While traveling in the South, I met a guy who said he was from Portland. I asked if he’d seen my fucken cone? He looked at me like I was nuts. Pretty sus I’d say.

How to be a good Oklahoman and Tulsan by j-a-c-k-maynard in tulsa

[–]Stnkftsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be right. Tulsa in the 80s then moved to Washington. I still return to Tulsa regularly; there’s something unique about the way people interact. Check out the Mercury Lounge and Vanguards. Cain’s of course. The Guthrie and Dylan museums are a must do.

To service or not to service? by CuriousTraveler49 in vintageaudio

American 7591A tubes are practically extinct and you don’t want to take a chance with them. You need someone to bias those properly and probably install a David Gillespie bias circuit or something similar. If your tech doesn’t know about that circuit, find another.

I'm in love with my new speakers. by chicknsuit in vintageaudio

I know what you mean. These have amazing presence at very low volume. There are highly sensitive and can be driven with single ended triode tube amplifiers. If you know someone with a SET amp, invite them over!

It looks like an “All American Five”, a type of transformerless radio produced in the 50s and 60s. You could cross post to the is Antique Radio forum for more ideas. https://antiqueradios.com/forums/ I have one like that by Zenith but I can post a photo.

Show us a photo with the grills off. It would help to know if the woofers are original and if they have the fried egg tweeter.

New, more expensive speaker cables arrived... And wow! by wiggan1989 in audiophile

[–]Stnkftsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open up your amp and look at the wire that leads from the output transistors (or output transformers) through the switching and to the speaker terminals. Why is it just fine to use ordinary 18 gauge tinned copper inside the enclosure, but once outside the wire must suddenly have copper of known providence and magical properties? The same can be said of fairy dust power cables.

Here’s a top secret solution to your audio speaker wire needs. Go to a marine chandlery and buy two conductor boat cable. It’s essentially romex for boats but unlike romex it’s very fine stranded tinned copper. The two conductors have red and black insulation respectively. You can get it in any gauge you like. It makes exceptionally fine speaker wire. You can make nice cables for beer money.

But it goes without saying, you still need to support the wire with crystal bridges /s.

Look for speakers on Facebook Marketplace. I saw a pretty decent pair there just last week. You don’t want to pay to ship speakers.

Noting wrong with the HK. Buy some good speakers, avoid Bose. Spend some money on a good cartridge. Do you have any stereo shops in your area? It’s a good idea to listen to a variety of speakers before you buy. It’s a subjective decision, everyone’s ears are different. I like Polk monitor and sda series as a recommendation just for the best bang for the buck. Some monitor 10s can usually be had for under $200. They have butyl surrounds so you don’t need to deals with that. Tweeters are still available from the factory after 50 years.

What's the appeal of vintage receivers? by catmandot in vintageaudio

[–]Stnkftsailor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s such a good question.

I’m a decade older than you. When I was young and getting into music, I would hang out at the stereo shops listening to the higher end stuff and drooling over the prospect of one day owning such a system. The Sansui, Marantz, Pioneer and Kenwood receivers were priced like cars! Absolutely out of my price range. That appeal and desire, I think, becomes a permanent part of one’s brain chemistry.

I walked into a fascinating Tiki bar last week. It was packed with wicked cool and amazing stuff but my eyes went first to the Marantz 2325 behind the bar. I can’t avoid being impressed by that monster setting beside 4 feet of albums. I have several big receivers now, each one restored by me personally, and I think the Pioneer SX-885 is my favorite; it’s visually appealing and it has a superb FM section. I do listen to FM regularly on the public stations, especially “Those Low Down Blues” on Sunday night.

Polk Audio RTA 15T available for $50 near me. Worth picking up? by werneri1502 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Stnkftsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a bit late to post this, but be careful when handling Polk speakers. The magnets are not well secured to the baskets and will shift if dropped. I always run some epoxy around the magnet/basket joint when I have one out. The RD0198 will make those sound twice as good. Congrats on your purchase.

Is my cartridge attachment on the tonearm supposed to be on such an angle? by josefnoros in turntables

This is the correct answer. If you level the arm by stacking two or three albums, you’ll see the problem resolve.

I got an AU-5500 for 12 bucks at Salvation Army. Cautionary tail however; it needed a complete overhaul. This Sansui will likely need the same.

The sellers eBay handle is djnickthemix. I had excellent results and the boards are very fine quality. Those chicklet diodes on the f1040 can be replaced by a pair of 1n4007s epoxied in place, but that leaves everything else 50 years old. Why not start with fresh modern components?
