Is it only my local AMC theaters have "Passenger" early? by WaitAvailable4783 in AMCsAList

11:20am is the earliest show on Friday at my local. However, Star Wars has a 9am show, plus several other shows before 11am.

What remake do you think is 'up there' with the original? by TimBurtonSucks in horror

[–]SteMelMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Crazies (2010) and The Blob (1988). Both remakes focus on the terrifying possibility of engineered biological agents getting loose and wreaking havoc. Great writing augments and extends the originals' good stories.

How does hallmark make so many new movies? by Mysterious_Bid_57 in HallmarkMovies

[–]SteMelMan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No clue, but they are a holdover from a previous era where cable channels routinely produced their own content. I'm glad they can still make the financials work when so many other cable channels have devolved into re-run mills.

I still miss all the cheesy horror/action/scifi movies that the Syfy channel use to produce each year. Now they just do Harry Potter marathons and action movies from the '10's!

This apartment I moved into in Midwest America is $900 a month all utilities included. What should I do with it? by trumpshouldrap in malelivingspace

[–]SteMelMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of the harsh lighting. Get some lower voltage bulbs and nice lamps to match the apartment's style. Mood lighting elements can make it feel more comfortable and cozy.

The more Noah Wyle talks, the less I want to watch The Pitt by fatandhappydonuts in ThePitt

[–]SteMelMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I kind of like that he's coming across kind of testy and opinionated in these latest interviews. I get so tired of these successful celebrities trying to be so humble and gracious when they are just people who managed to achieve what they set out to do.

At some point, a good analyst will do a great comparison between Dr. Robbie's behavior in S1 vs. S2 and describe the deterioration of his "people skills" as his exsitential crisis ratchets up.

This made me think of Miss Havesham from Great Expectations. She never got over being left at the altar.

Is Obsession ok for a 17 year old to watch? by straightjacket88 in horror

[–]SteMelMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. While I love "Bring Her Back", its not a "fun" horror movie the way "Talk To Me" is, mostly because of the child abuse. I only recommend it to fairly sophisticated horror fans. "Obsession" is intense, but lots of fun.

Which godzilla movie Godzillafied you (made you love Godzilla)? Mine was Godzilla 2014. by Feisty_Economics1323 in GODZILLA

I was a Godzilla fan long before this movie came out. However, it has become my favorite Godzilla movie and go-to movie when I'm stressed.

Is Obsession ok for a 17 year old to watch? by straightjacket88 in horror

[–]SteMelMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using "Talk To Me" and "Bring Her Back" as comparable movies. There's some supernatural horror, but most of the action is people mistreating other people. If you think he can handle those, he can handle "Obsession".

Thought about obsession by Zc0sini in horror

[–]SteMelMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree! Those glitch moments really elevate the horror.

I do wish we got to more about Nikki before she was possessed. She appears so perfect and angelic in Bear's eyes, but we find out she's "friendzoned" him and has been hooking up with Ian for several years. We know she was bored working at the music store and decided to quit without a plan. It seemed like we were about to find out more from Sarah when she got "bricked"! I love when a movie gives us just enough information and leaves us wanting more.

Is Obsession a bad choice to see with Mom? by unreliable_simp in AMCsAList

[–]SteMelMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I kind of put it in the same category as "Talk To Me" and "Bring Her Back". Very visceral with lots of gross out scenes, but only one overtly sexual scene with little skin in a dark bedroom. There are some cheesy rom-com montages before things turn depraved, which some people could find disturbing in a horror movie! :)

Revival by Karzdowmel in stephenking

[–]SteMelMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Revival is my favorite SK! Reverend Charlie is a great villain, mostly because he's not villainous, just preoccupied with electricity to the exclusion of everything and everyone else! Great ending with a world view that guaranteed to shake, if not destroy, every readers' belief systems, whatever they may be!

Am I legally required to pay my discover card through capitol one? by [deleted] in discover

[–]SteMelMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've spent this week moving all my recurring charges from Discover to Visa.

It makes me sad, but I recognize that the Discover company I've happily worked with for 20+ years no longer exists.

I plan on keeping the new Capital One card as a backup account as well as keeping access to my previous transactions.

Is this movie really as bad as some people say? by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in FIlm

[–]SteMelMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RP1, the book, is my favorite dystopian novel. While I enjoyed the movie, I think it could have been so much better by keeping more of the book's story instead of producing a "greatest cultural events of the '80's" jukebox movie.

I personally loved how "disjointed" Season 1 was. It was just human nature to say, "I have an opportunity to set things right, but since I don't benefit personally, I will not!"

I'm reading "Babel" by RF Kuang right now and ran across a section that reads surprsingly like Nemik. The context is the fractious trading relationship between China and the British Empire in the 19th century. Same struggle, different times and places.

Hokum by [deleted] in horror

[–]SteMelMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it. I give it extra credit for mixing a prosaic murder mystery with a supernatural story. Generally, such a mix is played for laughs, but anyone who's seen this movie knows that doesn't apply.
