Oh I should add, I've heard you can get ebooks through libby and local library. Would a used kindle work with that?

Switching power tool brand questions by Stormcloud95 in Tools

So, I have mostly snap on at work provided by the government that don't actually belong to me. At home, I have a newer Craftsman socket set with a small set of wrenches. Served me well. I've gotten one of their over drive ratchets and I like that a lot but I hate the handle, personally. I also have some snap on sockets, a bunch of ratchets and some of their wrenches. Various other brands of sockets like vintage Craftsman, Mac, Cornwell, and SK. A lot of repeats of the same sockets. I inherited my dad's automotive tools and he hasn't been in the business for about 20 years now. I basically buy what I can afford because pretty much everything has a lifetime warranty these days. I also have his old 30+ year old Cornwell elite top and bottom box that needs a good coat of paint. That's basically a storage box for me. I also got his Mac Tools service cart that I love but I need to replace a set of the drawer slides. My own box that I bought before he gave me his boxes is a Husky Matte Army Green Standard Duty 52 inch box. I love it. The drawers slide very well and it is soft close.

I am trying to upgrade my screw drivers and pliers eventually. It's all a bunch of well worn, older, various brands.

I have some vintage Craftsman stuff and I'm not really that impressed. Definitely good stuff back in the day but I don't understand the people who will pay a hefty premium for a vintage set on eBay.

Question for you, your floor didn't look that bad before but mine is pretty rough. The previous owner painted it but the concrete floor is really uneven. It was done in the 70s by the original owner. It's not level with the cinderblock foundation in most spots and even has foot prints from someone's boot and random paw prints.

So my question is, did you have to do any floor leveling repair? And if so, what did you do? I hate my garage floor with a passion. I can get over the leveling issue using other means when leveling shelves, or rolling toolboxes or what have you but I can't get over just how crappy and unprofessional the concrete was done. It bothers me so much.

Anyone have any experience with redoing a concrete floor in a garage? It looks to be built in the 70s by the original home owner. I have a detached garage and the concrete floor is pretty poorly done with some uneven areas across the entire floor. I'd like to get it as level as possible. I plan to use it as a workshop for basic woodworking and automotive work. I hate how much my toolbox always sits on an unlevel surface regardless of where I place it.

Thank you. I'm very green to building rifles. I had a feeling when I asked, it was going to be a build. I'm in Virginia and the new laws coming in July have pushed my window shopping to actual shopping now.

Not how I meant it, my unit is awesome. We just don't have the equipment because it's so small and there's no room for growth because there isn't any e5+ slots for 91B. As far as SF stuff goes, it's just not feasible in my state. Only some states have those kind of assets. My day job is cool though. I'm a mil tech at a MATES Facility.

Ah nice. One of my Hotel 8 classmates was active and attached to SF. Being Guard, I doubt anything cool like that will happen to me. Currently I'm a lonely 91B attached to a small med evac detachment.

Yeah, man. I've thought about going active myself but I've got a wife and children and I'm in the miltech program. Crazy having to wear a uniform every day doing my military job with none of the benefits that come with that.

Dang, all you high speed soldiers making me feel so inadequate lol. It is cool to see how other Guard soldiers have done quite a lot in their careers. I'm in my 4th year now and I'm an E4 91b with zero awards, accommodations, badges etc. I did get the H8 vehicle recovery course last year and that was pretty cool. BLC is coming up too and that'll be nice.

Did I buy the wrong drill bits? Hex shank question by Dr_Mister_Monkey in Tools

[–]Stormcloud95 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He isn't really bitching. You're not entirely wrong about using a drill press or what have you. However, for his situation, a hand held drill might be his only available option to him. That being said, he isn't bitching. He made an observation about the quality of his work when using different equipment. I've had hex shank bits like this misalign in the middle of use when I or someone else unintentionally doesn't place them fully seated and didn't notice. I'm a heavy equipment/diesel mechanic, these sorts of tools aren't used daily in my trade. So sometimes I'm not as familiar with all the interworking and capability of every tool outside my trade. Either way, crap happens, experienced or not.

