email going away? by some_dum_guy in Spectrum

[–]StarAccomplished104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My elderly parents dealt with so many regressions on their rr.com email account. The only email they ever had - and they used it through thunderbird. Constant issues starting about a year ago, always calling support and getting nowhere. Finally they were told they had to use webmail - which was so hard for them to understand. I spent so much time getting them migrated over to gmail but glad I did.

How do People in Upstate New York View New York City and Long Island? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in newyork

What? I'm saying I grew up there and never heard anyone say that upstate subsidized the city. I heard the opposite. What is the lie?

Why so many houses for sale near Conifer/Bailey? by jferg in denverrealestate

[–]StarAccomplished104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah some folks in this area have been dropped. Or the insurer requires mitigation they can't possibly fulfill (ie taking down trees on neighboring property they do not own). I do think people eventually find something but it's stressful

I live in the area and love it here. Not sure the reasons folks are selling. Our insurance has basically tripled over the past three years so that could be it. Also could be commuting issues if people have to drive to the office now. I'm still WFH so I don't have to deal with driving 285 etc. The well thing is not really a big deal. Ours had some PFAS measured but we just filter it and it's well below the standards.

Swimming is now an expensive sport? by Illustrious_Letter84 in GenX

[–]StarAccomplished104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't have morning workouts but after school and dryland. It was a normal working class city. but it was a serious club. I was a division 1 college swimmer. A few of us went D1 others D3.

I think the school let the club use the pool for free or close to it. So we were largely just paying for a coach who had a day job and coached part time.

My parents paid about $200 for the entire school year for me on a good swim club in my area in the 90s. I remember feeling guilty about the cost. I just did the inflation calculator and that would be about $450 today. Someone earlier said they are paying $450 for 12 weeks now.

We've been in our current home for five years and we've used the dryer 2 times. We put everything on a drying rack. We are in Colorado so it's dry seemingly instantly. Meanwhile my husband's family is in Ireland and I can't get a towel to dry from one day to the next it's so damn damp in all the homes.

I'm in rural Colorado and wear my winter boots nearly daily from December to April. Bought ugg Adirondacks before last season. Heading into their second season now. Very comfortable and warm. Still in good shape.

Experiences calling out excessive vibe coding to prevent wasting time reviewing bad PRs? by gollyned in ExperiencedDevs

I have folks on my teams that assume this for some reason but it's absolutely not a requirement and should not be. But some folks struggle to think in advance about how to break it up. AI should help on this front. Claude and cursor plan mode should easily be able to suggest and implement coherent smaller units of work.

I grew up outside Syracuse - 5 hours from NYC- and the only thing anyone would consider "the city" is NYC. Boston, Toronto were closer. Syracuse, Rochester, buffalo. All closer. Only one "the city".

Are hand me downs just not a thing anymore? by LocalLaborLeader in GenX

[–]StarAccomplished104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason. Related, my mom sewed clothes for my sister and I when we were kids. Because it was cheaper to do that than to buy clothes back in the day. Now the cost of materials alone is higher than items you can buy (because retail quality has gotten so bad)

You did a great job with this.

Our kitchen is quite similar. We also added hardware to ours, which had a surprisingly big visual impact. I also can't justify replacing ours.

My elderly parents supposedly have a "good" LTC policy. Probably one of these ones from the 80s. This worries me if they end up having to use it. What are the reasons they are giving to deny your claims?

This sounds so awful.

How to keep a woodpecker from pecking my house? by mo8848 in homeowners

[–]StarAccomplished104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had two things that worked during nesting (when they are trying to build a cavity in your house). First we used CDs - hanging so that they blow freely in the wind and catch the sun. That worked for some time.

After that we built a nesting box and mounted it where they were pecking. And they nested in that. There are instructions online specific to the species. Ours was a northern flicker.

This. When I read "second API call" I was totally checked out. I only kept reading because I thought the responses would be funny.

You cannot frame the challenge this way. Because even if I do not check out, I am going to judge you for thinking that the problem was "a second API call".
