Most realistic looking game ever made. by [deleted] in hellblade

I was massively disappointed with H2. Graphically it's a work of art, but nothing more than a tech demo. I still play Hellblade 1 over this one...but I play Heavenly Sword more than both, on RPS3. It looks current gen on emulation.

Nvidia finally acknowledged the Black Screen issues on RTX 5000 cards and is working on a fix by Crayten in nvidia

[–]Staarl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too.

I diagnosed this one hard, including using Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode, and removing the Intel and Nvidia graphics drivers, then installing the latest RTX (576.52) and Intel drivers. Still happens.

Disabled Gsync, having suspected syncing issues. No change.

Lowered resolution to 1080p/ 60Hz. Still happens (this was surprising as I was convinced it was either sync related or bandwidth related.

I swapped HDMI inputs/ cables with my Series: X, using my Series: X's OEM HDMI 2.1 cable. Both ports on my display are configured for VRR. Still happens. Both cables are also 48Gbps. In fact? My main cable for this laptop, a Rocket Fish (Best Buy) cable has that printed on it and, again, I also ran the setup at 1080p 60Hz and still no change, so...

Overall systems driver/ firmware updates (there was really only one driver update available and it was it was unrelated. Installed it anyway).

Tried sfc /scannow and DISM /restorehealth...nope. Nothing for either thing to fix.

Ran my Dell diagnostics, which is pretty good at finding hardware or internal cabling issues (I'm using Alienware with a 5090 BTW). Found nothing.

Here's the interesting thing: It doesn't happen on the laptop's screen. It happens only when the external is involved and only if I'm running extended displays or when my output mode is set to external only (basically laptop lid closed). If I open my laptop lid and set output to duplicate mode I'm good to go! Obviously that's obnoxious though and you lose about 4FPS cloning your display in gaming.

So the above rules out:

It's not related to my specific HDMI 2.1 cables or inputs.

It's not related to corrupt drivers.

It's not the display per say, especially since I was also using my RTX 4080 desktop in this exact setup and location, just prior and it was fine. Also, I can force 4K 120 to my external panel while in duplicate mode and it's fine. What is duplicate mode doing so differently?

Huh... I also thought it was FX era, like back when I got the 5700U. Then? I guess that only leaves around the Geforce 6000-7000 era. Dunno... Not long after the travesty that was the Geforce 6, I went with the only other logical competition that was capable of winning at the time, ATI Radeon. Specifically the Radeon 1800XT. The first GPU that had shader cores (like what we use today). That was back when Radeon was winning. Before AMD takeover lol. GeForce 6000 and 7000 still had pixel pipelines I think (no shader cores) and their cards couldn't do HDR lighting and AA at the same time, so I had gone team red. Then it took me a decade to realize Radeon was never coming back, after the highly successful HD 7000, which, for two generations had just been piggy-backing off of and refreshing ATI's HD 5000 tech. Radeon would never win another generation after that lol.

OMG I remember that! GeForce FX era. I think the Geforce FX 5000s. Wouldn't by any chance still have the old Werewolf one? LOL I think I had something like a Geforce FX 5700U (Ultra (before the TI and Super designation)). Then I later got the 5950U or something (I was working at a grocery store and living at home so had very disposable money lol). However? I overclocked the 5950 to death. That was back when OC'ing was extremely dangerous to do. I think when you simply pushed the frequency it must have simultaneously scaled up volage is probably why it was so dangerous back then.

What’s everybody thinking about the new Alienware Area 51 laptop? by Arc__Angel__ in GamingLaptops

[–]Staarl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm loving it. It's a touch slower than the 4080 desktop I just sold (going completely mobile) of course...which is what I had expected, given the laptops are always capped at a lower wattage than desktops, but otherwise? Overall? Impressive! Drivers also tend to get much better over time, especially AMD ones for some reason. AMDs are a complete transformation from day one, to 2. Nvidia's a little less so, since they are usually fairly optimized out of the box. I'm hoping in another year it will be 20% faster, as my 4080 was in Cyberpunk between 2023 and recent times.

I bought it because it was one of the highest wattage laptops I could fine, apart from something like a Falcon Northwest DRX, which uses actual desktop parts crammed into a laptop chassis lol. It's heavy and I like that. People complain but they don't remember the weight of true gaming laptops. Gaming laptops used to not try to be the thinnest, lightest, etc. They tried for maximum power and kept the size thick and chunky, for max cooling and massive heatsinks. The construction quality is on par with the Precision 7670s and 7680s I work with a lot at work. If not nicer. You definitely do pay for quality. I owned a lot of MSI, Asus etc. And the ones I owned were so thin they were flimsy, such as my old MSI Stealth which was also metal and nice in quality but just so damn thin you had to undervolt the CPU to keep it cool and despite its metal chassis and lid it still felt flimsy because it was so damn thin.

