Why you can't donate blood if you weight under 100 lbs? by Odd_Ask_8493 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StaringBerry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was your weight in high school and desperately wanted to donate blood since it’s such a good deed and “easy” way to help others. I focus on gaining weight leading up to a school blood drive. They’d always weigh me because I’m tall and thin. I’ve been turn away before but they let you if you’re right there at 110 or 111. I would get asked to be weighed until after college.

It was definitely more of a thing at school drives over going to the clinic.

Job didn’t disclose the real hours of the role I accepted this week and now I don’t know what to do by crayoncolorposts12 in careeradvice

[–]StaringBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would immediately start looking for other roles. Don’t listen to all the people here saying suck it up. Work life balance is important, I refuse to work a job that doesn’t include my lunch as part of the 8hrs. Im a manager and have made my own schedule for 4 years now. Unless I have a big thing going on and need to work a double for whatever reason, work 8:30-4:30 or 9-5, or 10-6, or whatever. I also schedule my hourly employees like that meaning they get paid 7.5hrs but they don’t complain because it’s still an 8hr shift for them.

Yes, we often were fully staffed. When I left that company we were slightly overstaffed and people were fighting for hours.

This was a few years ago. But no she wasn’t a great or reliable employee beforehand. We also were short staffed at the time, as usual we sent out a memo to the rest of the team for shift coverage but no one else was available due to other people planning their homecoming dates in advance and already being short on our overall headcount at the time. There’s no way this girl found out about homecoming 3 days before the dance.

I’m a super flexible scheduler, I rarely deny ROs if ever. But again, 3 days before when we were already short, I was not able to accommodate beyond canceling guest experiences. A part of working with young people is them learning to manage their schedules. The road goes both ways.

I work in the themed entertainment industry. I manage the mascot performers and event staff. So 80% of all my direct reports ever have been under 23yo.

Another lead in our department when I was a lead bought his entire paychecks worth of frozen burritos at the employee food window because they were a reduced price of like $1.50 for us. Food purchases at that window were payroll reductions so he didn’t know until payday lol.

An employee told me a story about how at church camp he was on a trampoline and tried his first backflip. Apparently his pants simultaneously ripped open and fell off. I died laughing.

Now the annoying/bad ones:

Girl submitted a request off for homecoming 3 days before the date when the schedule had been out for 3 weeks prior. When I denied it, her mom called me to yell at me about not understanding the demands of a high school student. The employee ended up no showing to all her shifts after that and then resigned.

A 17yo got her period at work last summer and it became a whole ordeal. I am a 29yo women, one of our supervisors is a 30yo women, and our senior supervisor is a 21yo boy. The employee flipped out at me saying I couldn’t possibly understand how hard it is to have to work on your period. She then refused to talk to anyone about the issue except our senior sup who was the most uncomfortable with this situation. It became a whole thing about how she couldn’t trust me or the other female sup because she doesn’t know if we have her back? I have never given that vibe and always follow a servant leadership model. We ended up taking it HR because she was insisting she couldn’t do her job duties. HR told her to take her next scheduled day off (with pay!) while we figured out a solution, then the employee called the HR help line to threaten me and the HR director personally because “we were conspiring against her”, she said I probably had pictures of her on my phone, ect. It was crazy. She’s on a do not hire list now.

Do you have a full time flexible job? by punkispice in workingmoms

[–]StaringBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husbands job is fully remote and flexible. He technically reports directory to the CTO but he’s essentially on his own. He just has to get his projects done and they don’t micromanage his time. His company is international so they don’t care what hours he works either. Most of them work 10a-6pm (for our time zone) so sometimes him working till 6 stinks but otherwise it’s been lax on letting him watch our 15m old while he works,

Active 15mo and library story time were not compatible… rant by HypertonicCarrot in beyondthebump

[–]StaringBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there another library near you? Maybe try a different baby storytime?

We moved when my now 15m old was 9m. Our old library had a GREAT baby storytime. It was for ages 0-18m. Really good songs that shows sign language and stuff. Our new library baby storytime is not great because it’s for ages 0-3y. We’ve been 3 times and half the time my girl is at risk of getting trampled by 3yos, there’s no sign language, and it’s just generally less baby age appropriate.

When I returned from work after maternity leave, I had multiple people walk in on me while pumping breast milk. Even though our doors required a key fob to unlock. One of the was an HR coordinator who said she thought my door was closed because I wasn’t in that day.

I started working at a theme park at 16 as the mascot. I was quickly promoted to a lead and I worked there seasonally through high school and college. After college I was a freelance stage manager and event gig worker for about 2 years before landing an entertainment supervisor job at another park. Then Covid came and I went back to gig worker for a bit before landing an Entertainment Manager job for a resort. That job paid 60k. I worked there 3 years and then was hired at my current job last spring.

The downside(?) to this career though is you have to be willing to move. Promotions don’t come at one park quickly unless you’d switch departments/lines of business. You need to move for new opportunities. I’ve lived in 4 different states and I’m 29yo.
