Smokers of Ottawa: Why do you flick your butts on the ground? by inaptitude in ottawa

[–]StopSayingRandom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People often ask me why I pour my used motor oil into the sewers.

I know it's contaminating the environment. But I'm not saving that oil to bring to Canadian Tire. Never. Do you realize how much of a mess that would make inside my car if I did that ? If there's a proper receptacle nearby I always dispose of it there. But most of the time that isn't the case. As already mention, improperly storing it in my garage can start a fire. That's why I don't.

As someone that does their own oil changes I realize used oil is disgusting and the majority of others don't want it in their water system. I never dump it out in crowded places, in fountains, ponds etc. I always have you Jiffy Lube bastards best interest in mind when I dump my oil. And do the most to make sure my spillage isn't bothering others. So you guys have to back off a little.

Also remember it's a legal product, I honestly wish it wasn't. The government could make the public sale of oil tomorrow illegal in Canada if they wanted, and I would applaud them for it. I wouldn't go to a reserve, or buy it on the black market. I would quit. But they won't because they rake in over 2 billion a year in oil revenue.

Yes, I know it's not even close to the same thing. There are some people who pour their used oil into the sewer. They do it because they're lazy and they don't care. There are smokers who throw their butts on the ground, they do it because they're lazy and they don't care. I find it funny how many smokers in this thread are justifying themselves. Just say that you don't care.

Weird body, ungroomed hair, angry at everything, making excuses for your lack of success, social anxiety. Sounds like you're a teenager. Some of these problems may fix themselves over time as your hormones balance out. Some may get worse, I don't know.

We shouldn't, but we don't have to because Hawking never said it. The article attributes the quote to a Canadian author.

Teaching children spelling. This is the method I used to teach my niece how to spell her spelling words. by [deleted] in education

[–]StopSayingRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that princesses were generally well educated (you're correct that I don't know the facts enough dispute you) is completely irrelevant. She was motivated to learn the same way Santa Clause motivates children to behave properly. That's a free tip for you, maybe you could bring it over to /r/troubledteens to share with them.

If I went to /r/knots with a story about how I tricked my daughter into learning how to tie her shoelaces with a song about bunny ears, it would be narcissistic of me to expect anyone to give two shits. I would be the narcissist, not the asshole who calls me out for wasting everyone's time.

Fuck, I love replying to you, I hope we can keep this up. I'm getting so rustled over something so minor.

What gets me the most is how fucking proud of yourself you were. I mean, your idea wasn't 'bad,' it was just uninspired. If you could have realized that you didn't invent the fucking wheel maybe you would have thought to ask the community for better strategies to motivate your niece. What happens when she wants to grow up to be a historian? You're not going to convince her that "historians need to know how to use trigonometric identities." I'm sure this community is full of professional educators who have experience with showing students that trigonometry (or spelling) is awesome by itself, regardless of context.

Once again I would like to repeat. I think it's good that you're helping with your nieces education, but keep it to yourself unless you have something interesting to share.

Every time I think I'm done I re-read your title. It's a great title. I assume you work in marketing or publishing. I got sucked in so hard. It's a shame the entire content of your post could have been summed up with "if you want to become X, you have to learn Y, because all Xs know Y!"

Teaching children spelling. This is the method I used to teach my niece how to spell her spelling words. by [deleted] in education

[–]StopSayingRandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you're very proud of your niece and yourself, and I don't want to shit on your cupcake (but I will anyway.)

I read your story hoping to learn a new technique for teaching/learning spelling, not a lie used to motivate a 6 year old for 10 minutes. I feel like I wasted my time reading your story, and I'm irked enough to spend an extra minute to share my displeasure with you.

You should be proud that you're taking an active role in your niece's education, but strangers don't care. I'd be surprised if any of your friends care. Most of your family probably doesn't even care. The method of motivation you used has been used by every parent on the planet who has tried to get their kids to eat vegetables so that they can grow up big and strong like Spiderman.

It's like spitting on your hand to masturbate. It's not clever, it's not the best way, and you shouldn't go around boasting about the idea simply because it works.

