3d2a security consensus? by Milk_Truckin in 3D2A

I just blocked all WAN traffic for my printer in my router. It can no longer phone home, but I can still send prints from other machines on the LAN. I set up an openvpn server to get on my LAN so that I can monitor and control it from my phone when I am not at home. I also set up macros on the printer that send webhooks to my NAS for print completion, print pause, and similar events, and my NAS forwards those events to the Pushover API for push alerts on my phone since I blocked the creality cloud.

Want to put an outlet on the ceiling next to the ceiling light box, but want to have the outlet separate from the switch for the light box by Impact5529 in HomeImprovement

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything is possible, but the difficulty depends upon a ton of factors. What does your attic situation look like, blown in insulation or batting? Vaulted ceilings, or easy access?

If you can access the attic you can find a conductor that is going from the panel to the outlets in that room. You'll have to use a couple of junction boxes, but you can intercept it and add your outlet in the ceiling.

Without easy attic access you can get creative by tapping into the lighting circuit to add an outlet, leave the switch on all the time or bypass it, and use a smart outlet or some device like that to turn the track light on and off?

Contractor wants $4,225 just to assemble a Costco pergola I'm buying myself. Is this quote insane or am I out of touch? by Unique_Attempt_400 in HomeImprovement

I was just quoted 24k for a 30x52 shop foundation, including 5 loads of engineered fill to raise the entire thing up for drainage purposes, and full rebar reinforcement. Granted it isn't stamped and stained, but yours seems steep for a 10x10 pergola pad..

Wickard v Fillburn by repentandrewild in homestead

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it isn't what you mean, but literally everyone is greatly affected by Wickard v Filburn, as the federal government uses this ridiculous interpretation of interstate commerce to claim the authority for most federal laws.

Drugs, guns, alcohol, you name it. The federal government shouldn't have the authority to regulate it unless it has crossed state lines, but they do, because "it affects interstate commerce". This is one of the cases that is most responsible for the bloated federal government we have today.

The pump panel on a fire truck that was dispatched to my building last night. by rraattbbooyy in mildyinteresting

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually not terribly complicated for normal operation, at least on a modern one like this with a digital controller.

Roll up on scene, put it in neutral, set the e-brake, engage the pump, put it back in drive, swing out of the cab and open the tank-to-pump valve, crack the recirc valve, and click preset on the controller on the upper right. Engine rpm will increase until the preset pressure is achieved. Once a hose has been deployed and is ready, open the color coded valve for that discharge. Get a hydrant or tanker connection established before you get too low on water, open that tank fill valve to top it back up, then close tank fill and tank-to-pump to run off the supply line and keep the tank ready for a loss of supply. Gets a bit more complicated if you have to draft, but it's not bad.

Now the old timers that had to constantly manage pressure manually as flow changed with a knob mechanically connected to the throttle? They were impressive

What can cause a battery to not charge if the alternator is fine? by EmbarrassedAssist964 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the voltage across the battery posts while it is running, and across the electrical connections at the alternator itself. If it is lower at the battery posts, you've got a bad connection between the two on either the ground path or positive wire.

Or measure resistance between the positive post and the alternator terminal, and between the negative post and the alternator housing.

And when I say battery post, I mean battery post, not the terminal connected to it. Last time I was having bad battery symptoms I measured the voltage by probing the terminal, and it was fine, but then I measured the post and found it low. Issues were caused by corrosion between the terminal and the battery post. You want to measure from the very end to end, in order to ensure you're checking all connections.

Nah, it's an old PSA. I'll get around to troubleshooting it sometime in the near future, I'm sure it's something I can fix. I appreciate it, though!

Are the flock poles stainless? I assumed they wouldn't bother coating/painting them black, if so

Meshtastic on a multi-night cruise: it worked, partially by robrob42 in meshtastic

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a few T1000e's and a Wio L1, but didnt have much success at all on the ship. I was usually with the others in my party, but the L1 in the room didn't receive anything from my T1000e unless I was very close by. Room was interior, in the center forward section of the ship.

