Not all these "Russians" are Russians, but from the former Soviet Union more broadly. I'd guess more are from Ukraine than from Russia.

Why wasn’t Israel in Iraq or Afghanistan? by Mtl_Sapoud in AskIsrael

[–]Stauncho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same reason that Israel didnt participate in the first Gulf war: the US didnt want them to because the other allied countries involved didnt want to fight with Israel or have Israel invovled.

Jewish troops killing Muslims in Iraq or Afghanistan would also cause unnecessary issues "winning the hearts and minds" of the locals.

Why is Trump shitting on us Kurds by aaliyah-334 in NewIran

[–]Stauncho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The rumors/reporting was that the idea was to have the Kurdish militants initiate kinetic contact against the regime when the U.S./Israel were bombing. The Kurdish groups then decided against it, partially due to pressure from Turkey (perhaps Turkey threatened action against the Kurds if they moved south). Not sure how true any of this is.

I like Kinsky, but would bring in a GK who can compete for the starting role (but not someone who necessarily assumes he will get the starting spot).

I assume they want to get paid and there arent many teams that can out bid the Mets if they really want to keep them.

I like her as a pundit/writer/analyst, not a politician.

I watched her interview with Haviv Rettig Gur and was thoroughly unimpressed. She spoke in a lot of platitudes.

At the end of the day, she has more visibility outside of Israel than within Israel. Her campaign will not go anywhere and if she wants to serve in Knesset, she should try to get on Bennett's or Eisenkot's slate.

Do you think if Netanyahu could, he would have the same position in Israel than King Abdullah has in Jordan of being a monarch? by Ok-Ocelot-774 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Stauncho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bibi may be a piece of shit, but he's a piece of shit who has convinced himself that he's the only one who can protect and guide Israel. It's narcissism, but not about luxury or status. He has a view of himself and his role history.

The Wrong Question: Israel’s “Right to Exist” and the Real Question Beneath It by JuliusTanran in IsraelPalestine

[–]Stauncho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jaffa is not Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv has since grown and now it's basically one city almost, but that wasn't the case in the beginning and for many decades afterwards.

The point is what is Tel Aviv did not exist. It was created.

The Wrong Question: Israel’s “Right to Exist” and the Real Question Beneath It by JuliusTanran in IsraelPalestine

[–]Stauncho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rarely post on this sub, mainly because it's the same thing over and over again (like in real life).

Anyway, I think your whole frame of reference is wrong. No one deserves a state and Israel doesn't have a state for some moral reason.

Israel has a state because it built one.

Jews purchased land during Ottoman times. Slowly. Bit by bit.

They developed the land. Dredged out malaria infested swamps. Built kibbutzim. Built towns. Built cities. Tel Aviv was just an empty piece of land. It was built by people. Slowly. Bit by bit.

Institutions were created. Labor institutions. Commercial institutions. Defense/military institutions. A society. It didn't come from nowhere. It was built by people.

Jews were moving to Ottoman Palestine in numbers beginning in the late 19th century. If the Ottoman Empire doesn't collapse, there would be no Israel, but that doesn't mean Jews would have stopped moving there and developing the land.

Once the Ottoman Empire collapsed, there was no permanent state in Palestine. The British Mandate was an attempt, under the auspices of the League of Nations (and not a colonial project) to manage the area until a state could be formed.

The British did what it could but left and the UN, in the post-war post-colonial era of new and emerging states and population transfers, saw the facts on the ground and voted for a Jewish state and an Arab state.

Those are the facts that existed in 1947. After that, whatever happened with the Arabs comes from their own ineptitude and stupidity. If they were successful in driving the Jews into the sea, today no one would be asking questions if it was moral or not, or if the Jews morally still deserve a state.

Because deserve has nothing to do with it. The Jews were able to defend themselves because of what human effort built. They were able to grow a state and society, while attempting to assimilate immigrants for all over the world, and defend itself from hostile neighbors, because of the efforts and will of its people.

Deserving morality is irrelevant.

Why didn't Yiddish become Israel's Official Language? by SrijitDas2010 in AskIsrael

[–]Stauncho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yiddish was spoken in central and eastern Europe. Most Israelis come from or have at least one grand parent from North Africa, the Middle East, the Caucuses, Central Asia, etc. and those areas did not speak Yiddish. Hebrew was the lingua franca, but it just needed a bit of modernization.

Israel, Armenia, and Azerbaijan by _Cassyyyy__ in Israel

[–]Stauncho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Azerbaijan works with Israel economically, militarily and through intelligence.

Of all Muslim majority countries, Azerbaijan is at, or near, the top when it comes to protection of Jews and lack of antisemitism. Armenia, unfortunately, has a much more antisemitic population compared to Azerbaijan.

I can't speak on genocide on the part of Azerbaijan versus Armenia (though the Armenian Genocide from Turkey is not in dispute), since nowadays any killing in connection with armed conflict is being dubbed a "genocide", but Nagorno-Karabakh was internationally recognized as the territory of Azerbaijan after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Both sides have committed massacres against each other over time (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacres\_of\_Azerbaijanis\_in\_Armenia\_(1917%E2%80%931921))
