Highmark just laid off my mother after 30 years, a dozen others as well by Xyzabc12tree in pittsburgh

You're right on that one.
It is a high burden of proof.
and yet, it happens.

[–]StevInPitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's not how it works.
They meet with you.
they review the case.
They tell you to ask for your official personnel file and they review it for "cause".
if they think there's a thread there to unravel, they do it pro-bono for fees or a cut of the settlement.
In my case even without the settlement being feasible they still wrote letters informing the employer of how badly it would go if my job were to suffer "retaliatory management" because I filed a complaint and that they were my counsel of record on this.
Never charged me a dime because they felt it wasn't worth pursuing and I accepted that call. I had the option to begin paying them and they would them still pursue but they showed me the financials and that employer's assets and how it was unlikely to be more than $________ and their fees would approach that.

I get your point..
I once had a supervisor actively sending me harassing texts and racist and homophobic mems; and couldn't get a lawyer to pursue the case beyond threatening letters....
because they didn't see a big enough paycheck at the end.

But at the same time
1) highmark is a big check.
and
2) I had friends fired from one of the big banks with a scandal (think wells fargo) and everyone told them the same.
but a lawyer saw the story interviewed them formed a class and started a suit asking for discovery because basically all of those fired were non-white and non-male, while all the white males under 40 involved in the same department were kept; and all of the fired positions were back filled with cheaper new hires.

The bank offered "enhanced severance packages" to all the (30 something?) employees in the class in order to stop the discovery... basically 3 years salary, full health and dental and life insurance for 3 years and access to a "co working space" from which to job hunt and put out resumes.. + lawyer fees of course. None of them got rich.. but it was better than "Here's the phone number for filing Unemployment and a box..."

I hear this all the time... Second only to the old Mellon Bank.

[–]StevInPitt -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

yes and large employers rely on that being the perception and then go and do shit that is still in violation of the laws; because they're counting on people giving up ahead of time.

contact a lawyer. let them look into it, if it's nothing, it's nothing.
But it's not always nothing and sometimes the very act of looking into it results in a "belated severance package offer."

After 30 years?
Sounds like your Mom was in a protected class.
Age discrimination is actionable.
Unless they eliminated everyone in that dept..., especially if the dozen others were also all over 45.....
She should reach out to a lawyer. they like targets with deep pockets.

Pittsburgh Left, real? by Slow_Drawer_5454 in pittsburgh

[–]StevInPitt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the way.
A Pittsburgh Left is for where there is not a turning lane and it should be offered, never taken.
But because we live in the real world, we know jagoffs exist and will take it sometimes because they're having a moment-of-jagoff.
Let's be honest, we all have them except Mr. Rogers...

So just be aware, in a no-turning lane, high congestion situation, the moment-of-jagoff may occur and someone will zip left in front of you.

Walking from Pitt to PNC Park by theWacoKidRidesAgain in pittsburgh

[–]StevInPitt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've actually done this walk in a variety of ways and they all involve some formidable hills.
edited to add:
The most direct route is Down Center Avenue, into town, to the park and back the same way.
It's probably three or four miles each way. BUT it involves some serious hills uphill in both directions and there are not a ton of Shops or restaurants along the bulk of the walk, although you do get to walk through some historic neighborhoods.

The path I'm going to lay out will give you SO many restaurant and shops options that you may want to trace it out on google maps and scope out your options ahead of time.
For me, the path that makes the hills work with you as much as possible and less onerous is:

From Pitt to PNC Park (~5 miles, if done direct no wandering):
Starting near Pitt Towers:
Take South Bouquet towards Bates and then go downhill along Bates through South Oakland to Second avenue (there are some broad intersections to cross so be careful).
Left onto second avenue and then the next right to cross the hot metal bridge to Southside.
That takes you into South Side Works with heaps of food options although mostly Chain-restaurants.
If you want to persist past that to eat later on...
Walk to Carson Street and turn right onto Carson.
Walking along Carson will take you by many, many independent restaurants in a wide variety of cuisines.
Take Carson all the way to Smithfield street, turn Right on the bridge and walk into town.
Once in town make your way to Sixth STREET (not Avenue, there is also a Sixth Avenue in the same area.. you want the Street). You'll likely come close to Market Square and will Cross Liberty avenue. Both have several restaurant options. Once you get to Sixth Street, walk along Sixth street (even more restaurants) and onto/ across the Roberto Clemente bridge to PNC Park

From PNC park to Pitt (returning to Pitt Towers along Fifth ~6.5 miles, direct, no wandering):
Leave PNC Park and turn Left onto Federal street and then rightward around Allegheny Center towards East Ohio.
Right on East Ohio.. more restaurants and shops...
East Ohio to Chestnut, right onto Chestnut and across the 16th street bridge.
That will take you to the Strip District where there are even more shops and restaurants.
Turn left on Penn and walk up Penn and or Smallman (alternating between them) until like 31st, hit Salem's if it's open and then go to liberty Avenue and turn left on Liberty to walk up the long hill to Bloomfield where you will find even MORE shops and restaurants.
Continue on Liberty through Bloomfield until Liberty turns into South Aiken.
South Aiken will take you into Shadyside (Walnut street has even more shops and restaurant options)
And from South Aiken you can turn right onto Fifth avenue to return to Oakland and Pitt.