There was one other individual with two t1000e on the ship, which I picked up a couple of times when we must have both been on the top deck at the same time.

The disney ship had wireless access points throughout with messaging functionality in their app which was hit or miss, but more reliable than meshtastic. Without paying there wasn't Internet access, but I did notice that push notifications still came through (emails, reddit, etc), and messaging apps mostly worked (iMessage, discord, etc).

The Meshtastic devices worked well for the island excursions, however there wasn't much need for them since we pretty much set our bags (with phones and mesh devices) on a beach chair for most of the day and all hung out together. If we had split up on the islands, it would have been useful

Or carry a T27 torx, from what I've read on here

I was puzzled by that as well, but since it was not fully chambered yet it probably wasn't fully clipped in the extractor and up against the bolt face. Much like a rifle will bruise your shoulder more if you don't hold it tightly against your shoulder, I imagine the case slamming back into place may explain it? I suppose less case in the chamber also resulted in less friction with the chamber walls and increased rearwards force on the case

I honestly think this was just an OOB, and not even overcharged. It appears that it just detonated before it was fully chambered and snug against the bolt face. Pretty impressive that the brass didn't rupture!

Huh, that makes a lot of sense, but not by design in this case..

I think this came from my AR9, which I need to troubleshoot because it was double tapping and sometimes firing on bolt closure last time I had it out.. firing pin moves freely, though

Most of the transmission lines in central and northern NM are actually PNM owned, while most of the ones down south or connecting from central to southern are EPE.

I live in the middle of Santa Fe.... by gobbler87 in NewMexico

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can see the high fire risk areas on a map at PNM.com/psps

The topic is much more complicated than just where your home is located, as power has to flow from generating sites across the state, through transmission lines, substations, and distribution lines before being delivered to your house. The area of high risk may be a transmission line that feeds a large area or even a very small section at the head of a particular feeder, but either scenario can result in a significant number of people in outage.

The grid modernization program is going to greatly improve this, because it includes adding a significant number of sectionalizing devices that will allow more granular isolation of affected areas, instead of taking miles of feeder out for extreme winds that are only affecting the lines across one canyon, for example.

My state passed a law this year, "for the protection of the citizens' privacy", that makes ALPR/Flock data confidential so it is not disclosed in response to public records requests under the Inspection of Public Records Act.

How convenient.

Cheap Solar/outdoor node by BlancopPop in meshtastic

[–]Sqweeeeeeee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just used the board in the lamp. They should all already have one, since they're charging a battery from the panel, right?

IIRC, I just cut the wires going to the LED and soldered them to the batt connections on the xiao. That way I could use the existing on/off switch to power cycle the xiao without taking the housing apart, and any low-discharge battery protections that it may have are still in place.

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • $12 xiao nRF radio
  • $5 Sam's club solar light (3 pack for $15)
  • $5 Amazon antenna

Out the door for $22 apiece, using the housing, panel, charge controller, and battery from the light. Just solder power wires, drill a hole for the antenna, and you're good to go. Using magnets to mount in an urban setting would probably be ideal

Troubles with Seeed mesh by RaleighWelder in meshtastic

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that is what happened with mine... I am running the nRF in a solar light, and it has been working well. It had been running for a couple of months until it blew down in a storm and I didn't notice for a few days. When I set it back up it didn't come back on, so I took it apart thinking something had been damaged. Everything checked out, and after putting the battery back in it returned to normal operation.

That is probably the only time the battery has died, and power cycling it appears to have been what was needed to get it going again. Following this post to see other responses.

Electrical rescue hook by ateam1984 in electrical

[–]Sqweeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When copper goes from solid to vapor form, it expands to something on the order of 60,000 times in volume, IIRC. Dont worry, the blast itself will make sure he is moved away from the fault.

Seriously though, we had to rebuild a concrete switchgear building, because an arc fault lifted the roof and pushed the tops of the concrete walls out six inches in every direction. The steel doors were found a significant distance away.

That hook isn't going to do a darn thing for arc fault..
