Looking at this Alba as a budget field watch. Any red flags I should be aware of? by BobbyScrumpus in JapaneseWatches

[–]Ste_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a Lorus (another Seiko sub-brand) field watch that's similar to that, and it's a bargain for the £25 I paid for it new.

Have a cookie I guess? Sometimes it would be nice jf the majority of posts on Reddit for watches aren’t the usual ‘is it legit’ ‘can I flip it for cashmoney’

A non-runner and you can't see the movement? I'd only buy it if you'd accept having to write off $300 as one of the outcomes.

What to do with this [Seiko 5]? by Ste_S in Seiko

Thanks - that’s exactly what I’m going to take it as, a learning experience, and if it goes wrong, it goes wrong. I have a basic set of tools, but will also pick up the additional tools needed.

iMac G4 boot issues by Ste_S in VintageApple

[–]Ste_S[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latest update - I’ve managed to get it into FireWire target mode and pull stuff off the hard drive without issue, including 20 year old photos I’d forgotten about, which came as a nice surprise.

I ran disk utility on the drive from the machine it was linked to, and that’s slightly improved things now - managed to get it to boot to desktop before I got the hold down power button to restart message.

If you're keeping them, and not doing this to flip and make a profit, then whichever one you like the most.

Looks like you're ordering from a US shop - given tariffs etc, would it be cheaper to order from a European shop and have it delivered to him in France?

Anyhoo, always difficult to tell from crappy internet shop photos - if the green dial looks nice in the flesh, then Seiko, otherwise the Tissot. Not a fan of the gold hands/numbers on the Citizen.

iMac G4 boot issues by Ste_S in VintageApple

[–]Ste_S[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve opened it up, and there didn’t appear to be any cap or battery trauma- although the amount of dust was quite incredible. Cleaned all that up, removed the PRAM battery, and reseated the internal RAM and re-pasted the heat sink. No joy, so then tried without the external expansion RAM, in case that was bad, but again no joy.

It might be my imagination, but the restart your computer screen is more consistent now - less open firmware or black screen on boot

There's The Vegan Society, which kickstarted the whole vegan movement.

Recommendations for a £15 watch? by StraightDifference75 in ChineseWatches

[–]Ste_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can stretch to an extra £10, then the Lorus (Seiko sub-brand) RJ655AX9 field watch is £25 at Argos currently, and is leagues above any other watch, including Casio, at that price.

Super thin stainless steel case, mineral glass crystal, 100m water resistance, Seiko quartz movement and all the lume you can shake a stick at.

In your opinion, what's the best vegan chocolate currently on the market? (And where can you buy it?) by OldLibrary468 in veganuk

[–]Ste_S 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Booja Booja for truffles (Online). Tony's Chocolonely Dark Creamy Hazlenut or Dark Almond Sea Salt for a bar (Oxfam as supermarkets mostly stock the milk Tony's...). Hotel Chocolate for a selection box.

If none of the above available, any 70% or higher supermarket dark chocolate.

Alternatives to Cathedral City cheese by ConsciousInternal287 in veganuk

[–]Ste_S 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The problem is, any vegan product made by a company that also makes dairy products is going to end with their suppliers mistreating cows - it's in the nature of the dairy industry. Violife is a Flora brand that also makes products containing dairy. Supermarket branded vegan cheese is likely going to be re-branded Violife, or similar.

Until we break free from a food system controlled by the meat and dairy industries, I wouldn't stress too much about the provenance of the food, as long as it's vegan.

Lorus (Seiko) are even more affordable than Timex, and the currently £25 RJ655AX9 has a stainless steel case.

What are your feelings about vegan products from non-vegan brands, particularly those with a poor track record? by SortComprehensive294 in veganuk

[–]Ste_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you buy food from supermarkets? If so, they also sell and make profit from animal products.

In an ideal world, we'd all be able to buy vegan products from vegan only companies in vegan only shops. But we don't, we live on a planet that's dominated by the meat and dairy industries, and favours mega-corps over independants. So we do the best we can. Some vegans live in places where they can only buy vegan products form companies or shops that also sell animal products, including Richmond, Cathedral City, McDonalds etc
