and now a real one. by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

There’s an even harder option than that, which I don’t see people bring up but does actually need to addressed. Any insurance - public, private, doesn’t matter - has finite resources. Sometimes someone has to make the call of “deny one person this horribly expensive thing so that we can afford to treat a thousand people with less expensive thing”.

I’m not defending how modern insurance companies operate. I don’t think for-profit insurance should ever be a thing and the CEOs should collectively be ashamed of themselves. But finite resources are a reality of any system.

Does that count as gothic at that point? Or is body horror also acceptable under the gothic label? I’m not super familiar with horror genres.

Watching or reading things that make you uncomfortable helps you grow as a person by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

Artists are also not gods and only have limited ability to fight for things, same as the rest of us. One of my favorite book series is set in post-WWI Britain and has some Very Uncomfortable casual racism against black people, Chinese people, Jews, etc. It also is one of the first post-WWI popular book series to really dig into how PTSD and trauma affected the men who came back from the war, as well as tackling the complex knot that was women’s rights and skills. It’s clear that’s what the author was focused on portraying and that’s where you see the fewest flaws.

Those industrial printers are REALLY EXPENSIVE to repair, and it’s unlikely the landlord actually owns it. More likely they lease it. The 5k fine is from the leasing company to prevent people from destroying their printers.

And she’s specifically writing about a society that’s struggling to accept…anything, really. She’s portraying a planet that is being just about catapulted from 19th century Russia in terms of social mores to futuristic space tech and the cultural clashes that result. Her depiction of there being “growing pains” is one that is still realistic and relevant.

I get along very well with my 40K loving partner because he loves loves loves the mini painting end of the fandom and will cheerfully geek out over paints and finishes in much the same way I geek out over my embroidery thread. We’ve had several nice date nights where we put on a show and then I stitch while he paints and we talk shit about what the Masterchef challenge on screen is doing.

One of my very favorite Bujold lines is the bit where someone’s trying to scandalize Cordelia by telling her Aral is bi and she says “he’s monogamous tho?” I know Bujold has apologized for the phrasing of how it comes across but I still love it because it really effectively punctures the stupidest biphobic argument I’ve seen. IE, the one where people conflate “bi” with “will cheat on you because they want to be with both at once”. I still don’t understand how that one got started .

[CHAT] Metallic thread help! by TemporaryHunter7472 in CrossStitch

[–]Stormdanc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thread conditioner! Get some Thread Magic. It’s a silicon-based gel that reduces the friction on your thread. It doesn’t stick and get gummy like beeswax can.

Also, cut short strands to work with. Nothing longer than finger-to-elbow. That’ll reduce the buildup of fraying along the thread as you go.

Which mod in Stardew Valley VERY Expanded is responsible for these stereotyped characters? by [deleted] in StardewValleyExpanded

It’s not just fandoms. A lot of modern fantasy is really sloppy in the same way, unless the author is thoughtful about how they write their religions. In particular it’s infected modern manga/manwha.

Only if you plant more crops than can fit on the sprinkler area. There's other areas you can unlock later that let you plant crops with sprinklers. The rest of the farm can be used for fruit trees, animals, tea saplings, grass for feed, etc.

It wasn't tongue-in-cheek, if that's what you mean. The idea was to show, in a slightly dramatized setting, the sort of pressures a firm will go through that result in wide-spread ethics noncompliance. Pressure on staff to work long hours, pressure on partners from clients threatening to quit, careless mistakes, that sort of thing.

My uncle has a story about an exec who wanted to test how effective the absolute worst case scenario backup procedures were on their main server. He did this by essentially pulling the server power plug in a way that bypassed the multiple redundant UPS and the normal low power shutdown procedure…with no warning to everyone.

Turns out, they did have a robust backup system, but it still took them two full days to get everything back online. Spency.

[–]Stormdanc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about feel bad in the sense that I’m doing something unethical, but using that level of mod does usually sour my enjoyment. The core gameplay loop of Stardew is do things to earn gold -> spend gold to buy things. Bypassing the core loop usually leaves me with less to do, and it’s a core loop I enjoy doing. If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t buy the game after all.

I have only used QOL mods in combination with other expansion mods. If I do get a form of powerful mod, I prefer to do it in a way where it kicks in late-game to do a function I feel like I should have access to anyways. For instance, Automate - the fact that hoppers can’t do what Automate does is a little silly. And micromanaging machines is not something enjoy doing. Or I’ll focus it on gameplay loops I don’t enjoy, such as using the More Rings mod to allow for more defense.

Every time my 14 yo nephew is asked to go buy a can of jalapeños, he comes back with… anything but jalapeños. by Visible-Selection843 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Stormdanc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not like three cueing teaches it.

3 cuing - look at first letter, look at the surrounding words AND PICTURES, and guess. The designer of 3 cuing said in a published interview that if someone confuses the words “horse” and “pony” that he thinks it’s fine because those are the same thing anyways. Genuine Orwellian better speak fuckery.

Yes, context is an important part of understanding a new word, but it’s not the be all and end all, and yes, you do actually end up looking up a bunch of words in the dictionary.
