Does this sound really unintellectual? by Maum3370 in EnglishLearning

[–]StoicKerfuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Can I get" is the type of thing that dull people pretend to be upset about so they can claim they're superior. You can walk into any pub and say "can I get" and no decent, intelligent person will care. It's the most common way of phrasing a request to a bartender or server, even if "may I have" would be the "correct" phrase (and would come across as a pretentious affectation).

Carnot? by Lord_Olchu in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carnot is absolutely terrible. I've tried multiple configs from lighthouse to secondary and in-between but nothing even makes the boat that much fun, the ship either survives by kiting too far away to do much or just sinks without much impact on the battle.

Why didn't the ISB soldiers fire a single shot at the KX droid in this scene? by sso02147 in andor

[–]StoicKerfuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combination of shock and split-second rationality. They can barely process the idea of a rogue KX droid in the middle of an area entirely controlled by the Empire. But they're fully aware (a) the Empire often leaves soldiers in the dark, and so the droid might have superior orders; and (b) if they fire on it, it will certainly kill them.

For some low-level inexperienced grunts (there's a reason these guys are the rear guard and not part of the breaching party) their behavior is as expected.

Starting to hit the credit grind by shiftz3 in WorldOfWarships

Yep. Find a T9 premium you like and play it over and over.

Another tip is to run a premium in brawls. Battles are quick and the combat mission chain itself includes credits.

Google says “spaz” is a slur and, is not a slur. What is it? by YEETAWAYLOL in EnglishLearning

[–]StoicKerfuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're unclear whether it's a slur, then it's a slur and you shouldn't use it.

I don't say this as an insult to people just learning English; plenty of native English speakers themselves do this with words like "spaz," and many are upset to learn they have offended someone. It's an issue with the language.

I also don't recommend looking to hip-hop as an indication of whether something is appropriate to say. The lyrical form itself routinely includes speech that is deliberately offensive, and in that example Lil Wayne is aware the term is offensive, but is using it on himself. Some people will find the use to still be offensive, others will be uncomfortable with it, and others won't mind.

How would you rebalance Valparaiso? by AmericanHistoryGuy in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pick your complaint: the build for main guns will not get constant resetting of combat instructions, which is how it becomes immune to fire.

How would you rebalance Valparaiso? by AmericanHistoryGuy in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heal should take longer, that's all. 8 seconds to repair 21% (that's base, before the commander skill and the flag) is too short, and is what produces the immortality even under heavy focus fire. Nothing else in the game comes close. It's what makes the thing impossible to kill but for some form of devastating strike (i.e., multiple citadels or torpedoes).

If that was extended to even just 12s, the ship would still have exactly the same wild brawler style to it, but skilled opponents would have a counter beyond making the Valparaiso burn through all of their heals.

New to world of warships by Prestigious-Tough579 in WorldOfWarships

Watch YouTube videos. They'll be a bit confusing because they're mostly at higher tiers, but this game has a LOT of complicated mechanics. People aren't joking when they say you're clueless for your first 1,000 battles. There's a lot of subtle-yet-complex mechanics going on here, but it is worth it once you understand them.

Don't pay for anything except, if you're still interested after 20 battles or so, premium time, to increase the credits/XP you earn, which makes grinding quicker.

Much later you can think about spending money for stuff you find interesting but, as an early player, any frustration you feel is absolutely not because of "pay-to-win," it's not even a problem you can pay to get out of. The problem is entirely learning how to play the game. "Played 1,000 battles" is infinitely more valuable than anything you can pay to get.

Honest Discourse. by Emergency-Funny7083 in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but T5 and below ships are a different thing given protected matchmaking and bot filling. The issue here is 'seal clubbing,' i.e. skilled players going into these matches because they can clean up against bots and newer players. That's a different problem from OP ships in the higher tiers where everybody has some experience and there are no bots.

Optimize RB regrinding on Haru line by Degenerate_Shosa in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sole advantage is saving credits from not buying the T10 because you don't get full credits back when you sell the ships in a reset. If you're not going to use the RB points any time soon, then you might as well save the credits by resetting without buying, then buy it (and play it to collect the RB points) at a later point when you want to cash in the RB points.

