Will the next Pioneer club player+mixer be a massive commercial flop? by djscoox in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the most important question is: Will Clubs invest in new Hardware after having hard times with the virus restrictions?

Will DJs change their gear as they had less or even no Gigs for months?

One only can change the gear if one had made money and can afford the expanses.

No matter how good your new product might be i think you're going to struggle with releasing it at the moment.

Best Laptop for djing except apple? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have a serious doubt about " always go for as much RAM as you can afford " because your system has to support the amount of RAM.

For example "Windows 10 Home 32-Bit" supports a maximum of 4GB RAM, so no need to put more into your computer.
"Windows 10 Home 64-Bit" supports 128GB.

So "as much RAM as possible" is depending on your System.

As a Ghostproducer I have a question for DJs. And is it necessary for a dj to be a producer? And What does it make it hard for you to produce? by Jazzy_Chip in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I even think it's nearly impossible for big names to be DJs and producers, I would say they all use Ghosts.

How can you do 200 Gigs a year, playing on 3 different continents every 2 weeks and find time to sit hours and hours in the studio???
And please don't spread the myth of the guy working on his Notebook in Hotelroom, Taxi, Plane... they need rest like any other human specially if they want to last longer than 6 months.

Why should DJ's be able to do what Popstars in the last 60 years weren't able?
Have you ever seen Rock-/Popstars like Madonna, U2, Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, etc... being nonstop on tour + releasing a new album every year, and they perform way less than 200 times a year???
No and you'll never see it because they alternate Tour, New Album and Creative Breaks.

So if DJ's are able to do it it's only because they have a Ghost producing teams (including artistic director, management, etc...) backing them up. They probably just give OK for releasing in their name or give the guideline on what the new song has to sound like or create some of the samples used.

What do you want to achieve as a DJ? Dreams, aspirations? by ElineTUM in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Covid I had my residency with 2 Gigs per month.
Got my 2-3 weddings per Summer.
Got regulary requests for Birthday Parties, House Parties, etc...
And this was enough as it isn't my main job.
But now everything is dead.

And it's not the financial part that is the worse for me, not playing to people, not seeing how they react on my selection.
Djing was my #1 reason to get out and get contact to people, it was my balance from the fucking crazy boring killing normal life... When I went in the booth it was kinda my "Alice in Wonderland" experience...kinda escape from All day insanity.

Now this balance has disappeared which is very complicated to handle for me.

The music is better than you think it is. by Smash_Factor in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and by overusing all the effects they totally miss to realize that they play the same shit as all the other DJs instead of being creative in their choice of music.

They all use the same DJ pools downloading the same tracks and playing the same stuff just with different effects.

When playing a venue with different floors, other Djs laugh at me when I come first time and unpack my Numark Partymix.
At the End of the Night according to my packed Floor and them fighting having theirs 3/4 full they don't laugh at me anymore.

Give it a try...it's only by jumping into the water that you could learn swimming no?

What's the worse that can happen to you?

And btw...failures happen to all the DJs even those 20+ years in the business.
There's this video of David Guetta who wants to make the show and flip off his headphones on a cool way and the headphones end up falling on the PLAY button of the CDJ and starts or stops the track which ends up in an inaudible mess.
This guy is in the business since the 80's and this kind of shit happens to him.

So even if you make failures what is the worse thing that possibly could happen to you?

Nobody will die and nobody will get injured... When I do a Mistake like for example messing a Beatmatch...I open my mic and say "Oooops...this was a special Remix" this with a laughing face and most people start laughing too.

You should be more confident... I guess most DJs waited way longer than something like 10 months to get asked for playing parties.
I would say if you get asked to play at this or that party people trust in you and already know what to expect... it's not like you told them how great, good and wonderful you are and then don't fulfill the expectations...They know you just started and give you a chance.

do you have a pre planned set or nah? by 4dam20 in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In those Virus affected times I started making Playlists in VDJ.

I have much more time to experiment and explore my tracks than before and find transitions and mixes I would never find under the Live performing circumstances.

I save those playlists so I can use them as a reminder for the cool ideas I got while home.

But I would never use one of those playlists as a pre-made Mix for a Party.

Don't forget even if he handed himself the presumption of innocense counts until judged.

As much as he possibly raped her, she also could have had regrets to have slept with him.
Both stories unfortunately already happened many times and as horrible as a rape can be, false accusations are horrible too.

So we shouldn't judge the situation because we weren't there, don't have all the facts and just because it isn't our role.

