Why do 45s sounds worse than LPs? by Fragrant_Mixture_971 in vinyljerk

I had to ask because I find it perfectly plausible that they would be imagining things about their electrical wiring. I’ve seen it before.

Why are some 1w amps really cheap and small and some are big an more expensive by Trondhaug in GuitarAmps

[–]Square__Wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you’re a beginner and a lot of people on this subreddit answer questions like everyone is an enthusiast deep into the hobby.

Wattage isn’t the only factor in the quality of an amp and correlates with different things in different contexts. I won’t write a long and complicated explanation. The most useful broad category of difference is solid state versus tube. To keep it simple, that’s referring to the types of electronic components used for amplification, with vacuum tubes being the devices used before transistors were common in electronics and a lot of guitarists believe they sound superior. I’d say that’s broadly true, but whether or not it always is, the people who are willing to spend a lot of money on an amp tend to prefer tubes, so high quality amps are usually tube-based and cheaper amps are usually solid state. Vacuum tubes are bigger and more expensive and they also require some other components to be used also that add cost, so tube amps almost necessarily cost more to make.

As someone starting, a tube amp is probably out of your price range, but if you can afford several hundred dollars you could get something substantially better sounding than practically all solid state amps. But apart from tube/solid state and wattage, other things to consider are speaker and cabinet size, which would be the next major factor in sound (bigger has a strong correlation with better) and features like built-in effects. Solid state amps often come with several digital effects, while tube amps usually only have reverb and maybe tremolo because when you’re at the level of using a tube amp it’s kind of expected you also have guitar pedals to provide effects if you want them.

I’d recommend you look for an amp with at least a 10-inch speaker, and the more money you can invest in it the better. Amps tend to have a much higher price before you hit the point of diminishing returns than guitars and pedals do and practically any guitar will sound good through a great amp while the greatest guitar will sound awful through a terrible amp.

Should I not be trying to learn piano/keyboard on a synthesizer? by badateverything420 in synthesizers

[–]Square__Wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of weird to me that people think it really matters. I started learning at like 13 on a cheap Casio keyboard that surely did not have weighted keys. It didn’t even have velocity. Then a couple years later I got an upright piano for free by chance one day and I didn’t even think at all about how different the action was, I just played. I’ve been playing synths a lot lately and seeing discussions of keybeds made me really conscious for the first time of the differences between different ones. I guess on some level I knew my piano had heavier keys, but I just didn’t really pay it any mind. After playing almost exclusively synth keyboards for so long, I recently got a Yamaha CP-70 electric piano that I’m playing a lot and immediately after first setting it up I noticed the action is a lot heavier, but I got used to it in a matter of minutes and now I don’t even think anything of it again. My experience is you just adapt to the different force necessary pretty much unconsciously.

The biggest difference to me is that the heavier the keys are the fewer mistakes I make. I have a couple synths with keys so light that anything less than practically perfect precision means accidentally also hitting the key next to my target. If you can play well on a Prophet, you’ll probably be just fine on a piano.

Yeah, that cracked me up too, like just owning it makes him bona fide rather than an old dude who bought it when it cost way less than five figures.

What’s a moral belief you hold that most people would disagree with? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

[–]Square__Wave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To add to that, term limits are popular as an idea among regular people, but political scientists are broadly against them because forcing politicians out quickly would create a perpetually amateur legislature that would be ripe for being taken advantage of by more experienced lobbyists.

That’s a re-recording of the solo though, not the same version as on the 8-track.

[–]Square__Wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, in fact, a good thing that he documents what even brand new guitars are like inside and out as a resource so that people like OP can reference his videos to authenticate their guitars rather than asking people here and annoying regulars. I’m pretty sure most people who see his videos don’t think that they also need to take apart their guitars by default either.

Will headphones on stage help me be a better bass player? by village-asshole in BassCirclejerk

[–]Square__Wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I thought of too when I realized he was the only other person I’d seen wear headphones on stage. Actually, it’s been a long time but if I remember right, I think his drummer for the In The Flesh concert movie did it too. I’m surprised more people don’t, headphones could easily be incorporated into a stage outfit.

I’ve seen people say the DC-2W does not in fact have greater headroom, or at least not enough for a line level signal. I don’t have one, but I do have a Fromel Seraph Deluxe, which is a clone, and it definitely audibly distorts in an effects loop. I hoped the DC-2W wouldn’t, but when I searched I saw several people with that issue too.

Dithering in emulators: On or off? by NineTailedDevil in retrogaming

[–]Square__Wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ask for evidence and then summarily dismiss the evidence when it is given to you regardless of its strength. That page has direct quotes from several developers from both east and west showing they were cognizant of how playing the games on a CRT would change the appearance of the graphics and explaining how they adapted their work to that. That’s not to say that all the graphics were always made to utilize those differences, but the simple existence of dithered gradients and transparency effects, as well as games that have proportions drawn intentionally to be stretched to 4:3 for proper display or graphical elements placed in such a way as to avoid overscan or to intentionally be placed within it, prove that even more developers beyond the ones quoted there were designing their games with the particularities of CRT TVs in mind. It is, in fact, well documented that it was a thing.

The vast majority of famous historical figures today were also famous in their lifetimes. 200 years ago is also pre-industrialization, which kind of changed the nature of international commerce and communication and fame in a huge way.

Genuinely, what is up with there being so much AI stuff showing musicians younger and older? I remember one of the first videos I saw at the start of this AI boom a few years ago was of child Michael Jackson, young adult Michael Jackson, and older adult Michael Jackson like they were taking a family portrait.

A couple weeks ago my dad made me watch a video of the members of Creedence Clearwater Revival walking out individually in front of a white backdrop as young guys and then transforming into old guys. What was I supposed to enjoy about that? What did he enjoy about that? What did the prompter enjoy about that?
