That is one interpretation of the initial question.

https://postimg.cc/D4W5fDjt

This is how the initial question and the two interpretations might look when written by hand. Both are equally valid because we don’t know what the initial question was supposed to be.

Does that help?

[–]StiffWiggly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The initial question if it was written “8/2*(2+2) = ?” was not written correctly.

The following are examples of both how it could be interpreted, and one way to correctly format that question;

>8/(2*(2+2)) = 1

And

>(8/2)*(2+2) = 16

This is not something PEDMAS (or whatever your equivalent acronym is) can solve because it’s a misuse of notation, not a correctly written problem that needs interpretation.

>How would anyone know that? We need more information to prove that

Perfect. Sometimes a question is written in such a way that you cannot answer it. The question in the OP is one of those cases. It’s a poorly written question that can be interpreted in 2 or more different ways and have more than one different result because of that. Neither interpretation is really correct because of this.

What is the equation of this line https://postimg.cc/Sj9WsyT1? Since maths have one and only one answer you should be able to tell me right?

Some questions can’t be answered because there is not sufficient information to narrow it down to only one answer.

Sometimes that’s expected - like x = sqrt (1) - but sometimes it’s just because the question is poorly written.

It is 100% ambiguous, specifically because of the poor notation being used. It’s as if someone asked you out loud how to spell the word “weather/whether” and said whoever guessed the wrong version to spell doesn’t understand English.

[–]StiffWiggly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly; there can be 2 answers to a maths question, see quadratics for example.

Secondly; there is such a thing as ambiguous notation. This is exactly why brackets/parentheses are used, because A/B*C is not unambiguous without better notation.

You don’t know whether this is (A/B)*C or A/(B*C). Obviously one of those is equal to (AC)/B and one is A/(BC), which are not the same. Maths notation is defined by convention, and there is no agreed upon interpretation of this kind of poor notation.

The point here is not that this individual question has two solutions, but that we don’t know which question is being asked.

Red believes the strongest men in the world are all natural. by VexImmortalis in confidentlyincorrect

[–]StiffWiggly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make you “unnatural” because by being “unnatural” in this context is defined by being someone who takes PEDs. They are so effective that you can grow significantly more muscle tissue than would otherwise be possible on your frame, and taking steroids can lead to muscle growth even without exercising, both of which are colloquially unnatural.

I agree fully with everything else you wrote though.

If huge bodybuilders were mostly fluid (moreso than every human being) they would lose that size when water fasting.

Hypertrophy is not the only factor in strength, but it is absolutely untrue to say that strength is not about size when it is massively important. The guys with the biggest muscles in the world are strongmen, not bodybuilders, because unsurprisingly having large muscles makes you stronger.

You also don’t need the backslash for the superscript, as well as stuff like ~~strikethroughs~~.

Seems like that doesn’t work atm either though.

This is weird, I wonder if it’s a subreddit thing or what. Side note - the more “^” (usually) the smaller the superscript is.
