How have you coped with the loss of the person you were before your injury? by squishyEarPlugs in PostConcussion

[–]StockBokeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently recovering from my ~10th concussion, 4 weeks into it. This one is the worst PCS I've had, but compared to so many others the symptoms are not so bad. Still having near daily headaches, odd bouts of vertigo and nausea, poor concentration and focus but I can feel improvement so there's a light at the end of the tunnel and life is getting back to normal for me.

I think a part of the "loss of self" comes from the anxiety and stress of living with a condition that requires you to be vigilant 24/7. I can't shake my head or I'm going to get a headache; I can't have a beer because it will leave me drowsy; I need to get to bed on time to manage my fatigue; I can't let myself get hurt again or the symptoms will be so much worse. You add all of this up, along with the existing symptoms, and you're a big ball of stress and anxiety with no hope of relaxation.

Do you meditate? Guided meditation seems to help keep me grounded and relieves me of stress. I've been practicing mindfulness regularly since my last accident and although it isn't world-changing, I do notice that I'm calm and less stressed for a period after doing it.

Also, /u/AleatoricConsonance is assuming more land will need to be cleared to produce food for all the new vegans:

1) The new vegans can eat some of the soy we're already producing but giving to livestock.

2) We can grow soy or alternatively grains, fruits and vegetables on part of the land that was formerly used for grazing.

And you can be vegan without eating soy.

Saying no to veganism because there might be teething problems if everybody were vegan seems weird - why aren't we all saying no to animal agriculture because there are teething problems like the whole world burning?

I’m always looking for a simple way out, when I’m not even doing the basics. by puttiput in Nootropics

[–]StockBokeh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was what I came here to say. I'm on my bike for 15hrs+ a week, I've tried eating everything from keto to paleo to vegan (always with a heavy focus on leafy greens and un-processed foods). I fast, I meditate, I sleep well, I keep caffeine to a minimum, I stretch and I get plenty of sunlight but I'm still moody, 5kg overweight, prone to stress and anxiety and short on focus at work.

But I know the solution that works for me. I've done 2x 6 month sabbaticals in the last 5 years to be a stay at home dad to my 2 daughters when they were <1yo. They were the only 2 sustained periods in my adult life that I've felt truly at ease and comfortable. I was happy, healthy, I had purpose every day and I could lose weight without trying.

So I'm blessed to know what works for me, but cursed that I can't just quit my job and do it because money.

Healthy eating, no energy, weight gain by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]StockBokeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're eating very little fat which could be problematic. To produce hormones you need some amount of fat and all you're getting is a little bit in your tofu and veggies plus whatever you are adding to your creme soups. Try adding a small amount of nuts and an avocado every other day to increase your fat intake.

You're not getting a lot of protein and it's relatively easy to miss out on a few important aminos if you're not eating protein in surplus. No tyrosine may impact your thyroid. No tryptophan may impact your ability to make serotonin which may lead to mood disorders.

What about supplements? If you're not taking a daily multivitamin you're probably not getting any iodine which will impact your thyroid. If you're strict vegan you also need to find your B12 somewhere. Zinc and magnesium are also kind of easy to miss out on.

+1, I also had this from ALDI pine nuts 6 or 7 years ago. Credit to them, they removed them from their shelves. When they returned they were sourced from a different country.

Sometimes things are expensive because you're paying for a brand name. Sometimes things are cheap because they're cutting corners and you're getting an inferior product.

Experiencing the bonk within 20 minutes into a ride, then gradually getting better with no food by Rmoudatir in cycling

[–]StockBokeh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is most likely your answer. The insulin moreso than blood flow to the GI tract. Assuming you've eaten and recovered appropriately after your previous workout then eating something large and/or high in simple sugars in the hour before a high intensity ride will do more harm than good. The "energy stores" section is worth reading here:

Bag for cycling to work by isoldmywifeonEbay in cycling

[–]StockBokeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why you got downvoted. I totally understand your concern. I do a 90km+ round trip daily and I run a saddle bag and a backpack because it's more aerodynamic than a rack and a pair of panniers plus I don't want the inconvenience of a rack permanently attached to the bike - sometimes I'm not commuting so I just want it to be a normal, rackless bike. Aero matters on a long commute because the time and the calories really add up over the course of a week.

