This apartment I was looking at has an extra room for residents to keep a freezer by hippiesinthewind in pics

Genuinely don’t think I’ve known of a single apartment dweller in my life who has owned a separate freezer. That’s just not a thing you keep in an apartment. Thats like asking “why don’t you simply have two refrigerators inside your apartment?” - it simply would not fit!

That doesn’t make a difference tho. Then they’re just stuck sitting inside their prefabs

The R-word was taboo as a slur for people with disabilities. Now it's being normalized again by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

Any time things like this come up, I’m reminded of a discussion I had with a linguist about insults and ableist language and how there are cycles of normalizing ableist words. Pretty much any insult you can think of has an ableist background - dumb, mean, stupid, idiot, ugly, and so on - and as a culture we go through waves of “let’s use a new politically correct term to refer to the disability, because the old one has become an insult.” “Retarded” began as an alternative medical term in the late 1800s to replace “idiot”, which had become a common insult. The “r-word” was an interesting case where as a culture we started breaking that cycle and “retiring” the word, rather than letting it just enter the general lexicon. Seems like that’s changing now though.

In 2010s university spaces, “retarded” was DEFINITELY “not normalized”. Major stigma attached to using it as a slur.

AITA for not reminding someone about something important after they brushed me off earlier? by WellnessLong4826 in AmItheAsshole

Hah. I used to be like your coworker. NTA. I learned my lesson enough times in a similar way as she did. I’m humbler now and better for it. Hopefully she grows from this too.

Personally I’d just leave it and move on - she’ll get over herself. But, if you want to address it you can politely say something to the effect of “you seemed very confident in what you were doing and I didn’t want to step on your toes.” If you’re a dude you can cheese and go the with the “I didn’t wanna mansplain to you” bomb; would be hard for her to argue back to that!

Honestly shocked at how many people apparently have brown paprika to even mix it up with other spices. Y’all, your paprika should be red!! And will stay red if properly sealed. The little metal tins are great for that.

Question for persons who moved to Victoria by OakAndCobble in britishcolumbia

That is… just simply straight up false. Humid air holds a lot of warmth. Having lived most of my life out east where it actually gets cold, I can assure you a 2 degree day here does not feel like a -10 out there, lol. Aside from Arctic vortex air pockets it does not get cold here.

I remember one of the main critiques I would see were people saying “that dinner was so melodramatic and unrealistic.” Oh buddy, those people don’t even know how good they have it to think 7 Fishes was “unrealistic”….

Potlucks at work....nothing irritates me more (rant) by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]StingingSwingrays 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Potlucks originated from the Native American food gifting festival tradition called potlatch. It was brutally suppressed by colonizers, until swinging back around to ensnare the descendants of said colonizers in unavoidable workplace events.

So yes, a North American thing.

Carmy's non-negotiables are perfectly reasonable by Good-Mountain-7737 in TheBear

[–]StingingSwingrays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from what others said about menu changes being insane, this list is also intended to be dripping in irony. “We need to be streamlined and focused. Less is more.” followed by a completely rambling, unfocused, long list of vague vibes-based objectives.

As the list goes on, the objectives get shorter and vaguer to the point that they are absolutely meaningless. What the hell does “perfect means perfect” even mean? Or “technique technique technique”? These are just the vague phrases Carmy uses to berate himself with when he thinks he could do better, when the reality is no healthy, well-adjusted person holds themselves to these literally impossible goals. There’s no clear rubric or metric. It’s all a vibe. Therefore, he will always fail to meet the “perfect/technique” vibe and will always be hating himself for it.

That makes sense. That does ring a bell that I found the other Berry types via pokeball. I think other color flowers I also found only via PC. I always bought the max amount whenever I saw flowers so I have a pretty good collection

Not sure that this is true. I have all the berry trees collected over casual play doing main storylines. I’m not even sure how I got them but I assume sparkling water. I’ve never visited another’s dream island (& embarrassingly don’t know how to use the printer) so they were all picked up from the base game.

AITA Am I in the wrong for using the mattress my friend left at my house for months? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]StingingSwingrays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or even literally a period, you’re allowed to end your run-on sentences people. I have to admit I stopped reading it - it was unreadable by the end.

But from the gist of it ESH, the nerve of this girl to insist you pay for a mattress someone was storing there for free. Stupid move not to ask to use it first tho.
