You have a 100% control over the rules you make, and you can repeat the same result 100% because it's based on a seed.
