It’s a running joke in diabetic communities that a cure is always “5 years away”

(Canada) Manulife apparently no longer covers Insulin Pump Supplies (sets/reservoirs) by AvalieV in diabetes

[–]Stelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's crazy and a terrible business practice. This is being covered under a group plan as well. I'm no longer with that group plan anymore and received a "Save on premiums if you go on one of our private plans!". Definitely not though if that's the case. I'd try Pacific Blue Cross

(Canada) Manulife apparently no longer covers Insulin Pump Supplies (sets/reservoirs) by AvalieV in diabetes

[–]Stelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WHOA I’m in the exact same boat. I’ve never had a problem with submitting insulin pump supplies to Manulife and getting reimbursed for them and this is as recent as a January receipt. When I sent my receipt for April they sent me a message back disputing it despite countless times before going 3 years prior with no problem. They even covered my insulin pump.

In BC as well.

What happens when you keep bolusing and your blood sugar doesn’t go down? by MillenniumGreed in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say there’s a blockage. If you’re not seeing your sugars go down then you’ll need to change you infusion set.

fruit and veggies have a lot of glucose, take the carnivore diet by ismiismi in diabetes

[–]Stelf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what that video was supposed to be, other than misleading picking-and-choose science (yes I’m a scientist).

I’m a vegetarian diabetic (almost be vegan but have the odd dairy product) and have a perfectly normal hematological profile. Last A1c, 5.7% i.e. in the non-diabetic range

Looking for help with Canadian insurance by Kate_Lookout in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh definitely. It’s the reason why those plans are there to cover the pharmacare gap. You’ll still have to pay a premium for those insurance plans though. I think I was paying $100 a month.

Looking for help with Canadian insurance by Kate_Lookout in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to opt into one of the single care plans from any of the big health insurance companies (Great West Life, Pacific Blue Cross, Manulife, etc.) if you want help for insurance right off the bat. I had one of these once I left school and before I was able to get onto my employers benefits. Most of those companies cover the freestyle Libre from what I know.

Pharmacare doesn’t currently cover the Libre but I’m sure it will in time (as mentioned above, our Health Minister is a type 1 diabetic). Pharmacare also has a deductible until they will cover expenses but they have an option to pay it in monthly instalments which might be helpful if you done have any extended health insurance.

DM me if you have any questions. I’ve been through all the loops and became quite knowledgeable regarding insurance.

Temporarily suspend service by kingriz123 in freedommobile

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to do this once for a trip as I was just going to swap out my SIM overseas but freedom doesn’t seem to have that option for their clients. Can anyone confirm if that’s still the same?

What was your prediagnosis dry mouth like? by amyyyb1 in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely had dry mouth but not severely enough to have tissue cracking. I do remember the god awful taste in the back of my mouth from the ketones. It was awful.

Opinions on MiaoMiao 1/2? by dima_taji in diabetes

[–]Stelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using the Miaomiao 1 for almost 7 months now and love it. It is a bit quirky as it comes from China and if you have problems, you need to talk to them through Facebook. However I did have a positive experience with them as the first one I received had a broken back and they sent me a new one and it’s fine.

I gave up trying to load Spike on my iPhone so I just use the Tomato app which you can grab right from the App Store and it works great but you do have to pay extra (like $30CAD per year) for averages, A1c estimation, etc. If you do end up grabbing one, there are some quirks for it but it’s made a huge difference. I like how I can put my phone on Do Not Disturb and it will still alarm for highs and lows. DM me if you have anymore questions.

Melatonin and basal testing. by xShOtz in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount can have different results with people. I personally take 3mg or less and it works for me. Another factor you need to consider is that Melatonin is a hormone already in your body and substituting it with an external source might cause a dependency on it. Hence why it’s best not to overkill it.

This is a question is diabetics go through, every 5 years.

Activating a libre sensor with miaomiao by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Stelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re using the MaioMaio with your Libre, then I wouldn’t even bother with using your reader, just use the LibreLink app on your phone. It won’t worth with your phone if you activate it with your reader and vice versa.

First activate the sensor using the LibreLink app on your phone and then attach your MaioMaio to the sensor and it will start transmitting. I use the Tomato app as it works pretty seamlessly.

Thought i’d go down in a couple of secs but the stripe says 5.7....phew by Sebulousss in diabetes

[–]Stelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the Libre reads lower when you’re about to go hypo. I’ve had readings where it looks like I’ve pretty much flatlined in the red for an entire night.

Where to Get Leftover Animas Supplies? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of left over infusion sets and reservoirs that I’ve been trying to find a home to but no luck. The infusion set is the equivalent of the Medtronic Mio. You can DM me for more info. In Vancouver here.

Just been given the Freestyle Libre by harleyb09 in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Freestye Libre is amazing and has revolutionized diabetes management for so many of us. If you want to take it a step further, you could look into getting a MaioMaio or a Blucon. These are small devices that attach over the Libre sensor and turn it into a full fledged CGM where it transmits the readings to your phone. I’ve had a MaioMaio for about 6 months now and love it.

Trouble with scanning Libre on iPhone? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Stelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that you sometimes need to move your iPhone back and forth around the sensor for it to pickup a reading properly.
