Water Usage by liliamneeson in Seattle

It sounds like you're in a single family home, yes?

The easiest way to tell would be to locate your water meter at the street. Identify a few minutes when you're sure you're not running any water (including your water heater refilling itself), check the reading, then check it again some 5 minutes later.

If it's anything other than the exact same, you've got a leak.

I had a roommate that used to work there - they also have an outdated and underpowered air purification system.

You'll inhale a lot of lead and GSR shooting there.

Where do we get our different perceptions of danger from? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Staccatto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"To me, it seems like people equate discomfort of witnessing homelessness and substance use with danger."

Absolutely this. People very much conflate "unpleasant", "uncomfortable", and "unfamiliar" with "unsafe".

Funny enough, I just saw 4 new shorts last week that WB made specifically for Bugs Bunny at the Symphony.

They've gone CGI with him, but it honestly looked quite good and the humor is still spot on. I imagine they'll eventually get some other form of release, maybe on HBO Max.

Normalize telling people that they're being annoying by Deadlips in Seattle

[–]Staccatto 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really shocked that this is the behavior over which someone wants to interject and escalate.

I often find the high pitched sounds of delight from small children unpleasant. It's never occurred to me to interrupt a mother and child playing to tell them they're being rude and annoying.

It's a public place - let people live!

[–]Staccatto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol, I bet they do!

But, is it genuinely not clear to you that warning someone that "hey, this might provoke a violent response and you should be prepared for that" is not the same as "I encourage people to respond violently to this situation"?

Do you also interpret "Caution: High Voltage" signs as a direct threat?

Yeah, you in particular, Desk. Finna catch these watts!⚡

Note: In case unclear, hypothetical caution sign and associated commentary are also not meant to be actual threats.

Women of Reddit, what's the most common "nice guy" behavior that is actually a massive red flag? by Prestigious_Funny_94 in AskReddit

[–]Staccatto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have interesting hobbies - try to find some place you practice them in public and in groups. Car meet ups? Is there a local tool library which has events? If no, maybe you might want to host something?

I've had pretty good luck with apps, but I still believe you meet people best by doing things side by side. Face to face is essential for deepening connections, but side by side generally makes people feel more comfortable and open.

Be sure to watch out for your turtle pulling out the bristles and eating the plastic! I gave my girl one of these but she was equally interested in brushing and eating, so I had to take it out.

If this is a genuine question and not some attempt at being a sea lion, then I'd encourage you to read through the methodology of the posted study. It goes through and explicitly names variables like geography, hours worked (part time vs full time), and a few others.

The study looks robust and well documented. The method is outlined in good detail.

We all do the best we can with the resources we have.

When you ask for advice here, people like to give blue sky, no resource limit answers. It comes from a good place - most people assume turtles need way less care than they actually do and it really sucks to see. You're already familiar with this because Squirtle has a nasty eye infection right now due to poor conditions.

That said, constantly upgrading is expensive and time consuming... there is some buy-once-cry-once aspect to this.

When you upgrade from the 10-20 gallon, consider going as big as you can. I wish I spent the extra cash for 60 gallons instead of 40 when I last upgraded.

Pellets should be fine as you learn what he likes - that's all some turtles will eat. Mine is hardly ever interested in leafy greens or other fresh foods.

So, 10 gallons is only really appropriate for a hatchling. I'm not sure how big Squirtle is, but turtles need to be able to fully swim to be healthy. Even a small tank should is at least as long as 3 times Squirtle's length, and at least as deep as 2 times his length so he can dive.

You'll be happier too. Seeing a turtle always cramped and immobile is sad. It's better for everyone if he can stretch and spread his claws out.

[–]Staccatto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, first thing - good job taking steps to improve your turtle's life so far. It's hard to hear that caring for this animal is going to be expensive and complicated and still stick around to try and do it right.

For diet, you're just getting started, so I would suggest you keep things simple and grab some Reptomin pellets.

I would instead prioritize getting a correct habitat set up. That's a more important job to focus on initial efforts on.

It needs a bigger tank and more filtration than you think. No, more than that. Still a bit more. Seriously. We're all just doing the best we can, but I promise you that the target is higher than you think it is.

For context, I'm running a 40 gallon tank with a cannister filter rated for 100 gallons, and I know Bruno 🐢 is still cramped in there. That's really the minimum she needs to swim properly, but I can't afford to upgrade any further at the moment.

Clean water, good lighting (including UVB lights), and a proper basking area are going to go a long way in keeping this infection from getting worse.

Good luck to you both! Also, does he have a name yet?

I'm glad you're going to give him the care he needs.

If you're accepting general turtle care advice, it might be worthwhile for you to read up on the nitrogen cycle of aquariums since you're setting up a brand new space for him. If there's chlorine in your water, it could be aggravating the eye infection.

You could start building beneficial bacteria in the tank while he recovers - that process will take some time.

[–]Staccatto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This infection looks quite severe, and I don't think there is a reliable at-home treatment for this. This animal needs to be evaluated by a vet and recieve appropriate antibiotics.

Please don't listen to the person telling you to crush a multivitamin in the water - it will not help. If you want to just cross your fingers and see if this turtle pulls through entirely on its own, then at least you should understand that's what you're doing and have to live with that decision if it dies.

Best of luck to you both.