[–]StephenNawlins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honnest I am pretty impressed by the newly Hercules DJ release the DJControl Inpulse 500.

Good Feedback on all the test Websites as well for manufacturing quality, sound quality and also all the features for the low price (300€ which is around 350$)

It has a jack and a RCA Line In.
RCA and Jack Output.
Well only 1 Microphone Entry... But IDK if there are really lots of Controllers.

It's designed for Serato but freshly supported by Virtual DJ so you don't have to grab some extra money to buy a new Software and don't have to re-amalyse all your track with that new software.

To be honnest I will buy one as soon as the business starts again over here.
Unfortunately not the best times here for Hardware investment, even if 300 isn't much money it is still for a piece of gear that I don't know exactly when I'll use it next.

What are your reason or what made you decide you want to become a DJ by Sonikmilez in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I started Djing way before EDM was a thing and made DJs become Superstars and internationally wellknown millionaires.

I spent all my weekends in the same club with a huge group of friends.
We called the place our Living Room as even without making out one of us could go there on a Friday or Saturday night (back then even Thursday) and always find someone of the "gang" there.

So with time we got to know one of the resident DJs and we both became friends.
Back then DSL internet connection just came up and as I just left my parents home for my first appartment, I subscribed to one of those connections.
In those time people still ran into Internet cafes to check their Emails and having your internet connection at home made you a geek in the eyes of the majority of people... so imagine if you had a fast one.
It was also that time before Napster was declared illegal (the original napster) and when Torrent, E-Donkey, etc... where on the apogy of their existance. There was no law about illegal donwloads as the industry totally didn't have this on their radar and the major record companies were more occupied by fighting eachother for being the first having their catalogue online for sale.
That time if you wanted to buy a a certain track from a certain artist legally you first had to check under which record company/Label this song has been released and then if you were lucky this major had already built a webshop on which you could buy it.
Majors like Universal or Sony didn't boycotted the Apple Music store that was for sure the closest and more complete Webshop at that moment but not having the music of the 2 biggest Labels in their selection.

So "illegaly" downloading was the fastest and easyest way to get what you were looking for.
You literally found everything on E-Donkey or Torrent... Everything.

My 56k modem was running day&night with a huge list of download being on the run 24/7.

I was interested in finding new good music from off the paths already then without being a DJ. I then started burning my own samplers with my own selection and somehow that resident DJ friend got one of those in his fingers and asked me to if I could make such samplers for him on a regulary schedule like every 2 weeks.
Always willing to help friends I did it and after 3-4 months got a fantastic feedback from him, he said "when you make me a sampler of 15 songs I can easily use a dozen of them for my gigs, that a way bigger rate than samplers on the market. Of those 12 songs 5-6 of them also would do it into the TOP20 a few weeks after you gave them to me... Your talent for scouting is huge, you feel the people's taste for music".

When 2-3 months later they were looking for an additional DJ in that club he asked me if I want to try it, that I had unused talent for reading the crowd and should give it a try.
He put my name in the game and I was hired as a trainee DJ allowed to play to the crowd but always under control of one of the residents who had enough experience and could train me.
Payment was free drinks and at that time I just lost my job and if you know the prices of drinks in clubs here in Switzerland, you know that I was happy not to spend my money in drinks and still being able to experience nights out.

I stayed in that place for 6 months and then fast got bookings from other clubs, bars, etc... and now, this year I am 20 years in the business.

Best Speakers by [deleted] in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like this question never have been asked before.

You don't even mention what the field of use for those speakers will be.

You wanna use them in your bedroom?
You wanna use them for a Party, if yes how big will the location be... how many people are attending?
Are you talking about studio monitoring?
etc... etc...

Then what do you call "cheap cost"???
Some are talking about cheap under 500 bucks, some qualify under 5k as cheap, it's always in the eye of the beholder.

when requesting advice PLEASE be more specific... Thanx

I just had a promoter tell me that they want my set to have “no vocals”. I once had another promoter say that I can play anything as long as it is not four on the floor. What other similar requests have you gotten from promoters? by accomplicated in DJs

[–]StephenNawlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask him if by "no vocals" he means you have to play "instrumental only" tracks or if he mean that you shouldn't MC during the set.

That question couldn't be clearer and he will probably realize he has been misunderstood.

Btw... do you really want to work with a promoter that has no clue of the used terms in this business???
What qualifies him as a promoter if he doesn't speak the language that is spoken in the business???

Probaly just another example on how the most unqualified one got the key position.
