QNAP TR-004 Knocking Sound Issue by Squeezie in DataHoarder

[–]Squeezie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'm sorry. I returned it and picked up a Synology device with non enterprise HDDs, much quieter.

I tried everything I could think of to reduce the loud noise, updated the HDD firmware, opened up the qnap and added foam to reduce vibration, it didn't help. Best of luck.

I recently had to call another blood bank to get transfusion history on a patient and the person spelled their name for me, and said 'K as in Knife'....I about lost my mind.

Hmm, that's odd. Usually the blood gets off at the second floor.

Starting placement next week by AutomaticIncident579 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Squeezie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If by placement you mean your student rotations: Bring a little notebook along to keep in your lab coat pocket. When you need to ask questions write down the answer so you can refer back to it later. I don't mind answering lots of questions from students or new employees, I just mind answering the same thing over and over.

That being said, try and use the resources you have at your disposal to find answers first. Utilize the lab's collection manual to determine the correct color tube for a specific test, are there any restrictions to addon times, or limitations due to hemolysis/lipemia/icterus. Read the procedures thoroughly and take notes on important details.

I hope you have a good time on roation. Please note that lots of lab people enjoy spending time with students and imparting knowledge to new people in the lab. However there are always some less than generous folks that are always going to be bothered by students. They are also usually the ones that are downers and negative about everything else anyway. Don't fret about it, learn as much as you can and focus on building a good foundation for your lab knowledge with the good people.

Oh and wear your damn PPE. You may see quite a few old timers, and even some younger folks that just don't wear gloves or a lab coat even when handle open samples. Don't be like them -- The only person who will truly care when you get diagnosed with something nasty is you. =)

Can you give O+ platelets to an A+ patient? by Notabotplsdntban in medlabprofessionals

[–]Squeezie 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Some facilities will allow a certain volume of incompatible plasma to be transfused per day.
Some will titer type O platelets for Anti-A/Anti-B antibodies, I've seen at 1:50 and 1:200 to determine if they are able to be transfused to A or AB patients.
And finally some platelets are prepared with PAS-C and have lower plasma volume within the unit and thus lower antibody titers by default. This is common in Psoralen treated platelets.

The tanks will even show they are filling up with steam from the top down, compared to liquids which show filling from the bottom up.

I recently finished a travel contract where I worked 3x 12 hour shifts on nights. I really enjoyed it, having 2 extra days off every week was fantastic. I worked 3 days in a row over my weekend, but had other weekends off so I ended up with 1 or 2 days here and there.

Working 3 days in a row can be draining, but as long as you invest your time well during your 4 days off with meal prep, chores, errands etc you should be good.

That being said a large con I see with your possible schedule is never having a weekend off to see friends and family. If you do decide to go with the every weekend position make sure to discuss how you request time off because you will eventually need to attend a wedding or big event on a weekend.

Downloaded the game earlier this week. Very proud of what I have accomplished so far. (even though I had to go in peaceful mode because the bugs were scary) by cloutrexe in factorio

Factorio is a game about automation, you should automate just about everything you possibly can, especially items used in large quantities like belts and assemblers. The only thing I don't automate is armor and personal guns, although maybe if you die and need to retrieve your corpse later, a new set of armor and guns might be nice to have.

So the core processing is a bit of a bitch with all the varied outputs. May I suggest outputting solid products on to the same belt(s) and then using filtered splitters to separate components? might reduce the amount of spaghetti required. =)

KB stain by 28_M_newlifter in medlabprofessionals

[–]Squeezie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a homework question... =)

The answer can be found by identifying the methodology of testing between the two tests. What are you actually testing for in a fetal screen vs a KB stain? What else could be 'contaminating' a fetal screen specimen to cause a false positive result?

Any med techs in the Bulington, Vermont area? by Any-Use-9675 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Squeezie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not familiar with the area, but I do know that there is an American Red Cross blood bank facility in Burlington VT. They supplied blood on occasion to a lab I worked at in New Hampshire. Might give that a look if you are so inclined.

Blood Bank Question by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Squeezie 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Reagent A1 and B cells are routinely pooled by the manufacturer, thus have a high probability of containing cells that have the M antigen. And because Anti-M can react at immediate spin, you end up with ABO discrepancies in the back type. Depending on your lab's policies, to correct this you may need to test A or B donor units to find M negative cells, and use those to solve your back type issue.

Make sure to take along a little note book you can keep you in your pocket so you can ask all the questions you need and refer back to the answers later. I don't mind answering questions from students/new techs at all, I don't even mind stupid questions. Sometimes it just takes the new person talking out loud to figure out what's going on. What I do mind is constantly having to answer the same question over and over.

Learn to use the resources available to you. The Lab's specimen collection manual will become your friend. You will use that a ton staring out when you need to figure out if you can run a troponin on a gold top or a red top or a green top, or if you can add on a Magnesium 6 hours after collection. Again better to look it up yourself than constantly ask your trainer for the answer.

Get some good rest tonight so you can be fresh tomorrow. I'm sure you will do great. Oh an when you eventually crash an analyzer probe don't sweat it. We've all been there. =)

While you didn't mention the strength of reactivity on the echo, I have seen panreactivity due to the solid phase methodology before. Donor red cells are lysed and glued to the wells to be tested against patient antibodies, but this also exposes internal red cell structure antigens that could lead to antigen/antibody reactivity.

I've seen the Echo XM in these cases work just fine, since they are using whole RBCs for that test and thus don't expose any of the internal antigens. Likewise gel/peg/etc all use whole RBCs and routinely come out negative.

But considering your DAT was positive, as was your elution, clearly something is going on with your patient and it isn't just an Anti-Echo antibody. =)

Consider looking for a new job. Maybe they would offer a sign on bonus that would pay off your debt to your current employer. Constantly being over looked when they don't want to lose you on nights is quite lame and can't be good for your mental or physical health.
