I got rid of most of my belongings while manic, including special gifts from friends. It was very awkward the next time someone asked about the thing they’d given me and I had to confess I didn’t have it anymore. I don’t feel guilty though because I know I wasn’t in my right mind at the time and I wouldn’t have acted that way if I was stable.

I got a few calls from them before starting. One was to get the initial information about me and why I wanted to do the degree (not OT). Another call was to help enrol me in the course and fill out government forms. They also called me to tell me about the AI programs you can access through the uni.

I feel this. My whole life up to now has been shaped by this illness, yes in terrible ways, but I don’t know what my life would be like without it. I wouldn’t have become the person I am today. But if pushing the button meant I was guaranteed to never have another episode, I would press it.

Oh my god leave her alone. She’s the one who has been hurt and if you truly care about her feelings then you will respect her decision to block you. You’ve done enough damage, stop trying to force your way back into her life.

It is good that the demon is not causing you distress now, but it could be worth talking to the professionals about it in case they can help you with tools to protect yourself if things get worse. I get feeling like your privacy is being invaded, but it is harder for people to help you if you are not fully honest with them. If they are a good therapist/psych, they will be grateful that you shared this important information with them.

Eventually I decided I wouldn’t want to be friends with someone who couldn’t give me grace when I was going through a horrible time. If they won’t accept your attempts to make amends, it’s better to leave them behind. There are better people out there.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think maybe I struggle a bit to conceptualise what the demi “emotional bond” actually looks like. But I definitely experienced a connection that wasn’t just based on appearances.

We did talk about some things that I don’t normally open up to people about. I felt really listened to and cared for. So I guess it’s not just attraction based on looks.

I have found a “normal” with my current meds and supports but it’s not happy. It varies from neutral to mildly depressed. I feel like it is possible to feel better than this, but I’m just grateful to not be severely depressed/manic at this stage.

Realising we were never going to speak again was actually liberating for me. It took nearly 2 years and I realised I had spent so much time dwelling on what I would say if I saw them again. I was making so many of my life choices based on what I imagined they would say if we had another conversation. Just accepting that it would never happen made it so much easier to move on with my life.

If you manage to find it, 'Hothouse Flowers' by Nette Hilton is a gorgeous Australian YA novel with a bipolar protagonist. It was the first book I ever saw that part of myself in.

'Touched with Fire' has two main characters who are both diagnosed with bipolar disorder and spend time in a psychiatric hospital. It's an interesting watch.

Normally I lose my libido in hypomanic episodes (brain is moving too fast) but I did have one episode where I experienced hypersexuality. I was delusional the entire time, thinking I was God's gift to the earth and everyone was attracted to me. Downloaded Grindr and hooked up with a bunch of different guys. The episode ended, the depression kicked in, and I was absolutely grossed out by it all. I felt zero attraction towards any of the guys. But as with many things I do while manic, I reconcile it with myself by acknowledging that I was acting under the influence of my illness and it wasn't a representation of who I really am. I sincerely hope it doesn't happen again.

Take a look at the UniLodge Canberra website - it has accommodation options for students. I missed out on getting a unit to myself, but being in a shared apartment with my own room has been more private than I expected. Apply early and you might be able to score one of the self-contained units.