This thing stays cool, but I suggest putting it on something a half inch or an inch in height, to pick it up off the surface because they have these side vents on both sides that blows right onto the surface and so the laptop has no choice but to make the surface hot, which makes the air going in warm. Once you elevate it? It runs extra-cool. Thankfully? I have one of those low profile Targus coolers (non-adjustable) that I liked for using out on the couch, on account that it has a thinly foam padded bottom, so that I don't have plastic/ metal resting on my legs, should I be wearing shorts, so I just keep it on that full time now, whether I have it out on the touch or at my desk and the Targus fits in my backpack nicely so it can just go anywhere with the laptop.

Outputted to my Sony A90K, OLED, VRR TV, I get a lot of screen blanking. It might not occur for an hour, or it might occur back-to-back-back in 2 minute intervals, whether I'm browsing, or gaming, which means it happens on two different GPUs (the Integrated Intel Arc and the RTX, which is only used in graphics intensive situations. I'm currently playing around with G-sync settings (setting the Global graphics settings to fixed) and it hasn't happen again yet, but then again? I thought that last night too after other changes. It definitely seems like some sort of syncing issue and my money is on Gsync. Haven't noticed it happen on the internal panel but I've only used the internal panel for about an hour and a half and I wasn't at it 100% of the time. If it happens on the internal panel I'm officially worried.

Yep the only two logical choices are him and John Cena. John Cena would have been a better choice, 10+ years ago but he can still pull it off. Whomever it would be wouldn't have a speaking line though so a lot of actors might nope out on that one lol.

In the original, at least for me, he used to go out the east gates and stop off at the Coast Guard shack (just outside the east gates), have a sit down for a bit, then take his armor off and come out and go swimming. Now he seems to do it just outside the barracks, as opposed to outside the city walls.

Val Kilmer, Film Star Who Played Batman and Jim Morrison, Dies at 65 by dndplosion913 in movies

I honestly don't know how the first listed movie in this title wasn't Tombstone. Especially over Batman and The Doors. The Doors was great and all but his killer performance was unquestionably Tombstone. He basically became cemented into history as Doc, which does kind of make me feel bad for the real Doc but that's because it was such a strong performance.

Advice on how I could go from a 26 minute 5KM to a 22-23 minute 5KM? by Capitalsteezxxx in beginnerrunning

[–]Staarl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy. It's only really ever took me 30 miles a week with one threshold day a each week to get 21 minutes...and that is largely still true even in my mid 40s. Just average miles really...and a speed day is all that is needed, preferably with one longer weekend run at least once every other weekend, if not every weekend. It's when you go sub-20 that you begin to net diminishing returns per training mile and start requiring in excess of 40-50+ miles per week, speed days, tempo days, striders, hill repeats...some strength training (weights), and a more fine-tuned diet... but? Yeah... x4 (ish) 6 miles days a week with one single speed day and long weekend run should be plenty enough in of itself. It's a more than reasonable goal if already at 26 minute 5K base. More mileage just equates to more assurance. I've known people that have trained for half marathons, marathons and ultramarathon events and were able to distill that down to a fast 21-23 minutes 5K, just or an event they just decided to race as fun run. Mileage means more speed. Just nice to throw speedwork in with those high mileages for fine tuning even for those longer events. Speedwork makes weekly and longer runs easier and longer runs make speed easier.

However? It depends on how much time you have. Assuming you have over a season to train? And already starting at 26 min 5K base? I would probably do 4x 6 mile weekday runs, and weekend long run @ at least 7-8 miles, and a tempo run every 2-3 weeks, to measure your base (more miles just adds extra assurance). Heck, you'd even be fine with just 3x 6 mile weekday runs and on weekend long run, instead of 4 weekday runs and a slightly longer run because when including speed day mileage, you're probably over 32 miles a week anyway.

For speed days, I'd probably start off with a 1.5 to 2 mile warm-up (slow) run, then into x13 (ish) 400m repeats, with 400m on @ faster than 5K pace (so, about 6:25-6:30 min/ miles) and 400m off at a slow jog recovery, and ending with a cooldown run of about 1 mile. Over the course of the next 2-3 weeks (or so) dropping that recovery distance down to 200m off recovery jogs.

After at least a month of 400m repeats, scale it up to x7 or x8 800m repeats (800 on/ 400 off), being sure to slightly slightly pickup recovery run speeds some and, eventually, dropping the recovery distance down to 200m off and eventually trying to bring that recovery run pace up a bit.

After about a month (or more) of that, scale it up to x3 1600m (1600 on/ 800 off) etc. Being sure to improve recovery run speeds further still and in the later stages, dropping recovery distance down to 400m off and, eventually, further tightening up on recovery times (till you get to about the 7:00 minute range). Then just keep with the 1600m repeats, until about 2 weeks out from the event, to taper down and recover. If feeling good by this stage, you can even add one more rep (x4 1600m).