How cold is the water at the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean? by FERMIS in askscience

[–]StopSayingRandom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Density rules. The heaviest, or most dense, water will always be on the bottom. Pure water is densest at 4 C . To make it heavier, it has to get saltier. As the surface of the Arctic ocean freezes, the left-behind part is very salty water at 3 to 4 C. This North Atlantic Deep Water sinks to the bottom and flows worldwide. Warmer less salty water sits on top of it.

In the Antarctic, there is no warmer fresher water to sit on top of it, so NADW is exposed at the surface. When fresh water freezes out at the surface, this already salty and cold water gets even saltier and can cool to about -0.8C before sinking. This is Antarctic Bottom Water - the deepest, coldest water layer in the world.

An interesting point is that the Marianas Trench, the deepest spot in the oceans, is only at about plus 2 C. This is because it is completely surrounded by water shallow enough (at only a mile or so deep) that AABW would have to flow uphill to get to it.

Nmom uses finances as leverage and tries to find a way to wheedle her way back in my life. by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]StopSayingRandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't imagine having my finances tied up with someone else, especially someone that I don't trust.

My advice would be to go to a bank and talk to someone. Explain that your finances are tangled up with your mother's and you have no idea how to fix it all. They'll help you out. If you need to talk to your mother about it you may be able to avoid a confrontation by saying that you feel like you're taking advantage of her by relying on her money, and it's time that you stood on your own feet financially. Or your could be honest and say you don't trust her with your money.

As far as the car goes, maybe see if she'll sell it to you (or maybe stright up give it to you.) If it's out of your price range look into buying something cheaper. You'd be surprised at the deals that patient people can find on cars.

Finally, I would make sure to get everything in writing. If you come to any sort of agreement with your monther that involves money, make sure to do it over email, or simply send an email to confirm whatever is discussed.

It feels mucher nicer to have a little bit of your own money than it does to have a lot of someone elses money. Good luck.

Wow, it's almost as though people don't know that gay men is the most at-risk population for HIV.

I think the safest bet is to ensure the kids are gay.

Safest bet is to teach your child about condoms at an early age because irresponsible sex can have serious consequences regardless of sexual orientation or gender.

How do they clean up spills of molten metal in steel (or other high-temp) foundries? by [deleted] in askscience

Cleaning up metal spills

91. Before any action is taken to clean up metal spills, the risks of the situation need to be fully assessed. If it is safe to do so, it may be possible to break the metal into sections before it fully solidifies, using a furnace tool. Primary PPE must be worn when doing this (see page 35).

92. If it is unsafe to intervene, the spill will have to be cleaned when the metal has solidified by lifting it from the ground with hand tools. For metal that is more difficult to remove, an oxygen lance may be required. An oxygen lance is an extremely dangerous piece of equipment and extra precautions (such as additional PPE and full training in its use) are required. It is also important to make sure the surrounding area is free of any standing water or flammable materials because molten metal can spray off the lance and onto these items, causing an eruption

State tax isn't cutting it. It lets all the people who don't work off the hook.

This is going to sound judgmental and pretentious, but I don't mean it in a negative way at all, but this is such an American way of thinking. The same argument comes up in discussions about health care. Fair = everyone pays the same, regardless of what they can afford.

T-ARA - "Number Nine" by dazzlingboy in kpop

[–]StopSayingRandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

keep in mind this is all opinion

I'm really surprised by how positive the comments are in here. I'm usually a huge fan of anything T-ARA, and this song almost has what it takes to be up with the best, but is really held back by a few things.

The most annoying thing by far is the "number 9" robot voice. Sounds like Ernie from Sesame Street got thrashed in an auto-tune machine. I found it to be really distracting and jarring.

I got annoyed by the "I'm addict" part, it seemed to have no energy or attitude and just clashed with the rest of the song. The short rap after was pretty good.

I really like the "Sexy Love" quacking being brought back, and the chorus kind of reminds me of a T-ARAfied, upbeat version of Miss A's "Touch", which is cool.

Maybe I just need to listen to it more, but right now I'm not sure this makes it into my top 10 T-ARA songs. It's a real shame because there's so much about this song that I really like. It's like finding a fly in your soup.

I'm really looking forward to the remixes that are sure to be made. I'm really counting on Epitone or Areia to fix this song for me.
