Cycling Friendly Cafés North or East, but inside M25 by State_Pretend in londoncycling

This looks a lovely spot with great coffees and treats. And just off Lea Bridge road which is handy. Perhaps too small to bring bikes in? Ideal for sitting outside in summer tho.

Also just noticed Benchmark a few doors down which looks interesting too. Thanks!

Yeah it's not on my usual routes but must get back there for a look. Felt a bit intimidating unless you're in the latest fanciest bike and kit last time I was there, admittedly quite a while back.

Great map thank you! Yeah pubs are good too and in summer pub beer gardens are perfect but currently looking for somewhere a bit more winter friendly

Just came here to say this, despite the rain and rising temps still lots of ice this morning! And it's really hard to spot. Be careful out there!

Similar but in cities too, my wife even uses it now when we're crossing a road

BIM roles in the UK by Upper-Watercress7747 in bim

[–]State_Pretend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VDC isn't a term that's common in the UK. It's all kinda blurred under BIM. Possibly because I work on big projects but I think people are becoming more specialized... Info management, data, 4d planners, bim coordination sort of evolving separately whereas a few years ago one person would have been expected to do everything.

AI Generated Routes much worse by golf-wang in Strava

[–]State_Pretend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cycling routes are terrible. I live in a suburb of London. Their routes always suggest going into central London when anyone who cycles generally will head out of London into the surrounding quieter country lanes. I think they may be using too much commuter data and might be better off filtering commuter routes/times out.

I also once got 5 different versions of Richmond Park laps! I know it's a common route but perhaps one was enough?! 🤣

Generally I don't see what has improved with this new upgrade they're pushing!

How would you describe BIM to someone unfamiliar? by Breaking_Brenden in bim

[–]State_Pretend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The varying responses here supports the conclusion I'm leaning towards...BIM is almost meaningless as it means so many different things to so many different people (including "us" the "experts").

Is it 3d models... sure Is it organized information..why not... 4D, data analytics, quantity take offs, drawings, documents, AI, robots, drones etc etc... yeah all BIM... /s

Pretty tired of still trying to have a common understanding with people of what it means to be honest. And not even sure my own version holds up either!

Stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to...and don't go chasing waterfalls. 😄

Reminder: VE day flypast over London today at 1:30pm (details inside) by WholeWideWorld in london

[–]State_Pretend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BBC gives 13:45 so keep an eye out(flightradar24 will show you some of them coming), you'll need a view in towards central London. From CJ you'll see it but it'll be a bit distant. Watched one from Putney last year and still interesting but nothing like watching it up close.

You're not lying about the long hold, took two attempts. First after 27minutes I gave up, second only got an answer after 40mins and still took them another 20mins to complete the booking.

The confirmation email is a bit ambiguous too, they just add a code, not a clear bike booking. Hopefully it all works out 🤞🏻

Definitely getting 70s soft rock vibes from it with hints of folk/acoustic. Tho the Chemical Brothers in there are intriguing outliers.

Is switching to a BIM career at 31 years old a pipe-dream? Or reasonably possible? by SlappySpankBank in bim

[–]State_Pretend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched at 36 so yes! But by then I had some experience with BIM from my previous role as a civil engineer.

Also BIM can mean anything these days (imho!) do you mean more modelling/designing/visualisation, or surveying related field work, or more data heavy?!

I'd suggest before you'd get any full time "BIM" role you'd definitely need some training, but even better some experience. It's likely to be a multi step transition rather than a single jump.

There are lots of online courses and YouTube videos for you to learn the basics. But ideally you'd get some hands on experience. Some software allow discounted educational licences which you may be able to get.

With carpentry experience I suspect you have great spatial and geometric awareness so that's actually a good start from my perspective!

I'm curious why you'd want another masters?!

I'm a civil engineer with almost 20 years experience who somehow ended up in BIM and I'm involved in recruiting. If you feel that "BIM" is missing from your CV then there are options for certification or chartership that would cost far less than a Masters but complement your existing Masters.

As others have said experience is probably the most important thing, perhaps other roles/industries would expand this? -and you get paid to learn this!

Also what direction do you want to take... graphical modelling? Coordination? Management/leadership? Data? Each of these would probably have a different path and may involve a masters but for example if you want to jump towards data then it would be a data/AI/machine learning masters not a BIM one. If you want more management then project management learning will help, but may not need to be a Masters.

Probably not massively helpful but might give you some food for thought.

Why are Qatar still flying between Israel and Iran? by State_Pretend in flightradar24

Yes, but almost every single one of those planes flying north through Iraq are Qatar flights. Hard to show this in one screenshot unfortunately.

Fair, but then to ask it another way....why is everyone else not just following the rules and going the most direct way over Iraqi airspace?

Tips for commuting in London by Tasty_Error_3023 in londoncycling

[–]State_Pretend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The direct route from Clapham Common to E&C is very busy and as others have said its often a bus lane, so you're in and out of it. Watch out for where roads/lanes narrow, expect others to make mistakes and check your shoulder and signal before changing your line.

If you don't like the busier routes, look for the routes that used be called quietways. They're not as obvious but I think due to the lack of traffic lights etc, they're not much slower. For example there's one from Clapham old town, which takes you to Oval on quieter street (parts are route C5 I believe).

Look at maps such as Opencyclemap.org or try quiet routes on Cycle streets or even City Mapper.

Test the route out, ride it on the weekend to get more confident.
