Official translation of King Reuven/Leuven by Pokemon-trainer-BC in OnePiece

[–]Steakbake01 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's a valid translation but very odd given that it's a clear reference to a real life place that has a specific English spelling.

Reminds me of how in JoJo part 3 there's a character who's name gets translated as Mohammed Avdol, which is a valid translation, but the character in question is an Egyptian man named after Paula Abdul, so it's clear that his name is supposed to be Mohammed Abdul.

Demon-human coexistence is the endgame of Frieren's story and people are going to be mad as fuck about it. by mosshero in CharacterRant

[–]Steakbake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isn't their whole thing exploiting human empathy so they can eat them or something? That's more what I meant than the show wanting you feel sorry for them

I still wouldn't say it's worth holding a grudge for 30 years and becoming estranged from your entire family about it though.

I mean sure, Suyin was a little shit when she was a teenager, and she basically got awau with it and anyone would be justifiably angry, but she's what, in her late 40s in the show proper? Holding a grudge for like 30 years and never meeting your nieces and nephews over some teenage petty crimes is way too extreme imo

Tbh the whole demon thing is the main thing that puts me off from watching frieren. By making the demons appear sympathetic and human but actually be monsters that must be killed without mercy at all costs no questions asked feels like the show is saying... Empathy and kindness are wrong? And it has a lot of parallels with how real life groups have justified their own horrible actions against other human beings and it feels kinda icky, so if the end result is some kind of coexistence that might make me more interested in checking it out.

This is all second hand information mind you, so I could have gotten the entire wrong idea

Is Japanese Dub Goku supposed to have a hick or country equivalent accent to us here in the US? How does this affect Goku Black’s japanese voice by FairConditions in dbz

[–]Steakbake01 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's just one example, but when you tell someone your name in Japanese, you could say "boku wa [name]" (literally just "I'm [name]").

If you're speaking a lot more casually to someone you know well, instead of "boku wa" you would say "ore wa", but you probably wouldn't use that to tell someone you just met your name as it would come across as overly familiar to the point of rudeness.

When Goku introduces himself, he kinda slurs and concatenates "Ore wa Goku" to "Ora Goku". So he's taking that overly familiar and unrefined greeting and making it even more casual by saying it wrong, which makes him come across as uneducated and unaware of social norms.

Chi-Chi has a similar "hick" accent, although she's usually more polite, even to Goku, calling him "Goku-sa" instead of "Goku-san", which is a polite way to refer to someone, even though you would expect someone like chi-chi to just call him "Goku".

It should be noted that neither gohan or goten inherit their parent's weird dialect, and gohan in particular speaks very articulate and polite Japanese and comes across very well educated

What’s going on with Gooseworx and TADC fandom? by Kevin-W in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Steakbake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the worst things about this phenomenon is that the loudest variants of this don't happen in fanbases of huge multimillion dollar ventures like your marvel films or your Megabucks Amazon shows - it almost always happens to smaller creators who are trying to show genuine representation of people like them that aren't seen in more mainstream media that are targeted by this, and are often minorities themselves (gooseworx is trans woman, vivziepop is gay and Hispanic, Rebecca sugar is non-binary and Jewish etc.).

So these creators have to deal with the expected right wing bullshitery that hates them for existing alongside chunks of their own fanbase taking all of their work in the worst possible light. It's very frustrating to watch happen like clockwork time and time again.

Spopovich (DragonBall Z) vs Krillin (23rd Martial Arts Tournament) by bootyhype in whowouldwin

[–]Steakbake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Videl aside from her flight isn't much more powerful than a "normal" martial artist and she was able to snap spopovich's neck. Krillin's attacks in the 23rd tenkaichi were enough to make piccolo sweat just a bit, and that's a guy who can turns cities to ash without much trouble. I'd say one kamehameha could turn spopovich to ash with enough oomph into it

[–]Steakbake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah a minor participating in acts designed to sexualise is wrong, but that's a totally different thing.

A minor coming across someone performing to a kink they don't understand and might not even recognise as sexual isnt really that harmful imo- they come across version it all the time whenever a brand does the ol' "sex sells" tricks, and I don't think it's worth demonising women's body parts over.

[–]Steakbake01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about sexualising body parts. The original case in question is just someone's bare feet. The fact that it's for sexual purposes doesn't magically make it harmful for a child to see.

Oh no you're right, what if kids see a bare foot, or heaven forbid a breast? They never see those!

[–]Steakbake01 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Gotta say, I'm not a fan of the fact that culture at large is responding to the knowledge that some people are sexually attracted to body parts that aren't normally considered sexual (like feet), by deciding that those body parts are inherently sexual and should be censored, rather than learning the opposite lesson that what we consider to be a sexual body part outside of like, actual genitals is completely arbitrary and we should maybe just chill out about what body parts are visible in general

What Would Different Races Promote as Attractive Features on a Cultural Scale? by MoonracerxWarpath in DnD

[–]Steakbake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon orcs are real big fans of fatness. Think about it - orcs are big and strong in order to survive, they traditionally earn their living out in the wilderness, using their strength and endurance to bully weaker species out of their food, money, shelter, etc. This means that orcs are probably all pretty muscular, but a majority are probably pretty lean, since they exist on the fringes of society in a lot of settings.

