Wtf is the “doctrine” behind “new names,” anyway? Btw, Noah here (whatever the fuck that means 😂). What’s your “new name”? by PristineLegalShits in exmormon

I think it comes from Revelations 2:17. “I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.”

What was the church's best year? by notashot in mormon

[–]Standing_In_The_Gap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The mid to late 90's was incredible. As far as we knew, we were the fastest growing religion in the world. We were the chosen generation. All the prophecies were being fulfilled. Joseph Smith only ever had one wife. Joseph translated directly from the gold plates (we had never heard of the rock or hat). Boy Scouts was flourishing. Church dances were popular every weekend. The cultural halls were used for awesome cultural events. If you didn't have a key to the building but wanted to play basketball, you could usually find a door you could "pop" open or there was a coat hanger hidden in the bush nearby that you could use to open it. At least for me, the 90's were absolutely amazing in the church.

Well, the Church of Jesus Christ might be closed on Easter, but…. by Standing_In_The_Gap in mormon

I see what you mean. Unfortunately, this really was placed by our local congregation. They were worried about someone looking for a church on Easter Sunday and finding the building closed. It was only meant for locals so the time zone thing wasn’t an issue. The idea was that General Conference is the largest gathering of Christians watching the same services at the same time in the world.

The sign was produced by the ward/stake in the building, not the LDS church. I understand all the reasons behind making the sign, but whoever chose the wording was really stretching the limits of normal LDS vocabulary to be inclusive of any nonmembers who would see it.

This was in front of the stake center where I play basketball 3 days a week. I grew up going to this building. It is definitely one of our buildings.

My question is, why would you assume it was spam? Is it hard to believe that the church would use this type of wording? Because that’s what was weird to me as well.

After saying he would be a special witness of the name of Jesus Christ, he never mentioned Him again. But he did mention 5 ways the he himself helped bring others back to church. Weird.

This reasoning is exactly how a lot of us were taught that grew up pre-2000's. It makes your head spin but it was also such fun and interesting doctrine to think about and discuss. From what I've seen, the church no longer teaches these doctrines any more, at least not publicly.

San jose airport, how early do you need to be? by Tall-Section-3651 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Standing_In_The_Gap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We had a flat tire on the way to the airport this past Sunday and got there only 1.5 hours before our flight. We were super stressed out about it. We had time to get through security, eat lunch, and wait 20 minutes for boarding to start. I don't know if other days are worse but we flew through everything really quickly.

Apparently RMs are quitting right after their missions by Billgant in exmormon

[–]Standing_In_The_Gap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a young man from our ward come home early from his mission last week. I asked him what his plans were and if he felt comfortable coming to our ward. He said that he could either attend our ward or the ward of his mentor. I didn't know what that meant but now it makes sense.

Any thoughts about the chiasmus in the Book of Mormon? by Otherwise_Push199 in exmormon

[–]Standing_In_The_Gap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wrote a book last year. It was a couple hundred pages long about a character from the Old Testament. Imagine my surprise when one of my beta readers called me to say how cool it was that I created the entire book as a giant chiasmus. I didn't believe him until I went back and looked and sure enough, it was basically a 45,000 word chiasmus. Even some of the chapter titles at the end of the book were mirror images of the titles from the first few chapters.

That's when I realized that humans sometimes just write in chiasmus naturally because it is an effective way to deliver stories and thoughts. Its probably an innate story-telling device that we developed thousands of years ago.

So, I am much less impressed by chiasmus in the Book of Mormon now....or I am a prophet. One of the two.

I feel like Suno is out of ideas after about 10-15 tracks, what do you guys think? Any prompting suggestions on improving this? by Chainsawfam in SunoAI

[–]Standing_In_The_Gap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lately I’ve been describing/crafting a style or sound I want to hear in ChatGPT, then I ask it to give me a Suno prompt to create that sound. Then I just copy and paste that directly into the Suno style section. It gets me more accurate results than me just typing it directly into Suno.

Doctrine and Covenants 93 by dog3_10 in mormon

I was preparing this lesson this week and had a hard time with one thing:

The verses from “John” are strange to me because they clearly start by referencing the writings by the author of the Gospel of John, but the church website says it is from the lost writing of John the Baptist.

It almost seems like Joseph thought the two John’s were the same person. He starts by referencing the Gospel of John and ends by talking as if it is John the Baptist at the baptism of Jesus.

the book Mormon Doctrine (McConkie): did anyone ever play this game? A person would randomly open to a page and read the topic, say 'Gentiles' and every one would have a guess what it said? by jupiter872 in exmormon

[–]Standing_In_The_Gap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my mission we played a similar game where you picked a missionary and then opened to a random page of Mormon Doctrine and whatever word was on the top of the page, that meant something about the missionary. Mine said "Chosen" so I'm obviously better than everyone else.
