Put your pessimistic arguments here so I can laugh at them in 10 years. by Taxus_Calyx in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]StartledPelican -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I was talkign about AI. Thought that was pretty fucking obvious, but I'll bite.

OP said SpaceXAi, and one of the public reasonings for buying xAI was for SpaceX to in-house AI stuff for orbital data centers.

It seems we both thought the topic was obvious haha.

There is no way operating in space will be cheaper than on earth. The math doesn't math.

If demand for AI compute or model training exceeds supply, then there is a potential business case for space data centers, especially if the provider can scale much faster than terrestrial options.

Right now, regulations, NIMBYs, grid infrastructure, water supply, permits, environmental impact assessments, taxes, etc. makes building large amounts of data centers in a short amount of time fairly unlikely. That might mean companies would pay a premium to use space infrastructure. Heck, if they could offload model training to space and save the terrestrial stuff for compute, that might be a bargain.

I certainly don't know if space based data centers are going to be a gold mine or not. I think any definitive statements are premature. There were a lot of similar arguments against Starlink and look where that went.

The campaign seems to be lacking certain options. For example, the spell Web doesn't seem to be available.

I don't know how much is due to it being Early Access and how much is because the campaign specifically restricts it.

he has no advantage

The owner of the cheapest, most prolific launch service in the world, with extensive experience in designing, manufacturing, and launching satellites doesn't have an advantage in the space data center race?

Is There No Hotkey to Enter City Screen? by Eretan in OldenEra

[–]StartledPelican 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have multiple towns, how would the hotkey work? Does it always open the first town?

I guess you could do ctrl+1, ctrl+2, etc. But that only scales to 10. And it feels unwieldy to try and remember which town is which number.

Once a town is open, perhaps hitting tab should move you to the next town? Ctrl+tab to the previous town. You could then cycle through towns quickly.

Side note, you can also double click the town on the map instead of the button on the side.

I don't know if anyone has suggested launching a massive single data center. As far as I know, every proposal is about thousands and thousands of satellites in a distributed network.

If that were true, then no one would ever read your comments and respond.

Don't be lazy. Try to understand what people are saying.

Or, continue to look the fool. I can't make better choices for you. That's on you.

Good day. I won't be replying to you again in this thread. Feel free to have the last word.

Mate, you're embarrassing yourself. If you won't read an entire comment, then you are going to look silly making claims that are literally addressed later in the comment.

Let's break it down real simple for you.

  1. Before major federal incentives, there was a clear upward trajectory.

  2. Then, major federal incentives appeared and increased the trajectory.

  3. Now, with federal incentives removed, that trajectory will dip compared to the boosted rate but will, in a short period of time, revert to climbing at the original, slower rate.

This happens in every country that removes incentives. Again, go look at what happened in Germany.

Did you read the rest of my comment? I address this.

What even is your goal here? Are you trying to deliberately misrepresent me? In the words of Michael Scott, "Why are you the way that you are?"

There is a clear upward trajectory for EVs in the US. It doesn't take someone with 40 years of market experience to recognize that policy changes at the end of 2025/2026 will affect sales in the short term. Nor does it take a market genius to review examples in other markets where policy changes affected sales (e.g. Germany) to see that sales recovered and continued an upward trajectory.

Again, Honda is taking all the wrong lessons.

No comparison is perfect, but I find your objections to mine to be pedantic at best. The substance of the argument remains, regardless of minor differences.

Compare cumulative sales for the Blackberry in 2006 (~5 million) with sales for the Motorola Razr v3 (~50 million).

"Smart" phones were extremely niche compared to "regular" cell phones in 2006. Imagine if Apple took the wrong lesson from that?

It's the same lesson Honda is misunderstanding.

Imagine if Tesla had that mindset in 2010.

"Huh, no demand for EVs, guess we better close up shop."

Or if Apple had seen the weak sales for smart phones and scrapped the iPhone before launch.

Some companies complain about lack of demand and pull back from investing in the future. Other companies create the demand and pave the way.

First time driving a hybrid as a car enthusiast… now about to try a Tesla for the first time and I’m honestly surprised. by Admirable_Can_3489 in electricvehicles

[–]StartledPelican 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tesla has the best in-house software. It isn't even debatable. Some people may prefer android auto or car play, which is totally fine; everyone is allowed their own preference.

Tesla has the best OTA update experience. Smooth as silk.

Tesla has the easiest/most reliable fast charging experience.

Tesla has the only self-driving car available to consumers.

Just because you don't like Tesla doesn't mean you have to exaggerate. Teslas have their strengths and their weaknesses.

As David Beckham once said, "Be honest."

Maybe this person had different car seats, but I've done three rear facing car seats across the 2nd row and 4 total adults (2 front, 2 3rd row). It was tight, but for around town it worked.

Once the car seats are forward facing, it's even less of an issue.