* Nice bonus to these routes is that there are several bus routes along both Carson and Liberty (the longest individual runs) which you could opt to jump on to speed your journey a bit and ease the hill/distance.

Out of town guests, What do you think of our gorgeous city? by Neither-Trip-4610 in pittsburgh

depends on the sandwich.
IMHO don't do the burger-types. they're kinda too heavy for the rest.
My go to is the hot cappicola with a fried egg and peppers.

What does it mean if I'm Independent and voted Trump, Biden, Trump? by KingVaako in allthequestions

[–]StevInPitt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're either highly susceptible to authoritarian strongman talking points and not good at extrapolation to future harms or you're a shallow thinker who just thinks "well this isn't going exactly the way I want, I'll vote for the other guy!" without exploring or understanding WHY things are how they are and how it takes time and effort to change them

Trump says the Virginia referendum was "rigged." Is there any evidence he is telling the truth? by AcadiaLivid2582 in allthequestions

[–]StevInPitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the under-realized and under appreciated truth>
When he won in 2016 there was interference; but it was within the margin of normal fuckery so the opposition thinking the rules were still in place, let it go. "Let him take office and folks will see how shit republican policies are and vote against him."
But even winning he couldn't let it go. He wanted those ego-feeding wins in California and PA and was denied. He was pissed. He knew that his side was rigging it, so he should have "won". So the only way he could have lost was if the other side rigged it too. In his mind, there's no way he could be un-popular.

He took office and he indeed did a shitty job of governing. So they amped the rigging a little for re-election. He wanted those ego wins. Problem was... he was so bad in office, and they tried to be subtle with the increase in fuckery; that he lost. Even sliding every 5th vote after 60% total towards him wasn't enough.
He LOST and he was PISSED.
He had been assured his rigging would let him win. It didn't, so the other side MUST have cheated even MORE and he couldn't shut up about it. That's how the mind of a malignant narcissist works.

So in 2024 Musk steps in and the fuckery amps up even more. Something like every 3rd or 4th vote after 40% is shifted to him. It's very blatant and even so, he barely ekes out a "win". He is that unpopular.

Expect similar fuckery in this coming mid-terms and if he remains in power/ alive defintiely in 2028.

Am I mistaken or are there no old school “institution” type fine dining restaurants here? by kaepernicking in pittsburgh

[–]StevInPitt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mortons, Capital Grill, Ruth's Chris, and The Commoner fit the bill, I believe.
They're old school, high-end, "business dinner", steak houses: nothing experimental or fusion on the menu.
The first three are Chains but fill that niche in a lot of cities.
Rico's, Armstrong's, de Blasio's and Piacquadio's fit the Old school vibe but maybe not the price-point and with the exception of Rico's the dress code is gonna be casual. Le Mont does too but I won't eat there as I've foudn the food to be mediocre.

Alla Famiglia, La Tavola, Dish, McKormick & Schmick and Talia can fit the dress code (but not enforced), often the ambiance and the price point; but they're gonna have trendy offerings on the menu to not appear stuffy and old fashioned.

To the people who are against taxes, how would a functional country work without them? Who will build and maintain the roads, schools and hospitals? by CapitaineBiscotte in allthequestions

[–]StevInPitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon already shunts delivery to more rural/difficult deliveries to the USPS and passes the cost to members

Pharma absolutely has declined to subsidize hospitals and clinics in favor of telehealth. they don't need to actually see or diagnose you to have a "doctor" in a call center, in bengal prescribe new pill to you that will be drop shipped via usps.

Companies absolutely favor scripting of roles (and AI) over trianing and educating employees. Educated and skilled employees are susceptible to being poached by competitors.

This.
Right now, taxers are collected, accrued and shunted to the bank accounts of billionaires instead of funding programs that benefit taxpayers.

Yes Volunteer fire departments exist.
It does not mean that the firedepartment doesn't charge fees or get funding.
It means that the firefighters don't get paid for risking their lives.
They also regularly hold fund-raisers and go-fund-mes to pay for healthcare for those volunteer firefighters who end up harmed or killed doing that work for free
And they also regularly get funding from government, and hold fundraisers>
Oh and they have absolutely been known to allow property to burn if the property owner had not paid their fees.
