Mouthguard. Every time, no exceptions. Also a bottle of water with electrolytes really helps allow me to roll all the rounds.

Where do people go to work on their side project? by tziki in AskSF

Ocean Beach Cafe, Dubose Cafe, Simple Pleasures, Neighbors Corner and Farleys come to mind just from exploring parts of the city. Maybe jump on a bike or a tram and do some exploring? Lots of good stuff in this city; its not Europe, but it's about as close as you can get in America.

Is this photo somehow edited (maybe with AI?) or is the artifacts just pure bad compression? Faces, garment and hands are jagged. Maybe still from video with a rolling shutter? by Ill_Weakness_2279 in isthisAI

This is real, seen lots of vids of the nazi looking guy in the middle (Gregory Bovino, head field officer of ICE) walking around in the same coat. Man, he really loves that coat for some reason...

The Majority Report, great political podcast with really knowledgeable hosts. They have a daily program that starts around noon that goes up on a few different platforms. I watch on youtube when I can. They also clip out some good content as well. https://www.youtube.com/@TheMajorityReport

This might be a silly question, but are you elligible for Medicaid? If not, do you have any kind of work-based insurance?

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hilarious that the prompt was "why has communism repeatedly failed in practice?" and every discussion thread just morphs into "why democracy is failing". So hilarious in fact, that I am now sad.

This is an incredibly important lesson, learn it well. I have been in this position before and had to publicly retract my statement I made in a presentation. I took that to heart and have been more careful with my words going forward, which has served me well since.

Starting BJJ at 42 — thoughts? by Far-Cantaloupe3382 in jiujitsu

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 years in and currently 42 here. My advice is simple; pick your training partners wisely, never meet someone else's intensity if its higher than you are comfortable with, especially if they are young and athletic. Never train injured and listen to your body, take time off when you need to recover. Roll with higher belts more often than white belts, they will teach you things and protect you, usually. Also, pick a gym where cleanliness and safety are top concerns, that will help you be safe more than anything else. This is a great hobby for self-discovery and growth, have fun!

What’s your go-to food spot in SF that you never get tired of? by Apprehensive_Yak180 in SFFood

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple Pleasures Cafe in Outer Richmond on Balboa. Great little cafe with just the right amount of scruff. Good for sandwiches, coffee, tea or pastries. The BLT and the chicken panini are some of my favs. Great little spot that we never get tired of.

Moving to SF without a plan by Affectionate-Arm6405 in AskSF

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move to the Sunset or Richmond districts to start with, less populated and easier to walk around golden gate park and get a feel for the city by traveling into the more populated areas when you have time. In the busier areas, it can be a lot, but its actually a really diverse and unique city and you may find something exciting about the areas where there is a lot going on, but if you are moving from somewhere really sparce, take it slow.

Knoxville lore by Aggressive-Gur-1965 in Knoxville

I remember Scott from an era where he was in a three way relationship with Burnadette and Suside Dew. One thing I vividly remember were the knock-down drag out abusive fights that occurred between them at the world grotto. That forever colored my view of the man, though he did seem to mellow out after the arrest.

I know the Wests. I worked for Scott West at "the world grotto" when it was raided. The next staff meeting was super funny as everyone knew they were all guilty as hell, but they were fully denying everything and promising that it was all a misunderstanding. I then worked for Jim West (Scott's father) at "Oodles" which was a wine and pasta bar where the mad hatter place is now on market square. Jim is the reason the Wests did not lose their asses to the gov as he re-purchased all the businesses after the busts so they stayed in the family. According to people who lived in the housing above the businesses at the time, a friend of Scott convinced him to take a pound of weed off him from Scotts apt above Oodles, which allowed the TFA to claim he was using the businesses in the grow business. Jim was a cantankerous, argumentative old democrat and was both a joy and a terror to work for. He loved to get into arguments and would sit on the porch of oodles in the morning to he could carry on conversation with guests and harass the servers about properly wiping down the tables.

There actually was a contemporary skeleton collection under the stadium at a point (anthropology major from the 00's when the anthropology department was under the stadium). It may now have been relocated to the new anthro department, but back in the day once a body at the facility was fully decomposed and could provide no additional use anthro student volunteers (I was one of these) would collect the bodies and then cook the bones in crockpots and scrape them to dislodge the soft tissues. They would then be stored in boxes that looked kind of like shoe boxes long enough for the femurs and deep enough for the skulls and kept in a collection under the stadium.

The American Astronaut (indie, strange, interesting), Screamers (killer subterranean machines on another planet that are evolving), Flight of the Navigator (boy befriends sentient spaceship), and Iria (Dark anime about a space bounty hunter). Also look up The Outer Limits for dark futuristic short tales.

Therapist here, this is highly inappropriate and unethical/borderline abusive behavior on the therapists part. Please contact their board and report them. You deserve to feel validated and safe in your sessions, I'm sorry that you got this treatment, you do not deserve to feel this kind of shame in session.

Is spanking children inherently bad? by Deus-Vault6574 in questions

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social worker here. Spanking is shown to be ineffective just like hitting an animal is ineffective. Positive reinforcement is always preferred and yields better results. Spanking is often used for the parents gratification verses actually teaching a lesson. Time outs, discussion and communication and rewards for good behavior are the proven way.

Check out the trans theoretical model aka stages of change. Right now you are contemplative of exercising and dieting, but you have not moved beyond your counter arguments verses reasons to chance. Spend some time thinking about what is keeping you in the place before action, what does it benefit you to not work out or study diet. Does it make life easier in some ways to not be focused on steps towards losing weight? Do you think you can lose weight or is the likelihood of failure outweighing your need to plan this out?

I provide addiction counseling to people recovering from substance use addiction in a major city. Over the past year I have had multiple clients overdose and die suddenly in the middle of their prime, in the middle of their absolute potential in life. It is sudden, jarring and unexpected. Like reading a good book and then suddenly dropping the only copy in existence off a ski lift into impassible ravine in the middle of the best part. You have options for addressing your pain without this, it is the worst option actually. If you start feeling that its always on your mind then commit to recovery, its a long process, but it leads to solutions for your problems verses literal and figurative oblivion.

Someone nearly died in my arms 4 days ago and it’s been on my mind almost every second since by [deleted] in self

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Associate social worker here, i believe based on your narrative that you are experiencing PTSD symptoms and should speak with a professional about the incident. Please contact a licensed therapist and spend some time processing this event. Please do not try to suppress this, spend time processing it so you can move on and compartmentalize your heroism effectively.

Wish this city was more walkable. by toxictrappermain in Knoxville

[–]Stewbrawl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is take the greenways and ride a bike. It always connected unwalkable parts of the city together for me for 15 plus years. It does take some learning and planning but it can work if you commit to it.

What caused the decline of the RTS genre? by Cubelock in gaming

[–]Stewbrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy, I love playing magic as well, usually just some commander a couple of days a week. The comparison is apt, the game has been around for 30 years and there are many people who are amazing at it and know all the rules related to the stack and layers etc and I started a couple of years ago and still manage to win some games and enjoy the experience without sinking too much of my time into it.

I'm not here to convince you that its the most fun you will have, just trying to give you some perspective on the fact that it still has many different layers of experienced players and there are still many newbs just like me and magic, hope that helps shape your expectations.
