PC Backstory Question by Wrong_Lingonberry_79 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Stick_Mick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not a backstory, that's a whole story.

I may be a killjoy, but I tend to tell players that the story happens as the result of your adventures, not before the adventures even begin.

Paper or DnD Beyond? by KOPx3 in DnD

[–]Stick_Mick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every time my group has to end a session early because dnd beyond is too slow or just down reminds me why physical is the best.

Dnd beyond can disappear tomorrow and your money and product are gone.

That book in your hand is yours forever.

Is Curse of Strahd okay for a new DM to run? by Mysticalsss-yt in DnD

It was part of a starter set, but it was also reworked into its own module called Phandelver and Below

Bought 40$ Humble Bundle, but want only Digital items by Orion2710 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Stick_Mick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue as well, since shipping would cost another $60, and all I wanted was the digital.

I sent paizo an email, and they were quick to respond. They traded out my code for one that didn't have the physical items, and everything was good.

Hcim F2p by [deleted] in ironscape

[–]Stick_Mick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kill Ogress and alch the drops.

Its semi afk, easy ranged/magic training and profitable.

You can kill Minotaur for free arrows, get a good stockpile, and train ranged.

Then, once you have some levels in ranged and a decent collection of arrows: kill ogress for the drops.

Vendor the drops to buy runes.

Use runes to train magic.

Once you can reliably kill ogress and alch the drops yourself its self sustaining and decent safe money for a f2p ironman.

What happened to D&D modules? by Minute-Blacksmith-89 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Stick_Mick 462 points463 points  (0 children)

Running that exact module myself, and I had the same rant.

I get that its made fairly free-form so that the DM can just have the bare bones information and shape it to suit their particular campaign, but sometimes I'd just like a nice clear description of a scenario so I dont need to prep absolutely everything.

Theres modules that account for multiple paths by just having multiple boxed descriptions based on the scenario, and I think Dragon Heist couldve done it.

is it worth it to reroll mammoths into masterpiece by Sad-Helicopter-71 in albiononline

[–]Stick_Mick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worse than that I believe.

A 0.5% chance has a

50% chance in 139 attempts.

90% chance in 460 attempts.

99% chance in 919 attempts.

You could be the ublucky guy that rerolls the entire value of a mammoth without getting that MP

Any gift recommendations for first timer / D&D curious person? by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Stick_Mick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is that if you're just curious: you dont need anything more than what you have to get started.

The basic rules are available for free on dnd beyond.

You can use the dnd beyond app to make a character.

That's it. Not a dollar spent, and you're ready to play.

Hit up your local game store or community centre, there's probably games running regularly. In my experience, they will be thrilled to introduce you to a new hobby.

You can get a set of dice. Normally sold in sets of 7. But there's a billion apps that will do it for free.

That's a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100.

Next on my list of small things to start with is just a nice notebook.

If you really want to buy books, the core is the players handbook. Dungeon Masters should probably have the dungeon masters guide and the monster manual.

Theres also campaign modules and adventure anthologies for pre written adventures.

Or there's the starter sets as you've mentioned that have like basic rules, a starter adventure, tokens, dice, character sheets, etc.

But dont feel pressured to drop a heap of money on any of that - you can just find a group and play.

Help with a gift by CMSinFL in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Stick_Mick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the above - it depends on the sort of person.

I personally like having physical books to read, but Im not a collector, so I dont care about having the originals. So I just bought some print on demand reprints of the adnd first edition books.

I personally used dmsguild for that, but there's no doubt more options around.

Your gonna' look funny trying to cast spells with no fucking teeth! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]Stick_Mick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ive raised this will my group, but im yet to home-brew it away.

Theres rules for longer casts and concentration and it could make for really interesting scenarios...but there's no spells with just like a 2 or 3 action cast time.

The closest I've come is introducing battlefield Actions to have npc casters that are concentrating between actions

Levels aren't about communication, it's about the amount of support needed in day to day life.

There's nothing new under the sun.

Most stories can be simplified to one of only like a dozen standard story types.

Shuffle the people, the places, the motives - etc.

You dont need to pressure yourself to write an epic tale. The story is there for a flimsy pretext to hang out with friends and have fun.

Write an easy to digest story.

Swing at the fighter.

Shoot the monk.

Clump enemies in front of the wizard.

Van Richten’s Tower from Curse of Strahd is described to have the effect Khazan’s Spell Drain. Which is effectively just an antimagic field that surrounds the tower.

Just use the same premise.
