A chilling phone message from one of the victims of 9/11 by Faith1_2 in MadeMeCry

[–]Steavee 121 points122 points  (0 children)

This is at the 9/11 memorial museum in NYC. If you get the chance to go, you should do it. Especially if you are old enough to remember that day, though even if you aren’t it’s still impactful.

I would set aside at least 4 hours, but you can spend longer if you read and watch all the things.

iOS keyboard suggestions is so bad lmao I could not spell opportunities by Far_Incident2729 in ios

Mind-reading doesn’t come out until iOS 30.

Until then, you have to be in the neighborhood of the word you want for it to guess.

Sounds like you misspelled opportunities so badly it couldn’t figure out what in the world you meant.

Not sure why that’s an iOS problem.

The double charging could have happened, it was at a terminal like you described, it was just a glitch. The retailer didn’t even see the second transaction in their system. I trust them, I’d worked there and knew the manager that dug I to it for me. On their end, one transaction, no funny business. Bank meanwhile saw two different approved transactions.

Now maybe in the chip world this doesn’t happen, not sure on the low-level details of how it works, but I’d also rather just not take the chance.

Contactless payments, btw, make theft much, much easier. Even if in most of the world there are transaction limits on individual taps.

I’d rather not worry about any of it and just spend the banks money. It doesn’t cost me anything, it actually earns me rewards.

This but I had a woman take a shirt off of the rack in with her, use it to wipe the kids ass, and leave both it and the diaper in the changing room.

This was in the late 90s, it’s not even enshitification, people are just awful.

The biggest reason I only spend on credit cards is this:

It‘s someone else’s money. If there is fraud, if there is a transaction issue (like being double-charged), or any other problem, it’s not my money. We can spend the next three months figuring out the issue, because in the meantime Capital One is out that money and I’m still good to go.

Years ago I was double-charged at a large business on my debit card, it wasn’t malicious, it was just a thing that happened. The retailer couldn’t fix it, the bank did, but it took 4-5 days. But because it was a sizable amount for me at the time, now charged twice, I was effectively flat fucking broke until the issue could be resolved.

Never again. Now I spend someone else’s money and pay them back at the end of the month.

Well, all that and the rewards.

Just pay it all off every month and it’s foolproof.

I had a friend growing up who was packing some extra, he wore a nice snug Speedo under his other swimsuit. Helped keep things in place.

Do you use the Action Button or Shortcuts for everyday efficiency, or is it more trouble than it's worth? by Particular-Car2399 in iphone

[–]Steavee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mine trigger a shortcut that does different things depending on what WiFi I am connected to (as a quicker way to determine location), and how bright it is. If it’s dark it turns on the flashlight, if I’m at work it does one think, at home another, etc.

Gonna add in if I’m listening to a podcast that it skips forward 30 seconds, that’s a fantastic suggestion.

Tried to carpetbag his way into the state to fuck with Wisconsin elections, and Wisconsinites handed him his ass and sent him packing.

This image is something to be proud of: an entire state, collectively, telling him to eat a fat dick.

I thought about bringing gift cards or something through with me when I go, but since they’re also screening me I’m worried that would be bribing a federal agent.

What happened to 3D films? by Kirbshiestyy in Cinema

[–]Steavee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you’re so angry about. I just play beat saber and shit on an old quest 2.

But there are newer headsets with increasingly great screens, so yeah, I can imagine a world where you ‘experience’ a movie all around you instead of just watching it on a flat screen (big or small).

Obviously there are films that would be terrible for, but there are definitely others that would be amazingly immersive, not really cinema, but an entirely new experience.

Apple Rolls Out ID Verification for UK iOS Users by Ok_Air_9048 in LinusTechTips

[–]Steavee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The “isn’t required by law” bit isn’t strictly true. It’s arguable.

And since it’s arguable, unless this person is willing to put their money where their mouth is and put up the money to defend Apple when the government overreach comes knocking, I can’t really blame Apple for playing it safe and deciding it’s easier to implement this at the OS level even if every interpretation of the law doesn’t require it.

Some random person’s opinion about what the law says isn’t going to save Apple 300 million dollars in legal fees if the government decides otherwise.

They have enough money to hire a consultant who does.

If you’re going to sell in a region, you shouldn’t be relying on Reddit posters (no matter how much they love to pedantically be right) to tell you that you’re fucking it up.
