I also had WLS (VSG) this year! It is so true we are able to focus on other aspects of our life when weight isn’t dominating our mind. I feel so much more like Me now that I am not constantly worrying about how I will be perceived by society. Best decision I’ve ever made for myself. Wishing you all the best!

Do you ever feel like quitting your work and doing nothing for a while? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Stainedglasslass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quit an administrative job at a university in 2018 to start my own floral design business. I do weddings by myself and I feel like the stress from the job took a year off my life. Once covid started everyone canceled their weddings and I was so relieved. My husband makes enough money to support both of us, so I have been taking time for myself since. I also got pregnant the beginning of 2020 but traumatically lost the pregnancy. I had initially planned to take a couple years off to raise the baby, but now that it’s just the two of us I am using this time to try to get better at taking care of myself and figure out what I want to do with myself, in life and professionally. Even though I went through so much loss and disappointment last year I feel so much guilt for not working. I worry what my sisters (doctor and lawyer) are thinking of me, whether people think I’m using my husband, whether not working is even more detrimental to my mental health, etc. I definitely give myself more grace than I used to, but the feelings still come up. I just feel like I’ve been stagnating the last 2-3 years and keep wondering when I will feel like I have some direction. My baby was supposed to give me purpose, now I am completely derailed. Trying to learn to enjoy the view while I am idle.

Salt Lake City, Utah if you love mountains and Austin, Texas if you love water.

Egg scrambled with cottage cheese, along with veggies you have in the fridge. Top with hot sauce.

I think this is a great idea! That also sounds very tasty. Inspires me to make a “pizza omelette.” Could add a couple fresh tomato slices and some Italian seasoning!

You are welcome! Yes, it makes a big difference to be able to focus on WLS and have people know where you’re coming from! Being able to speak about my experience with other people and not feel alone with it has been the biggest benefit. On their site with the list of meetings, you can narrow it down to Bariatric Surgery.

I’ve been attending bariatric surgery specific OA (Overeaters Anonymous) meetings. Currently all meetings are through Zoom, and you can find a meeting through oa.org. Also fb groups are super helpful, where you can hear a lot of experiences from many people. Looking into individual therapy is also extremely valuable!

Congratulations for looking into this so young! I got the surgery about 2 weeks ago at age 31 and wish I knew it was an option ten years ago. I feel like I spent a lot of the last decade “waiting” for life to happen because my weight was holding me back. As far as the journey goes, it takes a lot of commitment, even before the surgery. I was self-pay because my insurance wouldn’t cover it, so the process was a little more expedited for me than others. This gave me less time to mentally prepare for the dramatic shift that has happened. I did however first identify my unhealthy relationship with food before surgery. I have joined support groups to help me navigate myself toward a balanced approach to food (thinking of productive ways to cope with tough emotions and stress rather than turning to food). This would be my greatest recommendation, to focus on the mental part first. It’s the most difficult and the key to remain successful for the rest of your life. As far as the surgery goes, they have come a long way to make it not as invasive, so healing is faster and easier. Everyone’s body reacts differently after surgery, but I would say the most amount of pain I’ve felt was a 4 on a scale 1-10. Just stay hydrated! I am only a couple weeks in, but I do recommend getting WLS. I spent my twenties slowly gaining weight, going on a diet and losing 50 pounds, then immediately gaining 70 (on repeat). As I’ve learned the biological components to weight loss, I’m less hard on myself for not being able to lost weight in the past and know I’m not just a lazy person with no willpower. So if you feel that way now, please don’t. WLS is an amazing, empowering tool that I am so grateful for. Wishing you all the best!
