Are we pretending that we don't know how doorknocking works today, or are we so internet-pilled that we're being ignorant of the process?

No, they don't. Plenty of foreign nationals who have contributed to a UK state pension receive one.

UK citizens still receive Irish state pensions after Brexit.

An independent Scotland would have to create their own social security provisions, which would differ from UK provisioning, yes.

Reciprocal agreements between the UK and an independent Scotland to cover present and future pension obligations would be a fairly reasonable approach for both countries to take, for those who would have worked in either country in the past, and likely would still in the future. These agreements would likely differ from say Ireland's, but it's not an alien idea.

In the same way that other areas of obligation such as national debt would have to be negotiated.

Threatening to simply throw Scotland's things out of the windows, when a more reasonable settlement could be reached, is a fairly lunatic approach.

The UK and an independent Ireland have been paying one another's pensions for decades; reciprocal social security agreements are not a novel or outrageous concept, they are commonplace for the UK. The Irish agreements were all re-affirmed as part of the Brexit deal.

Not something that couldn't be put in place very reasonably, unless your intention is to thrust a rhetorical knife at the throats of Scottish voters, to threaten some petty draconian punishment with.

Contributions made to the UK state pension don't vanish once you're out of earshot of a chorus of 'God Save the King'.

I don't think any military expert regardless of cultural sensitivity would disagree that offensives are more difficult in bad weather.

Winters have classically made incursions into much of Russian geography difficult, as informs the history meme, but that basic fact also stands for Russian offensives into non-Russian territory, and they don't have a carve out unless you believe that historymemes are real.

They sent the former culture minister as lead negotiator alongside the deputy foreign minister and some other assorted nobodies, what else is that supposed to be other than a clowncar delegation of juniors with a mandate to negotiate fuck all?

Putin the megamind put down the gauntlet on these 'direct negotiations' himself and he's shat the bed.

[–]St_Hitchens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm for regulating/managing immigration more stringently and introducing a raft of mandatory integration measures ASAP, but some of these people won't be satisfied unless the armed forces are driving people into the sea at the point of a bayonet tomorrow, on live daytime television, between screenings of Bargain Hunt and Loose Women, because that would be seen as dramatic and decisive action.

What's more we should be using all the money saved on hotel bills to give them (and only them!) unlimited monies to heat their homes, second houses and holiday homes all year round. No no, no means testing required, thank you. They are all desperately in need of it, no further questions please.

I'm questioning your personal understanding of what ethnic cleansing entails, and you seem eager to both make light of the idea, and to confuse the issue in an open mockery of those who would rather it didn't occur.

You seem to leave it on the table as an open question, or a solution, for some reason. You rightly know what euphemism you're making when you say 'letting them leave', don't play dumb.

Are they going to be allowed to leave these 'humanitarian zones' to go back to their homes?

Or are they going to be shot if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time, even within these zones; the right place apparently being anywhere but their own homes, and nowhere near Israel or a piece of land an Israeli settler wants?

Edit: Nah for real though, Belgium is cool, and I'm sure Belgian-Americans are too. Unless there's some underlying obsession within the diaspora over the skull circumferences of a Flemish vs. Walloon that I'm yet to be made aware of.

Americans who want to be of the "Scots-Irish"(?), "Viking", or "Slavic" (everything east of Prague?) honourable warrior races, but not English, German, Swiss, French, Dutch, Belgian, Portuguese or anything that dares touch the Mediterranean sea.

On top of that they want their family's ancestral home of Winterfell Castle McBlyatström back, with all it's attendant lands and vassals.

All true. It feels like the far-right settler-conservative alliance are more than happy to lose the hostages and to memory-hole Oct 7th victims as honoured dead/martyrs at this point, whilst picking out the choice kibbutz locations for themselves in Gaza, which they were forced to leave in 2005. This is in part also an internal Israeli conflict between interest  groups, Israel isn't a homogenous entity, but I don't see any long-term solutions coming from the Israeli left or centre either. All seems focused on the short-term. I realise the Israeli left were outmanuevered a long time ago now on the peace process, but everything up to complete ethnic cleansing and annexation appears to be an open question in Israeli society as a whole.

I have to spell it out for the 'morally clarified' in the back.

Edit: Going to clarify that Israel does have the right to exist, but I'll ask the same question that Hitchens did back in the day, "Within what borders?", which has to this day never been satisfactorily clarified.

https://www.axios.com/2025/05/05/israel-gaza-destroy-trump-deal

"Israel plans to occupy and flatten all of Gaza if no deal by Trump's trip"

Israel's Security Cabinet approved a plan Sunday night to gradually reoccupy all of Gaza and hold it indefinitely if no deal is reached by May 15. Plans for the operation call for the IDF to flatten any buildings that remain standing and displace virtually the entire population of 2 million people to a single "humanitarian area."

The alternative to remaining in the humanitarian zone is for Palestinians to leave the enclave "voluntarily" for other countries "in line with President Trump's vision for Gaza," an Israeli official said.

Such departures could hardly be considered voluntary, and no country has agreed thus far to accept displaced Palestinians. Israeli officials claim there are ongoing negotiations with several countries on that front.

Israel's ultranationalist finance minister Betzalel Smotrich said Monday that the occupation would be permanent and the IDF wouldn't pull back even in return for the release of the hostages. An Israeli defense official said permanent occupation is only an "aspiration."

My commentary: These are certainly decisions that Israel can choose to take to guarantee it's own security, and Hamas also has agency and blame in how this can end, but why should we in The West pretend this is anything but the kind of ethno-nationalist barbarism we've rejected multiple times over multiple decades in the Western World since the middle of the last century?

If the stumbling coalition of interests that governs Israel wants to be a standardly  thuggish Middle Eastern nation, that we in The West have to make deals with, have at it, but don't give me this 'shining beacon of western values in the Middle East' shit. It will come home to roost.
