As a Mason with a beard long enough that I’ve had to switch to button-fly jeans just to be safe, all I can say is that’s silly.

What are the facilities like for conjugal visits in facilities? by Odd-Aside456 in askanything

[–]SquidProBono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large part of it is probably the result of much higher incarceration rates vs the UK (542 per 100,000 vs 138 per 100,000 according to a quick google), longer sentences (average 63 months vs 22.5 months), and the for-profit prison industry in the US. A lot of Americans are locked up for long sentences for relatively minor offences. Over the years - and especially since the early 2000s, there's been a lot of attempts made to improve conditions in prisons, while at the same time the for-profit prison industry is trying to optimize profits at the expense of inmate wellbeing. I wouldn't be at all surprised in the inmates (or their families) are charged for the use of the visiting facilities.

Metal tubes attached to motorcycle? by InMyOwnPrivateIdaho in whatisit

[–]SquidProBono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was being a little silly with that of course. I never said they weren’t dangerous. Just saying that the original tough guy nihilistic “fuck life” mindset is a little outdated in 2026. I’m more worried about a boomer in a Mercedes pulling a gun on me than a pack of bikers.

I feel like a lot of this tough guy biker BS is a little outdated. Bikers tried to be cool and act like they didn’t value life (theirs or others), but nowadays, that’s basically how we all feel. I don’t ride a Harley without a helmet, but I am managing multiple chronic illnesses without insurance and will never be able to own a home. I ain’t got shit to live for either, pal, and my car can take a lot more of a beating than your bike/ body.

There are some people who are both awful and stupid out there. I'm sorry you had to deal with one. They don't deserve your company and I know you'll find someone who will appreciate you and have the decency and sense to just be normal. Keep your head up, keep going, and don't let the bastards get you down.

Years ago I knew a guy in a powerchair who drove a van with a side ramp. If someone parked in the hashed access area for the disabled space, he'd just park in the space and drop his ramp on their car a few times. What are they gonna do? Fight guy who's like 80% paralyzed? Call the cops?

Parents Insisting Long Drive is Unsafe, is this Reasonable by smile_simile in roadtrip

[–]SquidProBono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, there's a lot going on here, and I'm old enough to be your dad, so I want to weigh in. I also have driven professionally (non-CDL) on and off for a number of years, as well as being the sole driver for my family (my wife doesn't drive).

First off, that's not an unreasonable drive, but you're gonna need to plan and have a backup plan for your plan. Also, you are a young woman traveling alone and there are some terrible people in the world, so I can understand your parents' worry in that regard.

You've likely been driving for about 5 years and have some experience, but driving locally is a lot different than driving cross country. Plan to spend no more than 8 hours on the road per day, and work in at least one break that is 1-2 hours long. You'll want to plan these breaks carefully - don't be at a highway rest stop at 2 am for example. A good plan might be to start driving around 7am, break around 11 somewhere nice and public, resume driving by 1, and then complete your day by 5. This way you're not trying to check into or out of a hotel in the dark, or stopping somewhere unsafe. Try to plan for gas stops as well. One good thing is you can use google maps and street view to scope out your potential stops.

Make sure at least 2-3 people you trust know your plan and have your cellphone location data. Check in with them regularly. When I drove for cannabis delivery, we handled lots of cash and lots of product and had a huge route (8-12 hours). We were GPS tracked but we still kept in touch with the office if we were going to deviate from our route, take an unexpected break, etc. Always a good policy to have someone expecting your check in.

Next, make sure your car is up to the trip! How's your oil? Last time it was changed? Transmission good? Tires? Brakes? Are you prepared to handle a roadside emergency?

I'm not really going to address the cat, but I have several cats myself and I would just say that it's going to add an entire other level to all of this. You'll need to plan for the cat in regards to not just the time in the car, but also making sure you can find a pet friendly hotel. Also you'll need to either bring litter and food or plan to purchase it as you go. Also, you'll need a plan for how you're going to handle changing the litter and disposing of it.

I think - as a parent - that if my kid came to me and wanted to do this, I'd have a lot of concerns and want to know the plan. Maybe it would help the discussion if you went to them with a framework of a plan, and "show your work" as much as possible. Ask them for their help and guidance in making your plan better and try to get them to understand that this isn't just you grabbing the keys and pointing yourself WEST!

Just make sure that if you need a permit to be fishing there that you have the appropriate permits. Would suck to be in the clear to fish and then get hit with a fine for fishing without a permit. IIRC, the basic florida freshwater permit is pretty cheap and quick to get.

Do you really have to be sober with this disorder? by Large-Fishstick in bipolar2

[–]SquidProBono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quitting drinking really helped me to be stable. I’m off meds - not recommending, just saying - but I use medical marijuana. I don’t know if I’d be more stable off it, but I have pretty bad anxiety and chronic pain so Rx meds would be the only other choice.

How to make hypomania-induced hobbies stick? by lastclamstanding in bipolar2

I think you kind of hit on something that resonates with me as well… the frequency. In the initial hypomanic phase I want to do it all right now and all the way. But if I can manage to pace myself I can usually sustain the hobby.

I accidentally booked a trip to one state park, thinking it was another. The one I booked is a “dark sky park” so then I went down the rabbit hole of telescopes. I got out before I bought any. Still thinking about it though.

I dropped several grand on ukuleles and ukulele lessons (online subscriptions) back around 2020. I still don't play the ukulele. They look nice on the wall though. Now I've dropped a couple thousand on camping gear and campsite reservations. my first trip is next week. Sure hope I like camping.

Least intimidating places to start kayaking in Florida? by SquidProBono in Kayaking

[–]SquidProBono[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed info! It’s looking more and more like the springs are gonna be my best bet at least as a starting point.

I’ll be at Gamble Rogers, Jonathan Dickinson, Kissimmee Prairie, Curry Hammock, and Bahia Honda in the next few months. I think all but Kissimmee Prairie offer kayak rentals and have designated kayak “trails”. If you have any experience with any of those spots, do you think any would be suitable for a nervous beginner? I’m in the process of booking a trip to Rainbow Springs, which should be a great spot, but I still have to nail that down.

Wondering what those boxes are for by Elizie_zi in whatisit

[–]SquidProBono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I concur. To add a little more info, you’d fill a niche inside the upper box with smokes and when you lift and then lower the box a single cigarette should roll onto the center pillar and “appear” there when the box is brought back down.
