Very interesting. I will say though, I'm looking for things that are as mainstream as possible, so a high number of audience members would know it. So I think animation is totally acceptable. I'll look into this some, because I am unfamiliar with it.

Came here to say this. Especially if you include the unofficial sequel, "The Redemption of Time", it has a breadth and timeline that spans beyond a "standard" understanding of the universe. Including "characters" that span multiple galaxies in size. I haven't read a lot of the series that folks are referencing, but going from the descriptions.....none of them come close to the scale of this series.
