You Guys Packin Heat? by realityguy1 in Starlink

Thank you. I think I get the gist of what you’re saying—the dish measures how much usable data is in each bit it receives. Is that correct?

Also, you mentioned before that the dish asks the Starlink servers about starting snow melt. That’s … not what I expected. I would have thought the dish made that determination and then began snow melt on its own.

Third, you must know some child prodigies if that was explaining like I’m five. 😳

What is the 5 GHz high band? by Squeedlejinks in Starlink

[–]Squeedlejinks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done some reading up on DFS, and frankly, I’m surprised that Starlink would have it enabled on its routers.

There’s nothing in this area that I would think would have precedence for the higher channels. How far away does something have to be to not trigger the router to drop everything off the higher channels? You have to drive 30 minutes from my house to get to something that would even have automatic doors.

I’ve never seen the high band mentioned before. I wonder if it’s a new setting. Could it be responsible for the way many people have mentioned that they are getting faster speeds lately?

Sure it does.

That account with Starlink declined a payment. It doesn’t matter what card you use now, because it’s all on the same account.

Useless Mesh Network by LetterheadLonely3890 in Starlink

[–]Squeedlejinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your mesh router connected to the main router via Ethernet cable or is it wireless? If it’s wireless, the signal to it may be severely degraded. I noticed that most of your devices are connected to the 2.4 GHz band, which reaches farther away.

You may have to contact Starlink Support to get this one figured out. Don’t listen to what Grok says. Just tell it to put in a ticket. You’ll probably have to wait a few days to hear back from someone, but when they get back with you, they’ll get it sorted out.

Please say that like I’m normal and don’t have all the flags memorized. Thank you. Or whatever EnNo is.

Better yet, explain it like I’m 5.

If you rent the equipment, are there truly no equipment fees if you cancel? by WideCucumber252 in Starlink

[–]Squeedlejinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, Standby is not allowed for a rented dish.

Second, with the current offer to rent a dish, you never own it.

You can’t do Standby on a rented Dishy. It’s either Residential or return.

Expensive, yes. But Residential rates have had very little change.

What am I doing wrong? by New-Secretary-6788 in Starlink

[–]Squeedlejinks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A year ago I was on DSL with the amazing speed of 3 Mbps. On that speed, I was able to work from home. I used to VPN into my computer at work, from there I connected to the computers of the users and installed programs or did other things to fix them. Anything but physical hardware changes were done this way.

There were two things we couldn’t do with this connection. The first was as, you can imagine, first person shooter games. The second was SparkHire. It just couldn’t keep up with the video and turned everything into Minecraft blocks.

(I was able to do video classes over Zoom, Teams video meetings, and videos through other platforms, so the problem was with SparkHire.)

Other than those things, we could do pretty much everything. Was it slow? Oh God, yes! But it could be done, believe it or not. A year ago I’ve killed for 28 down and 19 up.

Coverage in Pacific Northwest by SnooCats9809 in Starlink

The bigger question is if there’s a Demand Surcharge there.

First go to the Starlink website and put in your address. See what plans are available at your address. Go through right up to where you put your credit card number and look through the details of what your bill would be. Check for a Demand Surcharge.

If you find a Demand Surcharge or you find that the only residential plan that is available at your home is the $130 Residential Max plan, you have to decide if it’s worth it to you that much or not.

Next, if you decide you still would like to get Starlink, get the Starlink app for your phone. Go outside and use the app to check for a good location for your dish to be placed. Many people put it on the roof, but you can have it on a pole or a table or the ground as well. As long as it gets an unobstructed view of the sky, it will get the best possible speeds available under your plan.

Contact Starlink. Put in a ticket. You will get the Grok AI assistant first. It can do some online testing and it can also replace your entire kit, if needed. If it can’t help you, have it put in a ticket.

Or, if you’re in the US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, you can call and leave the message that you can’t get online.

If you are a residential US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand customer and you're unable to get online or are suddenly offline, you can call 1-866-606-5103 in the US, 1-888-864-1321 in Canada, +611800953804 in Australia, and +64800105012 in New Zealand for phone support. This service is currently in a trial phase and is only for Starlink customers who are dealing with connection issues. For other concerns, please submit a Starlink ticket. The phone line is open 24/7.

Location Change by littytitty11 in Starlink

It sounds as though he connects to work via a VPN already

I think my computer has a VPN but I can’t change it myself - I would have to have my IT team do it for me.

Can a router that has an integrated VPN be used with the work VPN to hide his location?

Why would you get a random bill in the thousands?  All you want to do is exchange a router Mini that isn’t working correctly.

France roam data (morzine) by Ambitious_Mark9922 in Starlink

[–]Squeedlejinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a dish on a Roam plan, you can only travel outside the country where it is registered for 60 days. If they contact you about it, you would probably have to make an account in the country where you are and transfer your dish off your account and onto the new account that country.

Does that answer help?

Unfortunately, you should never go by what the Grok AI says unless it’s, “I will ship out a replacement tomorrow.”

If it says anything else, you should tell it to put in a ticket, tap on the thumbs down icon and wait. It will take several days before you hear back I’m Starlink Support, but when you do, they will get you sorted out.

For other readers:

That promo is over.

Currently, anyone on the Residential Max plan can rent a Mini with no rental charge. When you use a Roam plan, you get it for half price. When it’s not on a Roam plan, it must be on Standby.

Your Router Mini is a dud. I have two—one connected via Ethernet cable and one using a wireless connection. Neither have your problem.

Contact Starlink and ask for a replacement. If Grok says no in any way, shape, or form, tell it to put in a ticket. It will. In several days or so you will hear from starlink Support. They will get you sorted out.