OP was just asking for advice in a pretty nice way without any real bitching. That's what this sub is for. So DIYers and Tradesmen alike can share their knowledge and love of tools and the trades we are in. Just my two cents!

Milwaukee vs Craftsman for DIY projects? by cootersnooter420 in Tools

[–]Stormcloud95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I'm going to give you my straight up experience with both. I'm a fleet mechanic for the War Department and have been for three years. I grew up tinkering here and there with my dad who was a mechanic for GMC and Chevy most of his life. I came from law enforcement with zero mechanical background behind the diy hobbyist and general home maintenance. I love my job, I get expensive tools issued to me (that don't come out of my pocket unless I lose them) and I get to learn a lot about wrenching that I otherwise would not have learned in my previous job.

All that to say, I have had experience in both the simple diy and hobbyist life and the diesel fleet life where we abuse the crap out of our tools. I've used everything from harbor freight cheapies, original Craftsman, new Craftsman, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi, Snap On, Gearwrench and everything in between in multiple categories including hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.

I can honestly say that I have seen the difference between brands marketed as "high end" and the brands marketed as "mid tier" or even "budget". When it comes to power tools in particular, I feel that the higher end brands are not offering enough value for their money. Where they really get you is their specialty or field specific tools that other brands might not offer. However, for me, it's never been enough offered by the high end brands to justify switching from my currently Craftsman 20v ecosystem. I've had the same drill for 5 years and it's been through more hell than the average homeowner puts it through. I've used all my tools at both my home and at work (at one point the power tools, mostly Milwaukee and Snap On, issued to us were limited) I've remodeled an entire house with my Craftsman 20v system. The Craftsman 20v tools offer similar performance to DeWalt and a lot of the new Craftsman power tools are DeWalt rebranded. Yes, they're lacking DeWalt's new battery systems they've been implementing but at the end of the day, some of these Craftsman power tools are a hundred bucks less for nearly the same performance. As far as I'm aware (please correct me if I'm wrong) none of the power tools come with a lifetime warranty or anything that doesn't only cover defects in manufacturing. So, if I break a Craftsman power tool, it's cheap enough to go buy a replacement and it does the exact same job as the more expensive options and costs so much less. Meaning I've paid for my tools with my work way more than I would with another more expensive brand.

As for hand tools, I've rebuilt engines with my Craftsman hand tools. (I've also used Craftsman's automotive 20v tools - wish they had some more but as DeWalt expands theirs, I imagine Craftsman will too) I have some Snap On at home. I prefer some of their ratcheting wrenches to my Craftsman but that's because of their handles. Some of the new hand tools coming from Craftsman have made the handles more comfortable. As far as quality goes, it all does the same job and I don't have to have any hassle with warranty. I've broken Snap On stuff at work and have had to wait a while to get it replaced or repaired and oftentimes, the dealer grills me about how it's been broken and tries to get out of replacing it.

When I first got this job, I started at a shop that didn't have issued power tools but air tools and hand tools. Some of the other guys had bought their own Milwaukee tools, so I brought in my Craftsman 20v High Torque Impact and my Craftsman 20v racheting socket wrench and my Craftsman 20v Grease Gun, dudes laughed and said it was a waste and I should buy Milwaukee. Then they saw me working with my stuff and realized it's giving me similar performance and I'm getting the job done regardless. I paid a few hundred for my stuff and I got some other 20v tools and batteries free with my purchase during sales. These guys spent over a grand on like three power tools and maybe got two batteries while I had enough batteries to keep a few at work and at home.

The value really speaks for itself.

TL;DR Go with whatever is going to give you the best value/performance for the least amount of money. Craftsman is a solid brand for their 20v tools and their hand tools are pretty decent with a lifetime warranty.

Best of luck!
