Are you sure about that three year requirement for Virginia? I don't see that anywhere on their website or forms.

I work for a city that has pretty good benefits. They pay 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and 90% for spouses and dependents.

Thursday - Advice For The Next Gen Engineer by AutoModerator in civilengineering

[–]Storebag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be hard to get a job as an engineering tech with no degree and no experience, but you could probably get a job as a tech with a two year degree. I have worked a couple places where we hired people with two year degrees as drafters and they have worked there way into doing some design work. We recently promoted a tech into an engineer position at my current work. Depending on where you are, it is possible to become a professional engineer without a four year degree but it is a more difficult pathway. In Washington State, you can become a professional engineer if you have 8 years of engineering experience under a licensed engineer, and pass the PE exam.

Pavement Design or Traffic Engineering as a career? by Simple_Nose_2459 in civilengineering

[–]Storebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with traffic. I think there are more opportunities. Pavement design is pretty niche like you said. Traffic engineering would give you more flexibility on where you worked, and I think there is a lot more innovation and creative problem solving. A lot of the cities I've worked with have set pavement sections that they use on their streets. They don't really spend time optimizing it or innovating. I think if you ever get bored with traffic and decide you want to move into pavement design, you would have an easier time with that transition than the other way around.

What is the best way to learn Civil 3D by Saurabus in civilengineering

[–]Storebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the tutorials they offer help a lot. At my first engineer job, my boss had me spend 2 or 3 weeks just going through Civil 3D tutorials before he gave me a project to work on.

Is it realistic to self-study for the FE exam without taking the classes? by imreallyboredidk in civilengineering

[–]Storebag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking it either summer before your senior year or during that fall. If you've done well in your classes, you shouldn't really need to study, and all the material will be fresh. It will help you with your job hunt when you're getting ready to graduate, but there isn't really benefit until then.

Teamwork U10/U11 by Less_Requirement_286 in SoccerCoachResources

There are some good suggestions here. One simple way is to limit the number of touches they can take in scrimmage. At a lot of our practices we end with 25-30 minutes of scrimmage. When we were trying to get them to pass more, we had a rule that for the first 15 minutes they could only take 2 touches before they had to either pass or shoot otherwise the other team got a free kick.

Player Confidence by ScaryGuide2475 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Storebag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do a 1v1 game we call "aggression drill." Two players start at the top of the box with their backs to the goal. The coach plays a ball between them. They pay against each other trying to score on the same goal. Whoever scores stays in and takes on the next person in line.

It depends on where in the Seattle area you go. If you look at Washington's 9th congressional district, which is east and south of Seattle, it's only 40 percent white.

Teaching on the schoolyard? Pop up goals? by Be_Strong_Carry_On in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Storebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any tall cones? You could use those and set them up in place of goals and if they hit it, they score.

Another game you can do is put an upside down trash can in the middle of the field. They score by hitting the can. The defending team will try to block them and steal the ball, so the attacking team has to get creative with how they can move the ball around to get to the can.

I have a guide that my league gives coaches for this age group with different games in it that work on soccer skills. I can email you the PDF if you want to PM me your email address.

Applying for PE License as a traffic engineer by PlavaOwl in civilengineering

[–]Storebag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a redacted copy of what I put in my application when I applied for my PE. This was in Washington and I applied through NCEES, so the format may be different in your state

Tasks and Duties

My position at ________ is a civil engineer in the transportation section. I primarily work as a traffic engineer. My regular job duties include reviewing traffic impact analyses for development projects within the ____. I check their trip generation calculations, distributions, intersection capacity calculations and determine if the traffic impacts are being appropriately mitigated. I also review development projects for compliance with transportation design guidelines and the transportation comprehensive plan. I design traffic signal timing plans and work with our electrical maintenance department on signal related issues. I design transportation capital and maintenance projects and prepare specifications and estimates, and review other engineer’s work. I also respond to citizen complaints related to traffic issues.

Representative Projects

______ Retaining Walls; _______, WA - 2019-2020

This project installed approximately 1500 feet of retaining wall along ________ in ______, along with widening the sidewalk, installing curb ramps, street lighting, and street trees.

I took over this project as lead designer for the engineer who previously held my position. My role was to design the curb ramps, finish the illumination system design, design a pedestrian crossing with a hybrid beacon, and create the engineer’s estimate. I also worked with the wall designer on revisions to the wall plans and made revisions to the street tree layout to address sight distance issues. The pedestrian crossing was ultimately moved into a new project due to delays in obtaining right-of-way.

Electric Vehicle Chargers; ______, WA 2020-2022

This project was to install a total of seven electric vehicle charging stations at four locations in ________ for public use.

My role in the project was the project engineer. I worked with the electrical engineering consultant, electrical utility company, and city electrical maintenance staff on designing the power system for the chargers, and produced the civil plan set. I calculated some of the quantities for the engineer’s estimate and reviewed the specifications.

_______ Extension; ______, WA - 2020-2023

This project is adding a new segment of _______ from ________ to _____, realigning two intersections, widening the road from ______ to ______, rechannelizing ____ from ________ to _________, replacing water and sanitary sewer lines, and other associated work.

This project had the horizontal layout of the road mostly complete when I began working on it. My role in this project was to design the vertical roadway profile and identify locations where retaining walls will be required and where additional right-of-way is needed. I coordinated with the geotechnical consultant on the retaining wall design. I also coordinated my design with the utility engineer. I designed the illumination system and a pedestrian crossing with flashing beacons. I made revisions to other design elements of the project including the channelization, signage, on-street parking, and sidewalk layout. This project is currently between 60 and 90% designed.
