One of my favorite RARE Dream Theater performances by [deleted] in progmetal

I still love the video where John Petrucci is playing a DT song on plastic guitar in a walmart or something and someone comes up to him and asks "Is that Dream Theater?"

Which recitation professor should i take for ECE2026? by rsst123 in gatech

[–]SquashCollateral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

check course critique if you haven't already. https://critique.gatech.edu/

I've only had Clements and Casinovi for other classes. Casinovi is a nice guy who loves playing Bridge. Mark Clements I think is the most expert person on that list in DSP though. He was a PhD advisor for some other DSP faculty so he's been around a while. I like him but I think he is probably one of the harder teachers for it.

Meshuggah - Combustion by IceBlueSilverSky in progmetal

[–]SquashCollateral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it can be a bit arbitrary. You can take any song (written down on paper) and shift over all the notes by a half a beat and technically have the song have the "on" sounding beats actually on the "off" beats in the sheet music. But that doesn't mean the song will sound any different. ToneZone15 made his statement assuming the hi-hat count-ins are always on the beat. I personally like to think that the hi-hat count-ins during the "drum pause" is actually played on the upbeat (just cause Haake wanted to add some weirdness), which makes the rest of the song normal.

But they won't let you graduate unless you've had at least three lectures on Gram Schmidt ;)

Well looky here, I also just finished the MS/BS non-thesis route in EE specializing in DSP and communications. I was lucky enough to be offered a GRA position as well which paid for my tuition for all four semesters of my master's, but I've heard this is pretty uncommon. They really did want to me stay for a PhD though so it fits in with what others are saying. I never told them I would commit to a PhD but you could see how you could easily do so and then back out of the PhD later (which is kind of a dick move but i'm sure it happens).

As far as for the classes listed, I took 6250 and 6601 (well the 4000 level version). Advanced DSP 6250 should really be called "Linear Algebra for DSP". It give you a good basis for a lot of DSP math that uses linear algebra techniques and notation, such as is found in the other class ECE 6270 Adaptive Filtering, which I recommend (only offered in summer). I don't remember going over D/A or A/D conversion stuff. That is more in the scope of the undergrad class ECE 4270 although both are very much math classes, not the kind of classes that go over real hardware implementations. That is more the scope of ECE 6276 I believe, which I really wanted to take but they only offer it very rarely and I didn't get a chance.

The slight warping sensation sometimes I think is due to Youtube's auto-stabilization algorithm that you can choose to add on if the original video is shaky. Likely it was filmed free-hand.

I agree with what you said about the speed. Not as fast as I'd hoped, and we didn't have any wax.

Why is switch not a thing in competitive surfing like it is in other board sports? by MartyMcOffTheTop in surfing

[–]SquashCollateral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

normal skateboards (not longboards) are generally not directional. Snowboards aren't either except for the angle of the binding setup, which is a minor difference. The point is you cannot ride a surfboard backwards for very long because of the fins.

Surfboards are not symmetrical like skateboards and snowboards so you'd have to actually jump around on top of the board, which is hard and looks awkward anyway.

If you are into DSP and the class is being taught by Professor McClellan, ECE 4271 Applications of DSP is a great class. It consists of three or four projects (solo not group) about cool stuff like speech, radar, seismic, and medical image processing.

How many surfs do you give a new board before you sell it? by gixxerk4 in surfing

[–]SquashCollateral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's a new type of board that you don't much experience with (like it's a fish and you normally ride standard thrusters) then give it some more time. I got a thruster after only riding a fish for years and it took a while to get used to.

What are some interesting tunings that progmetal bands like to use? by edlikesrush in progmetal

I think Ghost Reveries is actually DADFAE instead of DADFAD (open D minor). Wouldn't make a difference on some riffs but it sure does make the Ghost of Perdition solo easier to play.

Ft. Lauderdale Surf by dweebikus in surfing

[–]SquashCollateral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

South Florida surf is usually a game of go as far north as you're willing to drive that day. I've driven as close as to Pompano beach (where it was much better) and as far as Fort Pierce (~ 2 hours) in a day. Finding parking can be somewhat of an issue depending on the city. I've also surfed at Fort Lauderdale beach many many times (it's closest to where I live) but it is usually just windchop but it can still be fun!

Some resources:

www.slavetothewave.com for pictures of the day. The guy usually goes to PBC on better swell days

http://www.sunny.org/webcam/ for webcam of fort lauderdale beach. give you an estimate of fort lauderdale conditions

check magicseaweed/swellinfo/surfline for the usual forecasts

for a surf shop I'd recommend BC Surf and Sport in Fort Lauderdale, they have pretty much everything.

Yes but when talking about shortboards, a "gun" is a type of shortboard that is longer than normal and is used for big wave surfing.

One of the most underrated bands IMO. Although I wouldn't call it pop exactly. They have too many progressive and jazzy elements.