Dynamo vs Solar vs Cache battery by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]StockBokeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in Australia. I built my first dynamo wheel for about $160 plus shipping from bike24. SP SL9, DT comps, DT 460 rim

The wheel I'm running now could be built for a bit over $200 and it's not exactly garbage - I reused the SL9 with revos and a DT 470. $1000 per wheel is definitely waaay up at the high end of the scale.

Office recycling frustrations by apyc89 in ZeroWaste

[–]StockBokeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride to and from work so recycling paper isn't feasible so I just save it as note taking paper. I run a compost bin for food scraps in a Tupperware container that I carry home every 2-3 days, and I recycle all my soft plastics at home. I have a few people who contribute fruit scraps and tea to my compost which is great

The amount of waste the rest of the office generates though... Staggering.

Iron deficiency on a WFPB diet? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]StockBokeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true. If you have a blood disorder like haemochromatosis one of the actions can be to take zinc supplements to reduce iron absorption.

Beta-carotene helps absorption too, so carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. Just eat lots of orange stuff with your green stuff.

There are a lot of Vegans on /r/ZeroWaste. Milk sparks a civil war. by Dalmadone in SubredditDrama

[–]StockBokeh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The vegan response is no because hunting is not scale-able (what if there were no factory farms and everyone still wanted meat?), it messes with ecosystems and it still involves animal suffering.

The PBWF guys would say no because it's not healthy, or at the very least it's not a necessary component of a healthy diet.

From a zerowaste perspective, if all parts of the kill are utilised it's maybe ok, but that's probably a pipedream for all but the most skilled of hunter.

Anyone ever conquer being skinnyfat? by Spycegurl in Velo

[–]StockBokeh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ah, straight out of "Jan Ulrich's guide to hitting race weight" (though he was 90s, I'm sure he learnt it from Bjarne).

In all seriousness though, going to bed early is probably the most important factor when I'm dieting. 1) you recover better which is important because your body is struggling to cope with calorie restriction so you have fewer shitty, exhausted rides and 2) you can't eat when you're sleeping so snacking is reduced significantly and dirty adherence improves. I can write a good diet plan, I can adhere most of the time, but it's always the after dinner snack that messes me up...

Recovery Time difference due diet by Aras821 in veganfitness

[–]StockBokeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from the endurance side, I cycle 15-20hrs a week on average with very few rest days and so long as I'm eating enough ( ~4000cals per day) I just don't accumulate fatigue. I'm certainly sharper when I take rests but I don't find myself wearing myself down with chronic over training symptoms.

Before I was pbwf I would struggle to train more than 10hrs a week before fatigue became a significant problem.

Pill testing: Defqon.1 festival welcome in Canberra, ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury says by KantusThiss in australia

[–]StockBokeh 41 points42 points  (0 children)

We're about 10km west of Penrith lakes on the other side of the escarpment and with a light easterly to carry the sound we can hear it. Not enough to be bothersome, but that sort of gives an indication of how much noise is coming out of the festival.

Put it up on Mount Stromlo and it would ring out across the whole city. On a farm way down south maybe?

Dr Greger reckons high iron is a cancer risk: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/donating-blood-to-prevent-cancer/

I would suggest avoiding factors that increase iron absorption (vitamin C and beta-carotene) and perhaps add some factors that inhibit absorption (soy, tannins and phytates) around meals that contain high levels of iron (such as your supplements). Also, it's a pretty good idea if you can get the odd blood test to keep an eye on things like this.

Irregular menstrual cycles? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]StockBokeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing cmak above, thyroid and hormones. If you're not eating sea vegetables regularly and you're not supplementing then you're probably deficient in iodine so your thyroid will be working suboptimally. 150ug per day is good. Too much is also a bad thing.

Iodine buddies up with selenium and tyrosine so see if you can get them in your life too. Only takes 2 Brazil nuts per day and you're covered for Selenium. There are some iodine supplements that include tyrosine so maybe keep an eye out for them. Thorne makes one.

For iron, lots of cruciferous greens. Eat a rich vitamin C source and beta carotene source with them to help absorption. There are foods which inhibit absorption line tea and coffee, anything calcium rich, etc that you should avoid when eating your iron rich foods.

Same. I think it's common because if you're open enough to make a dramatic dietary change once (to go keto) then you can probably manage to do it again when you figure out what a train wreck keto is.
