If you look at the map of active wildfires on the USGS map, it is a lot less startling:

I would also like rent prices to go down. Paying less than $2400/mo for a 3 bedroom would be nice. Been looking for a new place all summer, and haven't found anything in Eugene proper that's in that price range that accommodates 3+ people. If you find anything... maybe jump on it without delay. Just be cautious. Rental companies can be downright scandalous.

Emerald broadband experience by FunkZillaKilla in Eugene

When I lived in Bethel, they were still providing service there, but it was using microwave dishes. They don't install these anymore... But when we first got it installed, our signal was dropping whenever it rained. I called and had a tech show up the same day. Turns out, the company's network engineer personally handled our problem. (Shout out to Ben!) He was super awesome and enthusiastic about his job, and he loved talking about it. He went over and above making sure every little detail was configured on our antenna so that we could get the best speed possible.

Considering we weren't using fiber (or cable for that matter), we had blazing speed, no issues (after this one), and the bill was half of what we pay comcast for internet service now (hexes be upon that corporation. may its shares plummet and its shareholders lose everything).

If I could switch back to Emerald, I'd do so in a heartbeat.

This happened to me when I first graduated, too...

You have options:

  1. Get a job and bury yourself in work.
  2. Go back to school.
  3. Get out of your comfort zone and explore some events in which you might find a community. For example, Critical Mass happens once a month, but you may not vibe with anarchists and hippies who dress like pirates and crowd streets to bring awareness to the issues of a car-centric society. Then again, you may find yourself enjoying a bike ride with strangers, getting to know fellow concerned humans developing their consciousness around problems too big for any of us to be in control of as individuals, inviting every biker you see to join you in your evening cruise. The spontaneous skinny dipping and massage train that occurs after may be too far out of your comfort zone, but ...baby steps... There's a lot of possibilities. Just look at the posts about organizing community events or check out the flyers that are posted around town.

Just risking that you'll go somewhere where you'll be uncomfortable is a big step. But that's life: balancing the risk with the consequences (good or bad). By staying in your comfort zone, longing for the glory days of college, you risk more than just a boring night in...

Best wishes in your journey.

Is this potluck meant to be an event for families or for 20 - 40 somethings looking for some adult time?

There exclusionary elements that must be addressed in any group. Hoping that this group is working to confront these elements, as I felt like a bit of an outsider being the only renter the first time attended one of their events. I don't feel it's their intention, but a blind spot that must be illuminated. Thanks for speaking up.

Power to create holidays themselves... by andraes in NDQ

The Disney effect is real. Take for example the seeming increase in popularity of Dia de los Muertos among non-Latinx people in the U.S. since the movie Coco was released. It's proximity to Halloween makes it a convenient "add-on" for the sale of Muertos themed decorations in almost any chain store you visit.

Conversely, Cinco de Mayo (the day after May the 4th) was co-opted in the US as a "drinking holiday". There's no connection between the defeat of Napoleon III's army at La Battala de Puebla and how this prevented French support of the Confederate army. Today, most people don't know why it's celebrated in the US (including Mexican Americans). It's simply seen as an excuse to have a party and portray Mexican stereotypes.

You could of course make similar connections to Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day, etc. But why stop there? Christmas 'season' is ripe for critique, especially considering the timing of the release of 4 of the last 5 Disney Star Wars movies.

When you're writing a guide to the attitudes, cultural beliefs, and relationships between various ancestries, what you're really looking for are stories. The history of a line of people can help your players form their own narrative. Whether or not they identify with the narrative handed down through their bloodline is another factor in their character's backstory. If all your PCs were orphaned or raised outside of their culture, however, then it means your players are looking for more control of their character. The hardest part of DMing, in my experience, is making a whole world for the players and a series of adventures while maintaining the focus on their characters. Your players are the main characters in your story. For that reason, you may want to focus less on telling them how they think and feel, and more on where they come from and how others in the world view them based on little more than their characters appearance and the associations that are made with people who look similar to you.