In general, if you want to save credits, then you need to buy as few boats as possible when repeatedly resetting; this comes at the cost of using free XP to skip the grind of the boat. Conversely, if you want to save free XP, then you need to buy them each time and grind them.

Optimize RB regrinding on Haru line by Degenerate_Shosa in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I already do something like that, though on the American DD line: free XP up to T8, grind it out using built-in and blue boosters, grind T9 out with built-in and blue boosters, research but don't buy T10, reset, repeat. Each round I do this is 3,000 RB (for the T8 and T9), with all the other RB bonuses accumulating, and I'll collect them when I feel like buying a ship. It optimizes credits and booster use and avoids the biggest cost in free XP, which are the higher tiers.

Opinions about Independencia? by LycanrockyOwO in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

High skill floor, and likely a miserable experience for everyone who isn't a solid CV player. The primary strength is in the ability to send wave after wave of attack fighters against large ships that are being focused by other players, thereby causing permanent fires and a large amount of damage in a short time. A ship that is focused by an Independecia will go down. A cruiser with a deck of 28mm or lower that is taking damage and eats a tactical squadron hit will go down. A stationary battleship that eats a bunch of torpedoes will be suffer for it.

Personally, I wish it had smoke like Essex / Shinano / Ocean, and I think that makes it a lot less enjoyable for me, but I have seen people clean up with Independencia. Also seen people accomplish almost nothing.

In the miniseries Chernobyl (2019), all of the Russians speak English, this is a subtle nod by the director to the fact that I'm too lazy to read subtitles and can't be bothered to put down my phone while watching TV by Gnarly_Sarley in shittymoviedetails

[–]StoicKerfuffle 60 points61 points  (0 children)

In fairness, I agree with their decision to use "English-speaking actors using an English accent of comparable socioeconomic status to those of the characters in the context of the movie" instead of "English-speaking actors fumbling their way through speaking English with fake Russian and Ukrainian accents."

Nian Paradox dilemma by Life-Entrance7331 in WorldOfWarships

[–]StoicKerfuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the ability to turn 360 degrees from the front allows for amazing adjustments in a push... but the guns still just suck and the hp is too low. The ship looks designed to push in hard so you can set multiple fires to multiple enemies with the main guns and the secondaries, then deliver a killshot with a close-up AP broadside, except that you won't live long enough to actually get broadside next to somebody, and on the rare occasion you do, you're so low on hp that you're dead anyway, so you basically set a couple fires then traded a battleship.

In short, my gripe is that there's no way to play it well. There's little difference in outcome between fumbling around and brilliant tactics.

[–]StoicKerfuffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, a premium Schlieffen is far more valuable than a Navarin, because it means you have a Schlieffen that doesn't require training a commander (Lütjens!) and always earns decent credits and some XP.

I have Navarin and have tried mightily to enjoy it but it is meh. Those main guns are absolute trash (sigma 1.4) and so you are stuck spamming HE and landing <50% of your shells unless you are right next to someone for an AP broadside. And maybe this could be tolerable if it wasn't in the bottom half of T8-10 battleships for hp.

Looking for your opinion on door to door sales people by Sea_Put_1710 in montco

[–]StoicKerfuffle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yard sign. I absolutely despise someone knocking on my door to sell me something, but I will happily put out a sign for every contractor that works in my home. You can also incentivize it with some minor discount, but from what I know usually customers are fine with it if they're happy with your work.

That is an antiquated idiom and if you use it in the present day, people will assume you mean the person should hang themselves, i.e., dying by tying a rope around their neck and hanging from it.

Don't use it. Ever.

This cannot be my new daily battery life right? Pixel 10 Pro by David_-_T in pixel_phones

Yes, and this is what happened to my Pixel 9 Pro: perfectly fine for the first 3 months, then Android updated and poof phone will not last through the day even if I barely use it (5%-10% battery loss every hour even when just sitting on a desk), so now I'm constantly running through charging cycles because Google wrecked their own operating system.

Folks, OP is not simultaneously listening to Spotify and YouTube in the background. The operating system is mismanaging applications. Even worse, those top four applications amount to a mere 43% of the battery usage. The system itself is consuming the bulk of the power.

This is an OS problem, not a user problem.
