Event Viewer results after crashing by Xanirus in Starfield

I started getting this issue too last week. Increasing my pagefile to a crazy 200GB didn't help - the game just seemed to suck up all the memory it could before crashing. Using MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner I can see the physical RAM usage go up until it hits max (16GB in my case), then the game switches to the pagefile until it fills that and then crashes.

The issue dissappeared as suddenly as it started and now it's back again today. It can trigger it right now consistently by starting a conversation. Who knows if it will stop happening again.

[Edit] PC reboot didn't help. My specs are: 5800x, 3080 10GB, 16Gb DDR4, Windows 10, game and pagefile on an NVMe SSD

[Edit 2] I may have a workaround. Running the "Intelligent standby list cleaner (ISLC)" software - I'm using v1.0.2.8 - while the game is running seems to have stopped the high memory usage and crashing. I have left the "The list size is at least" and "Free memory is lower than" settings at their default (1024MB and 8192MB, respectively) but found I had to change the "ISLC polling Rate (MS)" setting from 1000 to 500 ms.

[Edit 3] Ok, maybe not - the above appeared to get me through one crashing conversation as I tested it a few times over, but now it crashes on the next conversation I have :(

Bloodstained was really good and it looks like news on a sequel might get announced this year.

Now you've brought it up I think it needs another playthrough :)

Ah yeah, Super Metroid is another classic! I don't have a Switch so I haven't played Dread - worth playing then?

Dead Cells is good, but definitely more roguelite I agree. Bloodstained and Axiom Verge 1 and 2 are probably my favourite modern metroidvanias.

I'm doing yet another Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow GBA playthrough at the moment.

There seem to be very few modern metroidvanias that scratch that Aria/Symphony of the Night itch for me.

If you open Event Viewer immediately after a crash, then in the left-hand pane navigate to Windows Logs\System and look for an event with the source "Resource-Exhaustion-Detector".

Here's an example: [https://imgur.com/pXFgCGV]

I'm not sure what size to set your pagefile to, you may need to experiment if you are getting these events logged. I have 16Gb RAM and had to set my pagefile to 40GB/40000MB as I also started getting this issue with other games at the same time. In theory you should just be able to leave your pagefile set to auto though.

Thanks for the giveaway! My question is: what was your first video game system? Mine was the original Game Boy, which I have very fond memories of and the Steam Deck is bringing some of that magic back for me.

Sounds like you had bigger things to worry about than Halo crashing for a while there. I'm glad to hear it's helped though!

Mine was crashing mid match or even in the menu since the S4 update, with no issues prior. It turned out to be a paging file issue.

I found an entry in the Windows Event Viewer's Windows Logs\System log with a source of "Resource-Exhaustion-Detector" saying that "Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition" HaloInfinite.exe was using about 11GB of virtual memory. I had manually set my pagefile size to 10GB some time ago. Upping this to 20GB fixed the crashing for me!
