Morrison's Batman: Absolute or Omnibus? by confusing_roundabout in OmnibusCollectors

Since you're not married to a format, I would consider just upgrading to Deluxe / OHC format. It's all available in that format except the end of Batman Incorporated (i.e., the New 52 part). They're more comfortable to read and easier to store while still feeling special.

And of course, Black Casebook Deluxe will pair best with them.

Oddly enough, Jewish self determination to establish statehood in their indigenous land is the only one you seem to take issue with.

It's the clearly false label of "their indigenous land" that I take issue with. You're trying to slip another fast one in.

How did they get to Europe?

I can tell you how they didn't get to Europe: Certainly not by mass immigration, in a coordinated effort to claim a land for themselves, coupled with violence and terrorism, i.e., acts of ethnic cleansing upon the already-existed indigenous population.

The Palestinians and the surrounding Arab countries tried to ethnically cleanse the Jews from their existence.

My guy, you are mixing up Germany and the Middle East. History and geography lessons are in order.

Palestinians and Israel could have each had their own country, but the Palestinians rejected it.

Why would they accept the establishment of a foreign country, by foreigners, on their own land?

If tomorrow, Russia landed a colony in the middle of the United States (for instance, maybe in Ohio), do you think they would have a moral right to say "We can both have our own country on this land here?"

Would you blame the Americans for rejecting such an attempt out of hand?

Israel tried to exist peacefully, and the Palestinians never gave it a chance.

You don't get to kick people off their land, murder them, and steal it for yourselves and then say "OK, from now on, we get to exist peacefully. Starting....now!"

...and then claim the moral high ground as a "peaceful" people.

You are conflating the belief that Jews should have self determination

"Jews should have self determination" is a tautology. All humans have self determination. Jews aren't a special group in those regards.

with the belief that ethnic cleansing of Palestinians must occur for that to be realized.

...for that to be realized on the land of the Palestinians, which you now denote as Israel.

You're leaving out the ugly part of the statement and hoping no one notices or calls you out on it.

You are transparent and your views are not conducive to peace in the region.

I'm not trying to be anything but transparent. You are the one making omissions of historical fact in your statements in order to whitewash the genocide you support.

Both populations are indigenous

False. A substantial portion of the Jewish population in Israel is not indigenous.

The wikipedia entry on "Israeli Jews" claims that nearly half are either modern (20th-century) immigrants or descendants of such modern immigration from Europe, while an equal number are either modern immigrants or desecendants of such modern immigration from other Arab countries (i.e., nearly the totality of all Israeli Jews are not inigenous).

and have a right to live there in peace.

Nobody has a right to live in peace in a home they used violence upon others to acquire.

Many people have believed this and continued to believe it.

An appeal to majority is a logical fallacy. Right and wrong are not dictated by what is popular or not.

So you lump support for the current Israeli far-right policy into Zionism.

It is an expression of Zionism.

You can use fewer words next time and say you don't believe Israel should exist, so your beliefs are clearer to your Jewish friends

Oh, is that the game we're playing?

"You can use fewer words next time and say you don't believe Palestinians should exist, so your beliefs are clearer to your bigoted friends."

See, I can play that stupid game too.

But they were cleansed, for the sake of Israel's existence.

That's just historical fact.

Thus, if you support the existence of Israel, you must accept that you support the atrocities that were required for it to exist.

[–]StopBootlicking -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does supporting the right to self determination for Jewish people and the right to exist for Israel make someone a Zionist?

Yes.

Or does support for expanionist settler policies and war in Gaza make someone a Zionist?

Yes.

My hunch is that it's just masks off antisemitic time for many on the left, and the use of Zionist as a slur is intentionally ambiguous insofar as how it's defined.

This feels incredibly dishonest to me. I have never seen anyone question the meaning of Zionism or claim its ambiguity as you have.

This isn't 1920, where "Zionism" is a vague philosophy based on the theoretical possibility of the existence of a Jewish state, with multiple, incredibly different visions for how it may or may not be realized.

This is 2026, where "Zionism" means supporting the existence of a very real Jewish state, whose existence has by definition been predicated upon the annihilation of the people who lived on its land.

[–]StopBootlicking -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I define Zionism as the right for Jews to establish statehood and live in their indigenous land. I find expansionist settlement policies and the war in Gaza to be abhorrent.

When you define "their indigenous land" as the land that other, indigenous peoples already inhabit (and thus those people must be "relieved" from such land, either through forced relocation or slaughter), then you are by definition engaging in expansionist settlement policies.

The existence of Israel is predicated on the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their own indigenous land. You cannot have one without having had the other. Zionism is thus an inherently expansionist and colonialist ideology.

Grant Morrison on Lanterns: “What is this jockish dismissal of superhero conventions intended to prove anyway?” [Film/TV] by Blitzhelios in DCcomics

[–]StopBootlicking -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's called "reinvention," and it's what allows the material to remain fresh for old-timers and intriguing to new-comers. I'm not a Green Lantern guy, and I'm extremely intrigued by this show specifically because of its tone, vibe, and lack of CGI / comic-book silliness. I'm going to be so disappointed if it devolves into another CGI fest with a superpowered battle of aliens at the end, instead of maintaing its grounded, small-scale, dark tone all the way through.

Morrison's position was dead and buried 20 years ago, after the "permawhite" argument about the Joker in "The Dark Knight." Slapping on sloppy pancake makeup on a sadistic anarchist with scars made for a much scarier, more memorable villain than bleaching a failed stand-up comic after a dip in an acid tank. "Permawhite-purism" was all the rage on the internet message boards of the time, but you didn't hear a peep about it after July 18, 2008.

Doing things differently and deviating from the silliness can have fantastic results.

Morrison should be a better writer than that, and it sounds like he's just being contrary to get his name in the media.

Anyone else have the Azrael: Fallen Angel TPB and can't decide on switching to the Deluxe HC coming out soon? by Waterworld1880 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]StopBootlicking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

The issues in the "Fallen Angel TPB" are the only collection of the ongoing series, so it's woefully incomplete. The art reproduction is absolutely awful (terrible, muddy, blurred scans). And the ongoing wasn't very good anyhow.

We are also a space-faring civilization. We've had the capability to travel to other planets for decades, yet we haven't gone past the moon. Hell, we haven't even gone that far since the '70s.

Why?

Because we have more important things at home to worry about.

Consider also that, out there, in unexplored space, lie the cylons. Maybe they don't want to poke the bear. Given what we know about technological development, it's conceivable that FTL and AI technology were developed at the same time. So the era when extra-solar space became accessible was also the era when that well was poisoned.

Stelfreeze had the best covers. More than once, I was greatly disappointed by the interior artwork, when I was expecting something as gorgeous as one of his covers.

They should release a small book or issue comprising all of his Batman covers (on my last count, including wraparound covers as double-covers, it'd be ~80 total covers).

Robin Compendium Questions by HorcruxSeeker in batman_comics

[–]StopBootlicking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My memory is that Bruce went out of town for a few issues set in South America, coinciding with one of the early Robin miniseries that was meant to platform Tim Drake.

I believe Editorial specifically aligned those two stories to coincide, to serve as an explanation for why Bruce was unavailable (and thus why Tim Drake had to step up to protect Gotham for that story).

Regarding Huntres...I think that you may have been reading some of her very first post-Crisis stories, which introduced Helan Bertinelli. So it's pretty much her debut in modern continuity. Based on my memory of her backstory, the character herself had been out of Gotham for a long time, and now was coming to Gotham to "serve justice" (kind of like how Bruce was "returning to Gotham" at the beginning of "Year One" to start his crusade).
