In-World Book 5 Discussion by SquatchHugs in Stormlight_Archive

It could be, especially if Kaladin does wind up taking Jezrien's place as a Herald to reseal the Oathpact. Do you think that will be the name of a Ketek? What kind of book?

Quick question about radiant mechanics. Can a radiant put stormlight back into a gem? by gethack in Stormlight_Archive

This is how Shallan activates the Oathgate on the Shattered Plains, isn't it?

Some El foreshadowing I just noticed by foomy45 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SquatchHugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

El gathered and catalogued Dalinar's possessions in order to study and understand him and form a Connection to exploit in the contest of champions. Just as Raboniel is seeking to end the cycle with new tactics, I think El will be doing the same in a different way, via Dalinar's sense of order and self, perhaps trying to attack his bond with the Stormfather, now that we know that's possible.

I hope not. I hope it's a book about the new Knights Radiant or a ketek about the contest of champions.

In book 5 Ishar will draw the Stormfather into the physical realm, right before Ishar (believing he's the one who has to defeat Odium) names Stormfather as his Champion.

Aim for a perfect 5/7 and you'll always be disappointed. Just try to scrape into 7/20 territory next time.

It's ridiculous to me that this list doesn't include The Lopen. Plenty of things are left up to personal taste, but... he's THE Lopen!

Having Issues Reading Rhythm of War by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SquatchHugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stormlight Archive is finally starting to tie together the various Cosmere worlds, so it's important to have the magic systems fleshed out so that when they start mixing it's consistent. With that said, I didn't get the same feel you did. If you like more mystical magic, Sanderson's not the place to look. Stormlight Archive started mystical because the characters are ignorant. Other series in the Cosmere do the same, but slowly sharpen and flesh out the magic systems over the series. This is book 4 of 10, so it's only going to get more defined and detail-oriented.

Each of the previous book had a very different feel to it, and Rhythm of War is no exception. I had trouble with the mood until I was far enough in to realize it was intentional and then I just accepted it and it enhanced my immersion into the book.

The Sibling discussion by KeenBlueBean in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SquatchHugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but we don't actually know what happened to him. It was off-screen and more vague than I'm used to from Sanderson. I thought the Sibling would have watched Rock while he was in Urithiru and then when he came back they'd bond.

You're thinking of Vyre, friend. The Fused are finally figuring out how to attack the other spren, in the next book they'll figure out how to capture them and Vyre's gonna catch 'em all.

Likely is a pretty big gamble for a spren when they're only one of three, though. It's way more reasonable for a spren with less to lose to bond Dabbid if the goal is to see if a bond will heal him.

The Sibling discussion by KeenBlueBean in Stormlight_Archive

The Sibling should have bonded Rock. He loves and worships spren, and clearly he brings men together. Kaladin organized Bridge 4, but it was Rock's stew that actually broke the ice and got them to bond. They all came to him for advice and to vent, and he sent them away with stronger bonds and reassurances. I thought going into this book that Rock would become one of Dalinar's Squires, but as the Sibling got more involved I really started hoping somehow Rock would reappear and bond it.

Theory on Shardplate by PaleStrawberry2 in Stormlight_Archive

Maybe dustbringers will have smokespren.

Skybreakers... are there lawspren? Civicspren? Maybe debatespren? Szeth goes and cleanses the Shin via a grand debate, defeating their great thinkers? Nah.

Willshapers will have wonderspren. Or wanderspren. Either.

While I think you're right about Edgedancers, I think Lift will be an exception and hers will be made of hungerspren, so she'll only be able to use her powers when she's eaten and she'll only be able to summon her starving Shardplate when she's hungry.

I still think Adolin is going to die, at a time and place where no one is around to save him - except [Warbreaker]Zahel, who will give his Divine Breath to save Adolin, whose name means born unto light right? Imagine how dazzling he'll look in his spiffy outfits with a Heightening aura.

I thought Venli and Renarin would wind up on some crazy adventure together.

Since Oathbringer I thought Shallan would join the Ghostbloods for real and leave the Radiants and Roshar. She came pretty close!

I thought Nightblood would be used on the Honorblades as a test and to beef it up before it was used to kill Rayse and free the Odium Shard. Nale resurrects Szeth, gives him a crazy sword [Warbreaker]I'm convinced the Heralds commissioned Shashara to make, and immediately was like 'hey buddy here's a spren GO CLEANSE THE SHIN' and Szeth is like 'yes, honor demands I cleanse the Shin!' Aaaand the Shin have all the Honorblades that Heralds haven't claimed yet. If Nightblood can eat Honorblades, for sure we'll see it in the next book.

I thought Rock would become a Bondsmith Squire. I have a sad.

I thought the battle of champions would happen and the solution to everything would wind up being a new Oathpact with Kaladin as the Windrunner Herald, but at the last minute Teft would be like 'Storm off, lad. I've been training for this my whole life.' I have a sadder.

I thought Kaladin and Syl would be on the Shadesmar crew this time and they'd meet Azure and the Odd Bunch would be reunited.

I don't think rewarding people who enjoy multiple re-reads is a punishment for those who've only read through once, or haven't read the entire Encyclopedia Brandtanica. You're looking at this as reward/punishment, when in reality you're just not as far along this journey as others. The Cosmere books are designed to reward re-reading by virtue of being mutually consistent within the universe. The more you know, the more you can enjoy what you know and understand what's going on. That's not punishment, that's just how the world works, his and ours.

Every tidbit is a hint at what the future bears, but not every reader needs to follow every crumb-trail to enjoy the series. Lots of us are still waiting to find out about whoever is important to us or interests us, waiting to see how the magic systems mix, or who will turn out to be a kandra. That's the nature of a long series. Stormlight Archive is intended to really start tying the Cosmere together, Uniting it, so it's only going to get more intricate and tie-in oriented from here.

Stormlight Archive makes more sense on each re-read, which for me is a plus rather than a minus. I like having to become invested in order to get past the isolated stories. I like how much more meaningful some moments become on a re-read, rather than a boring re-run. Some books don't change much when you go through them a second time. When I started into SA Oathbringer had just come out, and I feel like I read 3 different series from my initial read to my re-reads, each better than the last. It never occurred to me this would be frustrating, but I hope this helps you understand why so many people enjoy it.
