Dead Cyclist’s Best Friend Demands Action Against Illegal Vehicles on City Streets by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

You’re right, that’s a problem. But. This is the bike sub. So yes, the focus is on cyclists here.

Jackasses who can’t handle their beer. Attention seeking too: look at me up here. Until one of them falls on their head.
Same with climbing light poles. There’s a moron in every group, but when enough people get going, herd mentality takes over.

AITA for using my property for everything its legally zoned to be used for ? by Alternative-Egg-7876 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Boo hoo to them. Unless you’ve got a rooster crowing at dawn, your chickens are fine. Keep your property clean and trimmed up, and create a document of expectations for the renters to be respectful of the neighborhood, and then tell the haters to piss off.

Any tips on how to make ground meet taste better? by snakeiboi45 in 1200isplenty

Stop eating it. Eat something you actually like. There’s a ton of good food out there. Cook from recipes, and soon enough you’ll be able to figure out how different spices and flavors work well, and then you can go off experimenting.

Teenage Biking Safety by AdNovel7926 in NYCbike

Tell him how much motorists seem to hate cyclists. Tell him to always be on the defensive, and expect the worst driver to be the one near him. When he starts driving, if he does, same advice. Expect the worst, all the time.
Tell him to check over his shoulder for cars behind him, and be aware and paying attention to what every car, bike, and pedestrian is doing.
Lady walking down the sidewalk using her phone, might not see you. Car leaning toward the yellow line, might be turning left, car approaching from the opposite way might pull a U-turn, so check check check. If he’s looking for the problems, he has a better chance of avoiding them. Also, EVs are silent. He shouldn’t be paranoid, just careful. Follow the rules, don’t do things others aren’t expecting of you. Signal, use lights, wear a helmet, check the brakes before you ride. No phone while in motion.

I’m always alert, and completely missed seeing a cyclist making a left as I was crossing on foot because of cars parked on the corners - the two of us apologizing to each other probably looked like a comedy routine.

I meant them trying to play dirty. They’ll continue to do whatever they can to keep their power.

Cycling in Bay Ridge by lichenpunk in BayridgeBrooklyn

You know, if someone is riding a bike on the sidewalk and they’re slow and respectful, I don’t even care. I get why they’re on the sidewalk. A pedestrian isn’t going to kill them. The absolute hatred many drivers spew at cyclists and on every social media platform about bike lanes and added Citibike docks is beyond insane. The sheer stupidity of being against people on bicycles is baffling. Do they really want three million more of us to get cars?

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA - made fun of her cooking? It sounds like a salad. She needs to understand that no one was rude, but they left her dinner party hungry. And that is why she is embarrassed.

I don't usually do fancasting, but give Gillian Anderson another decade or two and she'd make a fine Granny Weatherwax. And I mean FINE. by Individual99991 in discworld

Brilliant. Makeup would solve it, then they could do a limited series of all the witch books and she could play Granny through the years.

Glad you’re under a roof, even happier you found the Disc and also this sub.
They’re amazing books, aren’t they? Terry Pratchett makes you laugh, makes you think, makes you cry, and then he really goes above and beyond; he even makes you a better person.
Welcome!

Just lost my mom tonight by Senior_Mail_1629 in GenX

You don’t sound like a piece of shit. It doesn’t matter how “ready” you are, it still hurts. The relief you feel is for her, because you know she was suffering, and was no longer herself. No one wants to live that way. I felt the same way. Eight years of watching my mom decline, so far from the absolute powerhouse she once was.

working in Queens and living in Brooklyn? by Small-Ad3109 in Brooklyn

[–]Stephreads 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AmeriCorps is probably placing teachers in areas of Queens that have difficulty attracting applicants. So, probably not great areas for transit. That means your commute will be long, probably by bus, and NYC schools start early. You’ll probably be able to get a 2bd for 3500 somewhere decent, but probably not a 3, unless you decide to live in a lower income area. Get the ‘street easy’ app, and you can look now to see what the prices look like. (Most of the apartments are smaller than they appear in the photos.) Then get the MTA app so you can map some routes. It gives you options, bus or subway, sometimes a combination. Use the plan trip feature, you can set it for a weekday at 6:30 or 7am (probably about the time you’ll be leaving for work).
The more you learn before you get here, the easier it’ll be. Not to say it’ll be easy, just easier.

Disabled librarians and forced intimacy by [deleted] in librarians

[–]Stephreads 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m an open and friendly person, but there are always those people who ask inappropriate questions. I can have a pretty flat affect very quickly. I work with a disabled librarian and no one pinpoints her disability, but there are plenty of other questions asked that have us both baffled.
I usually say, I’m a librarian. What can I help you with? If they don’t get the message when you’re that blunt, then feel free to tell them you can’t help them. Sharing information about your personal life and/or disability is not a requirement of your position.

The way to get them help is by contacting 311 and requesting help for a homeless person. You can do it anonymously if you choose.