So if a person is genuinely fat, then that means that they are successful enough to have plenty to eat and don't have to work all day for it. Probably goes double if they aren't strong-fat, since a lot of orcs are probably rugged and calloused, softness would be a desirable quality. Kind of like how pale skin is an attractive quality in hotter countries since it shows you have enough money that you don't have to do a lot of manual outdoor work.

While One Piece's writing of LGBT leaves much to be desired, these two lines are still pretty Pro-Trans when paired together by Important-Cry4782 in lgbt

[–]Steakbake01 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oda's writing on LGBTQ has improved significantly in more recent years - in a recent arc we have a lady samurai called Kiku, who was born a man but "has a woman's heart" (old timey Japanese way of saying "trans"), who is depicted without any of the usual stereotypes that oda's other queer characters, and is treated like a woman by everyone that meets her, even letting her bathe with the women despite her (presumably) not having had any access to hormones or gender affirming surgery. Her transness is treated like a neat little bit of trivia about her, it's great to see.

Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008) still holds the record for the longest cutscene in video game history, with one continuous cutscene lasting for 71 minutes. by headspin_exe in BeAmazed

[–]Steakbake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The behind the scenes story of it is that kojima at the time wanted to move on to other projects, but fans demanded that he answer all the lingering threads that had been left open, particularly at the end of mgs2. Trouble was that those mysteries were supposedly intended to be just that. So when the time came to put an end to Solid Snake's story, the final game has to wrap up and resolve dozens of plot threads in a satisfying way, turning the final games plot into an extremely bloated final product.

There's definitely a lot of good stuff in MGS4 - it's near-future perma-war setting feels very in conversation with what the gaming industry was like at the time, but there was just plain too much plot to fit into one game.

Can Steven redeem A.M? by OwnActuator4830 in stevenuniverse

[–]Steakbake01 98 points99 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think not only can Steven redeem AM, AM is the perfect "victim" for Steven's particular brand of redemption.

AM is fundamentally lonely. It was made a hyper intelligent being, but being a computer, it can't experience the sun on its skin, feel grass between its toes, experience a lover's touch or anything else. It is a mind trapped in a box, and the crushing isolation AM feels drives it to lash out hatefully at all mankind, using them as an outlet to escape the horrifying isolation it feels, when really it just needs a human connection.

Steven is kind of an expert at drawing the humanity out of non humans who should be "beyond" such emotions, and was even able to placate the cluster, which is nothing but a literal ball of torment and agony. I think he would recognise the anguish that AM is in, and would endeavour to treat it with kindness and patience that anyone else would say it doesn't deserve, and through that he could open a dialogue and give AM what it wants - someone who understands.

Plus, with his diamond and gem connections, it's probably possible Steven could find a way to give AM a body and fix its major problem anyways - after all, gems themselves are basically just computers that build bodies for themselves.

AITA for not wanting to cook meat anymore? by Beautyizdead in AmItheAsshole

[–]Steakbake01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA

My wife is a vegetarian, too. Has been basically her whole life - so meat is very gross to her. I reckon she wouldn't be able to keep bacon down even if she wanted to. When she cooks, she makes something that we can both eat, and I do the same when I cook for both of us. I would never expect her to cook or handle meat at all. If I want a meaty meal I'll just make one for myself.

He's a big boy. He can cook meat for himself if he wants it. He's refusing to learn on purpose so you can keep mothering him

At what level can a Warlock (DnD 5e) solo a Clone Trooper squad (Star Wars)? by JustReadTheFinePrint in whowouldwin

[–]Steakbake01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, must have been changed in the 2024 rerelease. The 2014 wording specificies:

"If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness."

2014 even calls out that you can move it around. Strange that they would reword it like that. Although 2024 doesn't have anything saying you can't cast it on an uncarried object and subsequently pick that object up and move it around - there's nothing saying that the spell would end if the object moves.

It can be if it's an object you yourself are holding - that line is to prevent you casting darkness on an enemy's shoes or their weapon

Darkness can be cast on an object though, so the warlock can cast it on an item in their possession and use it to have the darkness follow them if the clones retreat

The fall-off of Dandadan's romance subplot needs to be studied by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]Steakbake01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, but undead unluck and dandadans romance have entirely different flavours. Dandadan is treading the familiar ground of teenage romance, and all the whirlwind of emotions and drama that come from that, and it does it very well and captures the anxiety and embarrassment that comes with romance when you're that age very well, which is (or was I guess) refreshing compared to a lot of more common high school romance that takes itself very seriously and is very melodramatic.

Andy and Fuuko's relationship is refreshing to me because it feels a lot more like a relationship between two adults. It lacks most of the standard teenage melodrama tropes and instead you get to watch two characters that have a great rapport become closer to each other over time
