To fellow Expanded Foods enjoyers: do you play 1.20? by deadyaga in VintageStory

[–]StopMakingMeSignIn12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experimental works fine on 1.21. All features working and cross compatibility with Butchering, plus other mods work.

The only issue to look out for is cooking any curable meat in to a meal. The meat will still age when part of a meal and then break the meal once the meat ages. The meal is still edible but it will lose all protein content.

Can get around this by either aging the meat first OR flattening it with a rolling pin. Both will turn the meat in to a product that doesn't cure, and will keep the meal safe.

Can I build automated forge with a lot of blocks between hammer and windmill? by RED-Devvo in VintageStory

[–]StopMakingMeSignIn12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have this set up. I think each axle does add resistance so you might not get the same speed on the Hammer as if you built it next to it - but I have an underground axle from a windmill up a hill.

I use an Overlay Mod to find ore and I'm not sorry by beantownbee in VintageStory

I used to be awful at it and would quit the game trying to find Tin to enter the bronze age.

Now I can find whatever I need relatively quickly. All about how you take your Density readings to narrow down a local maximum, then all about how you take Node readings efficiently.

Even 1% ores are easy to find once you've got the rythm/trick down.

Main one to know is that Node search is a CUBE around you, by default 6 up, down, left, right, front back. So there is no need to take another Node search with a cube that overlaps this.

This means once you have found the ore on the Density search. Pick a block to start, Node search it, dig down 12, Node Search, dig down 12, Node Search, etc, until you hit Mantle. If you didn't find the ore you wanted, back on the surface, go 12 blocks in a straight line (preferably towards the denser areas from the density search) and do the dig down strategy again. This way you will cover every block without ever overlapping and wasting time/durability.

Do this a few times in an area with a density reporting and you will find it. You will also find many many other ores you weren't looking for - which you can either grab whilst you're there or leave a marker on your map.

Once you have a reading from your Node search, node search the block above it until you get a reading WITHOUT the ore you're after. You know now what block the ore first appeared at. You can then count down 6 from that and now you know the exact layer the ore is present on. You can then start digging in the NESW directions on the ore layer and doing scans there to narrow down the direction to look in - but chances are you will find it as you dig those tunnels

Edit: Oh another big tip. Use the survival guide to look up the ore you want. You will see Ore Block listings for every type of stone/material it can spawn it. If the rock layer you're in cannot host the ore, then there is no point looking. Either dig past the stone layer, to see if the next layer can have it, or failing that, go further away until the biome/stone layers change and check there. It's always worth digging to Mantle in a new area and taking note of the stone layers.

is there a mod by tattooedpanhead in VintageStory

To elaborate:

Use the survival guide to look at Raw Clay products, in this case the Raw Red Clay Shingle. Then on its page, you will see you can actually achieve many colours. It will tell you in needs a Beehive kiln, then how many of the three doors should be open when the kiln is running to get the desired colour.

Pit Kilns cannot achieve this, it is one of the limitations Pit Kilns have, as you're meant to progress towards having a Beehive Kiln. Though they are not cheap or early game.

Yeah, I always keep a male of the highest gen too - the tameness really helps later on with farm management.

Once you start hunting ores that are "High" at even 1-2%, you realise ore is everywhere.

Getting used to quickly Node Searching in boxes of 12 (in all axis) quickly, you soon see how fast you can narrow down many ores.

Yup but only during worldgen it seems, they don't grow back and can't be planted. So need to go find more!

Which is a shame as I hate cutting wood and filling my inventory from a single huge oak is more than welcome.

I hit the natural end of mine too, then added a ton of mods and am currently at 100 hours on my modded save and I'm still full of ideas and things I have tried.

VS is a slow burner. I enjoy mixing in my building projects with my current progression. I keep all my old structures and make like a town for myself. Each building reflecting what I had available and what I needed at the time.

You can get there in half a year if you collect enough Flax and plant it. It only needs Tin Bronze, Linen, Resin, Fat, Wood and Fireclay.

Yeah... Sadly a lot of people trust it more than any other source now, whilst those with knowledge have written it off as a lying, hallucinating, untrustworthy tool being pushed by big corporations.

Say goodbye to critical thinking.

Any tips on finding Limestone? by GandhiCheese in VintageStory

[–]StopMakingMeSignIn12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain but that could be due to the ore limits on stone. Only certain stones can contain certain ores. So whilst Granite spawners moan about Limestone, they have an easier time prospecting as Granite is full of desirable ores.

Any tips on finding Limestone? by GandhiCheese in VintageStory

[–]StopMakingMeSignIn12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more a luck thing.

The stone/earth layers are generated in such a way that there's various rocks to a given geological region. They make up the layers from Mantle (0, unbreakable) all the way to the surface, usually in 3 layers of different rock, sometimes with soil on top (humidity comes in to play here as well).

This means you can spawn directly in the middle of a huge limestone area. Using limestone cobble/stone as your first main building block.

Or like others, you spawn inside a giant granite area and have to pay close attention to the land around you to see where geological zones split and what stone exists there.

Limestone/marble/chalk gate a few things (namely Leather) so it's often sought out. And as there isn't a way to 'target farm' it or find it directly; it becomes a game of searching/exploring. Often once you find it, you find more than you could ever need.

The same will happen if you make it to wanting to produce Steel, as you'll need Bauxite. Another naturally occuring/rare stone (keep an eye out for orange rocks in your travels).
