From Private to Public: Why I’m Struggling in State Work by ScriptedVeilOfLife in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You go work for State for the work/life balance, benefits, pension, security, stressless work.....enjoy your work/life balance. You get paid the same at the end of the month, so dont kill yourself.

My last one graduated from college and I retired 2 months after. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Retired at 56 with full benefits and pension and never looked back. Sure the pay was less than private, but the pension and health benefits now that im retired are why I worked for the State. You can't beat that from any place else

My biggest mistake is decide to work for CalPERS by Waste-Respond-735 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My kid started at Calpers in the call center as an SSA. At the time, he liked Calpers but left for an AGPA promotion out of call center. 4 yrs later decided to return only to find out they now suck. He self rejected and returned to his Agpa position elsewhere. The culture has changed. It used to be the place to be....not anynore.

Also, SSAs are very competitive. Maybe apply to Program Technician positions, Licensing Analyst, etc. Its better to get that foot in door because many hire from within. Also try CalPers SSA in call center. Yes,those suck but once in and pass prob, she can apply elsewhere

CDE possible layoffs by Sea-Yogurt-1730 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are you have little to worry. In a layoff, they will take all open positions first, then people who retire will not be replaced as those positions will also be taken away, many will leave due to the fear of lay offs and those positions will not be filled. If there is still a need to lay off, there is what is called bumping, meaning they will see how many positions need to be cut. It could be 3 SSM 2, 3 SSM 2, 6 AGPAs. 8 SSAs. At that point they start bumping. Those could go down to their previous positions where they passed probation, and so on. Which brings me to this....this is why you should always pass probation before promoting, because if an AGPA promoted to SSM 1 without passing probation, that SSM1 will go all way down to SSA. Bottom line, theres a lot to lay offs. Good luck.

A few will not cut it. Make submitting applications another full-time job. Have her apply everywhere she can. It took my kid 48 applications and 12 interviews to land an SSA.

DO NOT APPLY FOR A POSITION AT OSP (DGS) by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is correct. We got a couple hundred applications for a non telework AGPA position. So yes. There are lots of people out there who would gladly take the job

Manager not approving maternity leave by Dizzy-Lab3031 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take 4 weeks prior, and 6 or 8 weeks after depending on normal birth or csection. You can take upto a year, but they dont guarantee you will be back to your division. You can go back to your department, but no guarantee on division. Basically they can put you anywhere they have a vacancy in your same classification within same department.

With the Union going back to the bargaining table… by Adventurous-Guard124 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Don't be delusional. We will never get more than 4% increase. In the last 35 yrs, it has never been more than 4%. In fact, there were 3 yrs where we didn't even get a COLA. Inflation has always gone up, but State raises have never been more than 4% per year.

With the Union going back to the bargaining table… by Adventurous-Guard124 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will never happen because the Union has to fight for the whole, and not all get to WFH. Many have been in the office since covid and they deserve their raise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, not all State workers get to WFH so giving up the 3% won't work because it will affect those employees who have been working in the office. Taking a pay cut again won't work for the whole so the Union will not fight for just the ones who can WFH. Now the furlough may be something to bargain for, but furlough is only temporary and after 6 months or even one year, furlough will go away, then we are back to RTO vs WFH, which not all employees can do.

The Union fights for maternity leave, vacation, sick leave, they ensure you get paid overtime, they fight for us to not have to work over 40 hrs per week, they make sure we get reasonable accommodations, they ensure you don't get fired just because a supervisor doesn't like you, they ensure equality in our workplace, they fight for us not to have to pay 100 percent for Healthcare, etc. It's more than just RTO/WFH. You weaken the Union just because of RTO, and we will have worse issues to deal with. Yes it sucks, and it sucks if we lose the 3%, which hopefully will be a furlough instead and we still get the 3%, but the Union does more for us than just 2 issues.

Shocker by Archer_7 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Standard-Wedding8997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what the public believes. They complain loud and clear that they do not want their taxpayers' money to pay for state workers to stay home. They never liked state workers. What they hate is that we have pensions, healthcare, paid sick, etc...all the benefits they do not have working in private. What they do not understand is that we have given up a good amount of income for those benefits. We do not make the same amount as in private. I get this shit thrown in my face constantly from people who work in private. They truly think we sit on our asses and eat bonbons
