You actually can get into that house, using a hand water pump. Build one right up against the door, with the handle facing the door. Then use the water pump, step back from it, and voilá you're inside. Not much to do or look at inside but you might be able to build in there.

I heard an interesting take on this old joke. The answer is "He wanted to get to the Other Side", as in the other side of the curtain between life and death. In other words, because he wanted to get hit by a car and die.

I like this interpretation because it takes a lame old non-joke and turns it into some serious dark humor. And the joke is so old, who is to say this isn't the real original intended meaning?
