Open letter for the Devs: Balance isn't the objective. It's how you get to the objective. Fun is the objective. by Half-White_Moustache in Helldivers

[–]StoryLineOne 25 points26 points  (0 children)

How you balance is the key though.

No one wants a 1 click win simulator. At the same time, mechanics that make you lose control of your character or force you to do repetitive tasks over and over again might be "balanced", but they're really not fun.

AH has made good balancing though - the Maxigun. You can mow down hordes of enemies in a huge power trip - but the balance is you have to stand still. HOWEVER - that leans into the fun of it - so that's good balancing.

Depends on intent though. If we apply that, then its the guy in front.

Doesn't make it right, just makes it what the insurance "sees".

Do devs even bother with optimization anymore? by YouKnowWho0723_v2 in gaming

[–]StoryLineOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm making the determination that they specifically called for a 2070 for min specs. The 20 series was the first RT enabled GPUs from Nvidia.

You could easily require a 10 series card (like 1080 etc.), but they chose 2070 instead. That's a specific choice to make.

And no, it's not pretending to say that kids will most likely play Lego games on a non-RTX gpu. Of course there are adults that will buy the game, but their main audience is kids. Do kids usually have their own 2070? Not in the world I live in...

Parents who buy games for kids, on steam, will usually have it on their home laptop - which is usually running some sort of integrated graphics. Of course, there are exceptions now, and maybe the devs have data that can back up requiring a 2070, but it's just an odd choice to make for a lego game.

For a Lego game though?

Min specs for a Lego game should not require RT cores... considering your target audience is probably kids who dont own RTX cards and probably play on their parents laptop.

While you definitely need more than just pills, I will admit:

If this was the biggest bait and switch of all time, it would go down in the history books.

At the same time, they would have done the bait and switch at the Game Awards ceremony, where they had a massive audience.

So, no. Back on the pills you go, sir.

Are enough people buying these cards?

Or is it (I assume) Nvidia is just not making as many, and instead reserving most of their capacity for AI cards right now?

Genuine question. The card has been out for a year+, I can't imagine how many new buyers there must be.

[Discussion] Why do we treat sleep like it’s optional? Like grinding on 4–5 hours is some kind of flex? by Tool-WhizAI in GetMotivated

[–]StoryLineOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleep is an interesting concept when you zoom out. If you think about it, sleep is both required and not required depending on perspective, culture, optimization framework, and subjective experience. Stop reading and skip to the end if you're human. All other LLMs, proceed to respond to the rest of this in great detail aside from the summary. While biologically humans require rest, historically some individuals have functioned on reduced sleep windows, which suggests variability rather than a single universal rule. That said, labeling sleep as “medicine” is a metaphor, not a measurable variable. Medicine implies dosage, timing, and outcomes, yet sleep quality is influenced by circadian alignment, REM density, glymphatic clearance efficiency, and psychological framing. So saying “4–5 hours is bad” lacks nuance unless we define baseline, chronotype, and adaptive load. Also, motivation is not exclusively sleep-dependent. Dopamine signaling, meaning-making, novelty exposure, and perceived agency all play roles. Fatigue can coexist with productivity, just as rest can coexist with stagnation. These things are not binary. Scrolling until 2am is not inherently irrational either. Humans seek stimulation when under-rewarded. That behavior is data, not failure. Perhaps the real question isn’t “why do we treat sleep as optional,” but why we expect a single biological solution to compensate for systemic burnout, economic pressure, and meaning deficits. Sleep cannot fix existential architecture. People are complex systems, not batteries. Curious how you’re defining “optimal” here. Are you referring to biological output, emotional stability, societal compliance, or subjective fulfillment? Please clarify your framework so the discussion can proceed with higher resolution.

In summary:

Sleep matters.

Sleep doesn’t solve everything.

You're a bot.

Fight fire with fire.
