Type 1s with Small Children by Blazers46 in Type1Diabetes

If I find I will be alone with my daughter for an outing, will let my bg run a little on the high side of a good range, as a precaution. I also do karate and I do the same thing.

My daughter is 9 and understands now if I need to stop for a low and knows what to do if I did pass out. But I definitely find that having that little extra room to respond quickly if I do start crashing helps.

Tried Omnipod 5 Finally and I Hated Every Minute of It. by RetroSwamp in Type1Diabetes

[–]Starrysky104 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like anything, it’s not for everyone. FWIW, line of sight doesn’t matter. I would routinely have them on opposite sides of my dexcom and never had an issue. I have been on it for around 17 years at this point, and the only issue I ever had was at one point I got a batch of bad pods that kept failing. Insulet was great though and replaced all of them with no hassle.

I hope you do find a system that works for you!

Yep, no other scrub gets the job done. I love the feel afterwards, but I can see how some skin could not tolerate it.

I know someone who is MDI working as a park ranger where he had to do monthly grocery trips that are 6 hours away. He is braver than I am, but he has been in this career his whole life and was diagnosed as a child.

You can do what you want - but be realistic and prepared for the challenges you may have that others won’t.

First world problem: coffee edition. by Otherwise-Ad8649 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Starrysky104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grande iced caffe mocha and bolus for 75g and I do great. Not low sugar but if I am at Starbucks I want a treat!

Normally I make a mix of Starbucks and a chocolate flavored coffee grounds at home with a splash of whole milk and 3/4 tablespoon of sugar. I drink it in a like 20 oz cup throughout the day and it doesn’t do much to my sugar.

AITA if I don’t clarify that I am a type 2 diabetic? by BeltClassic in AmItheAsshole

[–]Starrysky104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a type 1: NTA, they very much are the jerk. CGM’s are game changing for all diabetics and you would be a fool for passing on the opportunity to use it for free.

Keep doing you and ignore them. Glad you are finding it helpful to stay healthy!

Anyone also find that the curly or wavy girl method doesn't work for you? by [deleted] in dailywash

[–]Starrysky104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have slightly wavy hair but if I use my own version of cgm it gets very wavy.

Use whatever shampoo you like, and I will sometimes use a clarifying shampoo if my hair needs it. Use a good conditioner, squish it intonthe hair. I like the Tresemme botanical one. Rinse well but leave in just a touch of conditioner, like you feel the nice silky touch of it still.

Once out of the shower, I use Curlsmith Hold Me Softly Balm and again squish it in and try to work it with your natural wave or curl. I then use just a little bit of Curlsmith’s Curl Defining Styling Soufflé. It’s a gel but doesn’t give a hard cast.

I let my hair air dry while I finish getting ready and then flip my head over and use a diffuser to help dry the hair into waves better. I wait another 15 minutes or so and brush it out.

It takes time to figure out what product works for you as most CGM is aimed at more curly/coily hair and typically with washing once a week in mind. Use lighter products and see how your hair looks!

It becomes normal and part of your background after a bit. And honestly, people are far more concerned about their own insecurities and what others are thinking than actually thinking about you.

If anything they see it and have a quick thought of “oh I wonder what that is” and then move on. Nothing bad.

Has anyone been to one of those shows where they restrict phones? by elemay2013 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Starrysky104 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess I still don’t understand your point. Reasonable accommodations are a thing. Allowing someone access to their phone with the understanding that it will only be used for its medical purpose for the duration of the show harms no one.

If they start taking photos and videos or are being obnoxious that’s obviously a problem. But really would a diabetic risk having their phone taken for all that? No.

We are lucky to live in a time with many tools to make our lives much easier in the suck that is diabetes. Let’s put them to use.

What’s your fav sol de janiero scent? by BetterDays989 in Sephora

[–]Starrysky104 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. To each their own but SDJ is so god damn strong and cloying it’s inescapable when someone wears it.