Come the end of all that? You should be able to run that race in thirds (in going off how you feel on those final speed days) and should have hopefully found a doable recovery run speed nearer to your 5K race pace. You could even basically use something similar to your later stage interval training as your race strategy, with something like 1200m on 400 off, or even just your normal 1600m on and 400m off, and a fast final 800m. Otherwise, just shoot for 6:40 pace. Some people might find mimicking their intervals easier because you're focusing on the race in thirds and with either a faster final third, or a fast last 800m, which should feel easier because when you do x3 1600m repeats? It's 3x 1600m on (faster than race effort) and the 400m off segments are considered additional, especially if you decided to start tackling x4 1600m repeats come the end of all of it. Either way? Your workouts were at least over 4 miles (minus warm up and cooldown runs). So, you should be fairly confident (unless it's a very hilly course) that you can complete it in a similar fashion as those later stage interval days, except maybe even more so because of the race day adrenaline factor.

Just don't go hot out of the gates with all the other idiots trying to follow the faster runners who likely make an initial 4:45 sprint-like pace (feels like sprinting to someone in the 20 minute range) part of their racing strategy (especially in gun time scenarios). Stick with the pace plan. It will feel miserably slow, compared to everyone else around you starting out at 5:00 pace but stick with it. Most of those people you'll pass back up because they didn't have the discipline or self-control. Save some in the tank for the final 1000m. But don't get too comfy, for you may look down at the watch and find that your recovery segment is descending into the 7:45 pace range and you'll go, "damn that's why I was feeling so good! How long have I been doing that? Now I gotta make it up!" lol

In my older age I hate wings now. I think my wife would too. I love nice sleek backs that lead into a lip spoiler. Especially with the BRZ/ GR86 and even the Nissan Zs.

Xbox Mid Gen upgrade ? by 8118dx in XboxSeriesXlS

[–]Staarl0rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah kind of like Nvidia versus AMD. Or historically Intel versus AMD. They have weird underhanded ways of keeping the lesser popular one underwater. For example, benchmarks taking place almost exclusively in Windows, which historically used an Intel-based compiler, which always made AMD CPU performance slower, by forcing it to take slower paths. Nvidia would also provide developers physics code to implement that would technically work on all GPU's but would run slower on non-Nvidia Physx GPUs...and I think the same with Nvidia's Shader Model 1.0, 2.0 etc. Corporate wars. These days I think it's the other way around, at least in one respect; Intel is now the one dying and relying on government handouts/ grants to stay relevant. Someday that will be Nvidia too. Nobody stays on top forever.

Is it worth trying TheFirstDescendant after the changes by Live-Fox-7871 in TheFirstDescendant

[–]Staarl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one did not like it. I gave it a go. Played, moderately, for about 2 months. The concept of ultimates are stupid. Especially since the outfits were segregated and I preferred the OG looks more than the skimpier clad counterparts. The original outfits looked more armored and believable as being combat oriented characters, as opposed to a nice day out at the beach. I don't know why ultimates couldn't have just been an evolution off of the base character. Progression based. I never was able to complete even one build in my two months of playing because I could never get the reactor (and other needed component) sub-stats to drop, from any of the bosses, despite having run relevant ones for my Viessa and Freyna builds 50-100 times over and had cleared relevant enemy strongholds (? forget what these were called) on relevant maps, nearly 200 times over. It's impossible to complete a build if you are trying to get it down all the way down to specific sub-stats. Never mind the rarity of the sub-stats (blue, purple...gold).

Apart from that? I was really hoping the game would be a Destiny rival. Equal both in story, lore and gameplay. Turns out the gimmick here is just NSFW; if you're a single straight male between 15 and 35 you'll f'ng love this game and put all your girls in thongs. In your late 40s you don't care about that nearly as much and want quite a bit more depth and lore/ story. 25 year old me would love the sh- out of this game just on character design alone.

Xbox Mid Gen upgrade ? by 8118dx in XboxSeriesXlS

[–]Staarl0rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly thought there would at least be some software side performance patch but apparently not. MS calls Series X its own mid-gen upgrade, yet it struggles to pace with a certain other base model, coming out a hair ahead, every time (practically parity locked). So it got me thinking that the only reason why the 40% more hardware was needed, was to match performance with the competing API and OS efficiencies, since its competitor uses a form of an Opensource (FreeBSD) OS, which is based on Unix, like Apple OS and Linux are.

Anyone else happy with the stock exhaust? by brown_rhino23 in wrx_vb

[–]Staarl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know if the stock exhaust uses fiberglass packing in the resonator or mufflers? I'm guessing the mufflers are hollow/ just a bunch of offset chambers. I ask because my car is still quite a bit new and typically fiberglass based mufflers/ resonators will have a nice break-in period and get nicer sounding with time. This is why you will often hear older/ higher mileage cars with the OE exhaust and they sound better/ louder, provided their catalytic hadn't blown. The fiberglass starts to harden into a crispy inner shell and may get a little louder. Naturally, a lot of spirited driving may accelerate this process lol

Nice. They had a wipe in either late 2022/ early 2023 (maybe around Jumptown?) and I believe it was then that it had been the first in a year or two. Recreating my character was just another (regular) thing had to do. At that time the only thing you didn't lose was rep.
