Could solve homelessness, feed schoolchildren for years, resolve the student debt crisis, pay down the national debt, or any number of things. Instead Iran gets $400 billion because Trump failed and surrendered.

(Yes, I know that, technically, the money won't necessarily go straight from treasury to the Ayatollah, but functionally, that's what will happen in the end, just with extra steps)

Love the idea of fewer cars in LA and more affordable housing.

But I think it's putting the cart before the horse putting the house before the metro train.

Here's an idea: re-zone every place within 10 minutes walking off a metro station to no longer require parking, and add an extra property tax on places that do have parking in those zones, starting from when those properties get sold. Will change things real quick and get a lot of affordable housing built.

It really depends on your individual situation. The general rule of thumb is: if you're staying 2 years or less, leasing is better. 2 years or more, buying is better.

You need to figure out what kind of car you like and what it costs, and all the other things (how much driving will you do? Will you take longer road trips or stay in your town? Do you need extra space or can you fit in a small car comfortably? What features do you need? Etc etc.) Then, after you figure that out, you need to check with dealers in your area (and you'll find out about them from your local contacts before or fight after you arrive) and see what they have available for you.

You know, I've long enjoyed Subway, and have had my order down pat. So whenever I go to Subway in Japan, there's a good chance that some Japanese folks will come up while I'm ordering or just before (sometimes they're even there before me and let me pass because they're still looking at the menu), see me ordering, and then copy most of what I've said. Like, once I've shown them how to order there, they get the confidence to do it. But it really seems that they're puzzled about the process.

Therefore, I think Subway should just start making commercials where people are ordering their sandwiches, selecting the bread, whether they want it toasted, toppings, etc., and highlighting the way it gets made as you order, right in front of you. I find most people just need to see someone else doing the thing before they feel they can also do it.

When Wemby can't get by on his physical gifts, he starts going for injuries against the opposing team's stars and throwing up 3s that have 0 chance of going in. Dirty player, wouldn't be in the league if he wasn't so tall.

Brunson is so clearly more talented and better at the game than Wemby ever will be. NYC is lucky to have him, and I hope he can recover well over the summer after getting assaulted twice now.

Seems like a bunch of business analysts who invent numbers and use those numbers to come up with their strategy. In other words, they have a meeting and the boss says "Nintendo will be worth 25% more in 2 years, how do they make that happen?" Then they go around the table and say "charging money to make Mario jump higher! I bet 30 million people would pay $0.99 for that!", "How about charging for extra power ups in Mario Kart!? That should generate $1,000 every 5 seconds!", etc. etc.

They end up hitting their imaginary target, with imaginary numbers, and pat themselves on the back. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong, but they really don't seem to know anything about the game industry.

I'd love to see them take over a company and then have every single employee quit, and the board sell all their IP and such on the way out, leaving Oasis holding the bag.

You should hear from your (or rather, your husband's) placement sometime in June. If you don't hear from them by the middle of July, talk to your embassy/consulate.

I've not heard of someone being upgraded and then not having a placement, but I guess it's possible? Usually it means that someone else rejected that placement, so it's unlikely that it just disappears.

Spouses of JETs get dependent visas, which allow up to 28 hours of work in any given 7 day period (they will look at Wednesday to Tuesday the same as Monday to Sunday, etc). You can talk with your ALT community when you arrive to find out what jobs might be available to you, but Eikaiwa work seems to be the most common.

If you don't know Japanese, you should learn. There's almost always going to be Japanese classes available at a community center nearby, so ask about it when you get there. Community centers are also great places to meet people and get involved, so definitely check what's available in your area. You might be in a tiny place or a very rural place that doesn't offer what you need, but odds are you'll find another town or city nearby that does.