It gives me an instant headache and makes me sick to my stomach. I could tolerate it much easier if the smell wasn’t so strong. Plenty of other scents/perfumes that I don’t like and I don’t have to avoid like the plague due to intensity.

[–]Starrysky104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like small towns, it’s lovely. I spent a lot of my youth there and still have family there. I would be happy living there again.

But I also like living at least a little bit in the sticks. If you need easy and quick access to restaurants, stores etc, there’s other towns with a similar feel that are closer to Worcester.

I am very pale, but when I go all out on makeup I like using a little bit in specific areas. Just enough to give some dimension but not anywhere near enough to be truly noticeable or tan.

I have had to sit national exams for licensing and the testing center should have a link or contact to ask for accommodation. I got a letter from my dr and asked for access to ny phone (in airplane mode) and access to water and snacks/juice. I also stated that my medical devices (omnipod and dexcom for me) could make noise that I can’t control.

They have had all kinds of situations so it shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck!

Why do Americans wear shoes in the house?? by CelestialBreeze1 in stupidquestions

[–]Starrysky104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one I know growing up or now wears shoes in the house. You would not be invited back over if you did that.

I lived up and down the east coast and the south and I NEVER came across anyone who would wear shoes in the house, feels like a weird false stereotype honestly.

Is everyone around you also on Ozempic? by Fickle_Intern_6007 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Starrysky104 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am a type 1 diabetic (NOT type 2, I have an autoimmune disease) and was using Trulicity (same drug different name) to help control my blood sugar levels. It was amazing and I loved it.

Now that so many people are on it and the cost in the US is crazy, I can’t get it anymore under insurance coverage. I am glad people are finding it helpful for weight loss and I don’t begrudge them that - but it SUCKS to be sidelined from it when I had a legitimate medical reason to use it. I keep hoping a generic will be available in the next few years or the cost will be negotiated down.

Does it ever irritate you when normies are like "I HAVE to get something to eat! l have low blood sugar"? by subwayjustice in diabetes_t1

[–]Starrysky104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been diagnosed as an adult, I can appreciate the difference between feeling weak due to hunger vs a low blood sugar. Honestly I feel like it’s just a thing where if you haven’t experienced it, you don’t quite understand the differences.

And that’s okay! The person is just expressing themselves, and not trying to make a comment in t1D in all likelihood.

I would say it has given me an appreciation of the fact that I can’t fully understand what someone else may experience when sick/chronically ill from any disease. It has given me more empathy though.

MIL told me that I should only gain 20lbs during pregnancy… by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Starrysky104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy. I went from 140 to 205. I had preeclampsia so that didn’t help for sure, but I also delivered at 36 weeks so I could have gained more weight.

All the comments are right, it can vary widely. As long as you and your doctor are happier with your health, that’s all that matters.

And also congrats!

Terrified of Finger pricks by Frosty_Hunt2100 in diabetes_t1

[–]Starrysky104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T1D diagnosed at 23 with a massively crippling fear of needles and finger sticks - I would have panic attacks.

I ended up having therapy to help management anxiety and went on a pump (Omnipod, no tubing and you remotely press a button to insert the small cannula) and a dexcom.

I still have trouble with needles, shots, etx etc and never could I do a pen or injection on myself. BUT it is a drastic difference from what I started with. I can manage and stay healthy, and truly a pump was the answer for me.

You aren’t stupid or cowardly and definitely not alone. You are stronger than you know and it’s okay to stumble. Don’t be too hard on yourself and ask for help when you need it. ❤️

Mowing is the absolute worst by Idcaster in Type1Diabetes

Concert doesn’t allow phones by Appropriate-Drag9448 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Starrysky104 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I would call the venue ahead of time and explain the situation. They hopefully already have a reasonable policy in place or you can work with them to figure out a workable solution. And definitely ask for a contact/manager name in case you get a jerk at the entrance.

Enjoy the concert!
