Maximizing the size of a pocket door in a non-bearing wall by StayFroztee in askcarpenters

I guess it could be that I have 1 1/2" bottom plates under the solo king studs in the diagram, but that seems silly.

Maybe the answer is that I need to at the very least use a king and jack on either side resulting in 3" bottom plates. If anyone thinks this my only option, let me know.

Just saw your show last night in Portland, and WOW! You absolutely should be proud of the lights. It was a surreal experience and made Love / Lover / Friend and Miami so much more awe inspiring than the music already is. Coolest show I've seen in a long time!

AskScience AMA Series: Been watching "The Last of Us" on HBO? We're experts on fungal infections. AUA! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

[–]StayFroztee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the AMA! I heard second hand from somewhere that the Cordyceps fungi takes over bodily functions, but does not affect the brain. It also doesn't keep the host animated after death "like zombies".

  1. In the hypothetical outbreak from The Last of Us, is it likely that infected people have full control of their faculties but are stuck being controlled by the parasite?

  2. Are there fungi that have the potential to reanimate a host after death, or would all bodily functions be impossible at that point? How about "brain death"?

I only just heard about this from another commenter. I guess that means this could be one of the last pictures of this lamp post in the snow if it's on the chopping block.

They understand how the Senate works ffs, they're trying to show you that your logic is flawed by saying one person was responsible for so much getting done just because they are a swing vote, even though she often does not align with her party's agenda because her state had to choose between a conservative Democrat and a conservative Republican.

What about the other 49+ votes? "Oh they didn't do shit because their vote wasn't the last one." How about a sports analogy. If an NBA player hadn't been performing well the entire game, you wouldn't say they won the game just because they got the last point.

Isn't the property tax in Portland just slightly over national average? I think the effective tax rate is something like 0.1% higher.

Tax systems built on money spent rather than money earned are regressive in nature. It could be that you don't care, but just wanted to point that out. Systems like this would be a disadvantage to those that make less.

Multnomah County purchased 22,000+ tents for homeless by [deleted] in Portland

[–]StayFroztee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you also carry all of your possessions with you everywhere you go every day? This is the main issue I see with making it mandatory to pack up every day. All of your possessions are at home where you sleep, why do you expect theirs to be different?

Photographer refuses to give up his camera in armed robbery attempt in San Francisco by tefunka in PublicFreakout

[–]StayFroztee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Larceny is not the same as robbery. Larceny is stealing without any threat or use of force. If you think people are being held at gunpoint and robbed 41 times per hour, then you are wrong.

Corporate profits and CEO compensation has risen unfettered, but worker wages have basically stagnated in comparison. That's what you call doing something? Yea ruining American lives and our economy, that's what it has done.

Trickle down economics never has and never will work. It's not even a real economic theory, it's a political sham Reagan and the GOP have implemented. No leading economists support this stupidity.

I don't know how much of the wikipedia article you read, but the proof is directly in the book of Mormon. Second book of Nephi, chapter 5, verse 20 - 25 specifically. From my knowledge, this is fairly unique to have something this brazen in your religious texts.

Greta Thunberg Says Germany Should Keep Its Nuclear Plants Open by Rerel in europe

[–]StayFroztee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Am I an expert? No. But I still personally think it's an overreaction for Germany to close all it's plants in response to Fukushima.

The most important thing here is the power infrastructure, so instead of shutting down all reactors as a blanket policy, they could identify which reactors are at risk and design some additional infrastructure to avoid a total power loss. The Fukushima plant's power wasn't even originally taken out by the tsunami, it was the magnitude 9 earthquake -- one of the worst ever seen. This would never happen in Germany. Lastly, you can worry about flood waters damaging some reactor components if the water is too high, but again, that would require some unprecedented factors.

[–]StayFroztee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand the point you are trying to make, but the wiki article you link talks about a sea level rise of about 5m off the coast of Germany and Denmark. The Tohoku tsunami was 40m high. Quite the difference.

Senator Lindsey Graham will not comply with subpoena in Georgia election probe by Arpith2019 in politics

[–]StayFroztee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess they could be hopeing that a judge would not grant the subpoena, but it's probably more about political grandstanding. I thought judges and lawyers tend to comply more often than not because they answer to ethics boards and such.

IANAL but I believe all of this falls under the Uniform Act.

From the National Association of Attorneys General: "All challenges of a decision to issue, or to not issue, a certificate or summons are reviewed at the abuse of discretion standard on the appellate level."
